Not a knife guy. I own a few Spydercos, a little Böker, and my EDC which is a CRKT Ignitor-T I’ve carried for probably 10yrs now.

I read the Field Knife thread, but am looking for something a bit more classic (or classic styled) that would both be utilitarian, and also blend well with a six gun and lever rifle. I have ZERO ideas where to start looking. Like stated, unlike firearms, knives for me have always been typically whatever I stumble onto at the hardware store. Use is for general camp style and field tasks.

Let the suggestions fly!

Thank you.

Something Lima a Buck 119? Case also makes traditionally styled fixed blades with leather handles and sheaths.

This Dozier Personal is about as old-school as I'm willing to go. Price shipped should be sub-$250, and it's a LOT of knife for the money.

Shown for scale.

Wow. That was quick. Thanks.

Yeah...that Dozer is what the exceedingly small file in my brain is thinking.

Old school--how about a Condor Hudson Bay (https://www.amazon.com/Condor-Hudson-Walnut-Handle-Sheath/dp/B003D9RBPW/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=condor+hudson+bay&qid=1579726691&s=sporting-goods&sr=1-1) modeled after a mountain man knife? Never owned a Condor and I've read that QC is spotty but this one seems to get good reviews. A smaller version is also available.

There are a lot of adaptations to the knives that you can order. Ordering is a bit of a hassle. There are essentially buyers that buy up most of the production and you have to hunt one of them down, pay catalog price and wait a few months, order from Randall pay catalog price and wait like 4 years, or overpay from somewhere.

You might like to check out the Scandinavian knives on Ragweed Forge (https://www.ragweedforge.com/) for some ideas. I love Scandis...whether custom or production. Great practical knives available in carbon or stainless steels.

Here's some old school. This is a Kabar my dad gave me when I was a Boy Scout in the '60's. Much later as a 1LT it was the only tool available when I used it to dig out a Jeep that got high centered when my boss got it stuck; and blamed me for not spotting the high centering hazard in the 4' grass. :D

I've gotten great service out of it. There are more traditional versions yet with the leather washers for the grip.

I would imagine starting from what the knife will be for would result in more useful suggestions? Do you have an intended use in mind, any size preference, budget restraints (this is P-F, the latter is important here... :p ), anything else that comes to mind?

Bark River was my very first thought.

They fit almost any budget. Be sure to budget a sheath though, only some models come with them. DLT and Knives Ship Free have a plethora of options in leather that should fit the bill nicely. Absolutely one of my favorite blade amongst those I own is my Bark River Trakker with a Scout-Style sheath. It's a little big for day-hiking carry, but for back country, it will do everything a hatchet or bigger blade will do and everything a smaller blade will do. It's one of the few "do everything" blades. Plus, it looks fuckin' awesome.

That said, you may also consider a good old fashioned hatchet - Like this Hults Bruk - https://www.dlttrading.com/hults-bruk-tarnaby-hatchet - At 1.25 pounds, it may seem a little heavy, but a hatchet with a flat butt can be used as a hammer for tent stakes, etc. And a sharp hatchet can do pretty much anything a knife can do...except, maybe, skin game. Which you can do, but it's not ideal for the task. That said a sharp hatchet + a good folding pocket knife will do all your camp chores. It may make some cringe, but you can do with a hatchet much easier than a knife...And you have less edge to touch up afterwards when you do it.

Carothers Performance Knives EDC. http://www.carothersknives.com/knives/3-edc2/
This isn't my photo, I, uh, liberated it, but I have two and they're great little knives. The ESEE-4, Swamp Rat HRLM, and several of RMJ Tactical's smaller knives are also great picks. My most carried fixed blade is an RMJ Utsidihi, just on account of how flat it carries, but I heard they're discontinuing it this year.

AG Russell stocks some Dozier Knives. They also have a nice selection of bowies if "utilitarian" is more along the lines of hacking off limbs.

His wife is. She still sends out emails regularly, giving updates.

There were apparently a lot of his designs that hadn't been made yet and they are looking to make a bunch of them.

Doesn’t get more classic than a Bob Loveless (style) drop point hunter.

Lots of folks make Loveless-style hunters. Here’s one.

Pic won’t attach. Click the link if you want to.

Also, there is a lot of phenomenal knife makers out there. I had custom knives made for my dad, brother and nephew out of metal files that my grandfather left me when he passed away.

I would hunt down an older American made Schrade/Old Timer SharpFinger

They were made for decades and are excellent knives. Reasonably priced too.

I've got an old carbon steel Sharpfinger that Fred Perrin owned and gave me as a gift about 20 years ago. He made a nice kydex sheath for it as well.

Under ther tem "Old school" I understand only a wooden handle + classic leather sheath. No micarta handles or black-orange Gerber knives promoted by Bear Grylls (which sucks actually)

I guess OP would like smth like JEO Tec 31 or Ifield 150
https://wildproofgear.com/best-survival-knife/
I would also suggest some Kershaw or ESEE knife, but they are not classy-looking.

Or the Watson Hunter, which to my eyes is just the bigger version of the same knife: https://www.bluelinegear.com/product/Watson-Hunter

Bob makes great stuff. I bought my brother a Dozier in D2. It was about a 7" blade, if I had to guess. It went straight into his outdoor pack.

Ragweed Forge is great. After Ragnar died a couple of years ago, I was afraid the site would disappear but it looks like his family is carrying on.

Any Mora knife is a terrific daily general purpose knife that is classic, but incredibly inexpensive. I have a bunch of them, and I give them as gifts to people all the time.

https://www.ragweedforge.com/SwedishKnifeCatalog.html

The Basic 511 is a modern take on the traditional knife and is a steal at $8

The All Around is my favorite. The only bummer is that they use to make them in different color handles and now it is only available in black.

For old school, get the Classic #1

Another useful blade that is very traditional is the Finish Lynx puukko

https://www.ragweedforge.com/MarttiiniCatalog.html

The other one that rarely gets much publicity but is a great knife is the Canadian Belt Knife. The one thing it does better than almost any other utility blade is that it works really well as a camp blade, i.e. one you use to slice food or spread butter on bread, as well as all the classic outdoorsy stuff that a knife has to do.

And any Joe Watson knife kicks ass.

Cecil Burch (and all)

Thanks for all the ideas and links. I might just get two. One less expensive, and perhaps a Dozer as well. I found one at of all places the Fjall Räven store at the MoA, but travel made it unacceptable for cash and carry and I didn’t want to ship. There’s a plethora of great looking knives out there however...

Thanks again all
