I have two favorites:

1. Born to Run by Springsteen.

2. The entire genre called “Outrun”. Best exemplified, but by no means limited to, the album called “Outrun” by Kavinsky.

No YouTube links here. You probably know where to find Born to Run and the Outrun genre is large.

"Highway Patrol" by Junior Brown.

On one trip, when I still picked up hitchhikers, the Doors,
"Killer On The Road" kept coming on the radio. Made both of us sort of
nervous, eh?

"Low Rider," by War, used to be fun while on trips, as well.

Probably 50 or 100 driving songs have ridden along over
the years. (I'm sure I've forgotten quite a few.) Kept me awake on long straight
stretches, gave me something to think of besides the amount of road ahead of me still.

I like the Elvis version of that tune...the original Chuck Berry version is great, too.

This one has been in the playlist since 1985:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jS_Xfzx_Wpo

I like the original version, too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsTfCITzISM

and some from the original piss-and-grease English guys

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pFUEsv4Eo0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeglgSWKSIY

plus some mid-period Jethro Tull:

Bill Kirchen & Too Much Fun playing Hot Rod Lincoln

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxjvlB26Rgw

(Bill was the guy playing guitar on the Commander Cody hit version from 1972 -even my Jazzbeaux dad liked that one)

Bill also does a transcendent version of Dylan's "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues"

(one of my favorite guitar solos, ever)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Q9zSwCaV8U

(edit- just linked by Glenn Reynolds at Instapundit.com... Kirchen is a national treasure. Just about any electric guitarist worth his salt can get it done on a Fender Telecaster, first made in 1950. Even the serious jazz guys owned one.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJoa47R1yqc

and mid-period King Crimson also works...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09uQQqPDx2w

Plus about the entire catalog of The Stray Cats, Chris Isaak, Neko Case, and The Clash.

what kind of driving do you do?

Eastbound and down is the favorite song of a friend of mine who is a retired Lt. Col from 7th Special Forces. He served in Berlin in the late 80’s in the mission that was declassified in 2014. Good stuff. His issue gun For the op was an HK P7.

Lots of categories of driving songs. Let's assume, for brevity, that all of them are top down, warm, starry night.

By yourself:

The Cult - 'She Sells Sanctuary'
The Cure - 'A Forest' and all of Disintegration
Pink Floyd - 'Echoes'
Mozart - 'Der Hölle Rache' (i.e., The Queen of the Night aria; perhaps Diana Damrau, but insert your favorite here)

If you're with friends, U2 - Achtung Baby (this data is 20 years old, but I bet it holds up); if you're with your special friend, perhaps 'The Girl From Ipanema' and assorted Sinatra;

and hundreds more.

Coming home on leave back in day, I couldn't tell you how many times I heard this song. Seemed appropriate.

I'll answer something that was not asked but is perhaps also helpful.

Besides listening music, I like to hear podcasts and audiobooks on my daily commutes. I plug a bluetooth receiver like this one (https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Soundsync-Bluetooth-Connection-Headphones/dp/B07H5C2BQX) into my car's radio and couple it with my mobile phone. There are very good and very bad podcasts and audiobooks, you have to search. I like the kind which spread positive, useful information for body and soul. About healthy nutrition, positive thinking, buddhism, interesting science, stuff like that. Since I live in Germany, most are in German and it would probably not help you to refer them. But I'm sure that English counterparts exist. In English, I like the podcast of ballistic radio. As app, I use Google Podcasts (I'm not proud of it but it works).

Music:
Tom Petty (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL66AjDHy_ERqCJtj5cTi-qqdcmhht6mrA)
ELO (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL66AjDHy_ERrImCf8zU239O530_h3caGb)
Mark Knopfler (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL66AjDHy_ERoSmwA_SzbzVF5KnvVGQAB8)
Linkin Park (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL66AjDHy_ERpCt2SMVBjcUPbW7I1LBerH)

PS:
Bruce Springsteen, of course. I've heard here in Germany that his music is the most popular driving music in the USA. Is that true?

I tend to think in driving albums more than songs. First up on the list:

The Heavy Metal Sound Track

https://youtu.be/viDDL2Jzw20

Worn out at least one cassette, lost another, and melted one CD left on a dash in a desert summer. Before cloud replaced physical media, I was a key player in ongoing sales apparently :-)

Thank you for that. I never knew who he was and he's fantastic.

ETA: Oh, and Pantera plus a bunch of other stuff but always back to Pantera.

Thanks for making me think of that one

Blue Collar Man rocks! But when you're heading home at 2 a.m., rowing the gears, keeping it howling at redline dancing the Drgaon's Back away from PCH up Decker Canyon to Mulholland and back to Topanga, Renegade is the penultimate Styx tune.

When you run the Dragon's Back out to PCH, to Leo Carrillo Beach, The Song is 11:59 and when Debra Harry's sultry voice calls, you will take her like a rocket to the ocean.

But you don't just listen to Renegade. Or 11:59. You put on the entire album and ride the flow.

That song more reminds me of two girls named Laurie and Annie driving slow, smoking a joint, oblivious to the masked serial killer following / stalking them. :)

Surprised that no one has mentioned "Gimme Some Lovin'" by the Spencer Davis Group. It featured Steve Winwood at 16 years old. I always have to watch my speed when this comes on.

On any of my ideal road trip mixes, you'll find 80's/90's metal like Metallica & Pantera, blues like Stevie Ray Vaughn, and 00's era EDM like Prodigy and Paul Oakenfold, and some newer 'chillstep' EDM like Blackmill and Seven Lions I've come to enjoy quite a bit.
My wife loves newer metal that I've found quite agreeable, like Parkway Drive, A Day To Remember, As I Lay Dying, etc, and some newer breakbeat bass-heavy genres of EDM from artists too numerous to mention, but searching youtube or spotify for Seven Lions or Blackmill will get you there.

Prodigy's 'Fat of The Land' album or The Crystal Method's 'Vegas' CD may as well be guaranteed speeding tickets if I'm listening to them while driving a fast car late at night.
