Residents of Yekaterinburg were flabbergasted to see a couple of elephants wandering the snowy streets of Russia’s third-largest city after they escaped from a circus.

Do elephants get cold? I bet they're cold.

Yes, they definitely get cold.

That's probably why somewhere down the line of elephants there was a single mutation (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26146078) that resulted in long hair and increased cold-temperature preference (but likely less thermal tolerance) in Woolly Mammoths.

Do they get trunk shrinkage in the cold?

Not as much as you and...

Also, maybe it's my inner tree hugger, but I always get sad when I see elephants associated with circuses or shows. They are such majestic and beautiful creatures and I'm really not into them being used for entertainment. But for that matter, I'm not really into the same for horses or dogs, other animals, or even humans (when it's against their will, if you're consenting it's fine).

I don't mind seeing the animals at the zoo, but that's because I've worked with zoos and recognize how dedicated they are to improving the quality of life and fate of animals.

But I just can't reconcile the sadness in the body language and eyes of elephants with anything besides a desire to see them left alone.

I think we really need to address the elephants in the room that are blues' bad puns and jokes.

Everyone has a job to do...otherwise we're gonna find ourselves getting into more hairy situations like a certain Tarantula.

Comic relief. It's a thing.

(And you can't use me as a foil for your own bad puns. I won't have it. I won't I say!)

Foil?

I was going to use you as my mast(adon) for hoisting up your petard.

What I do with my petard is my own bidness.

The ones they used to have at SF Zoo always had lung infections and suffered greatly from the constant 60 degree temps and ocean air. They won't get any more of them because they suffered so many health problems.

That's my hometown. If I could escape that circus and make all the way here, two elephants getting out and across the street is nothing.

Check out snow on the ground. That's how it is pretty much on the streets and roads for about 4-5 months. As the article says, third largest Russian city.

So you guys turn this thread into a pun fest, but not one mention of "is your EDC ready for rogue elephants?" I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed.

Timothy Olyphant says you would be justified to use ivory tipped ammunition while hunting rogue elephants in Tuscaloosa.

Like Groucho, he once dreamed that he was defending himself against such rogue elephants in his pajamas. How they got in his pajamas he hadn't a clue.

No pun, but we went to the Portland zoo years ago. The male elephant got a giant (HUUUUUGGGGEEE) erection. Little kids were asking what's that? Why does he have an extra leg? Adult hilarity ensued.

My friend who is a comparative psychologist and did zoo work, says you have to watch them and they hold grudges. One keeper known to be nasty was walking by the cage. An elephant reached out and grabbed his arm and pulled it inside and bent around the bars. Holding the arm in place, the elephant head butted the arm into actual goo. Awful thing to see.
