I have a couple year old Colt 9mm Combat Commander that I'd like to send out for reliability work, trigger job, magwell bevel, spare extractor fit, and match barrel/bushing fit.

I'd love to have a full custom Heirloom Precision but its not in the budget. I email John Harrison about one of his packages, but he's not taking in guns.

Any recommended 1911 smiths taking work?

My buddy has had a pistol on Bruce's bench for quite a few years. I didn't know he was taking new work

Not positive that he is, but I do remember hearing him say that he was working on them again, just not sure in what capacity; might be worth a shot? Maybe check with the crew over at 1911 Addicts .com, I know Chuck Rogers is a regular there; I'm sure someone could steer you to a qualified smith.

I am very happy with the work Dave Laubert at Defensive Creations did on a S&W revolver for me. I've seen a few of his 1911s and am recommending him based on the combination.

I suggest Evolution Armory. They have lots of experience with Colts, in fact one of the main 'smiths there worked in the Colt Custom Shop.

Another plus one for Laubert. And pus one for Evolution. I've got a .45 colt commander from Evolution/David that is truly exceptional.

Another one you might consider is sending a Colt to Nighthawk custom. I'm sending a Colt Commander 9mm there for a full build. I've got guns from Yost, Williams, Garthwaite, MARS, and others. And I'm really excited about the build I'm having them do on the 9mm Colt. I also think they've got pretty good insight into 9mm builds. It'll also cost me at least a thousand less then some of the other shops.

Chuck’s books are closed. I recommend Jim Gathwaite if you’re looking for a functional affordable (relatively speaking) piece.

I would also include Novak as a shop you should consider. Some of their full custom builds look terrific and they also take on smaller jobs.

Wilson Combat also does custom work on Colts with a good turn around time.

Novak did re-open but I think they’re only building guns to their spec.

Looking for a retroish flavor too. 70's 80's fighting/carry pistol. Garthwaite sounds like a good possibility if he's taking work. I've seen some fine examples here.

I'll check some others too. Thanks for the suggestions!

Garthwaite if he's taking work, but last I heard he wanted to do full-house builds and less bits and pieces. Evolution Armory was a good suggestion. Nighthawk hasn't been mentioned, but they would certainly be on my list.

Frank builds a helluva gun. I sure wouldn’t bet against this pistol. I haven't sent him work in a looong time, so I don't know how he's doing.

Garthwaite is still taking work, but full builds, I think

I’ve had a great experience with Bob at nighthawk recently. And the scope of work the OP lists, might be perfect for them

I've been admiring his work for years.

Plus, and a huge one, he's a valued member here.

Yep, you're right -- my mistake. Their work looks real nice though.

I don’t think Burton is taking new work right now. But he’s in here some. His place to say.

Virgil Tripp especially 9mm guns. He'll get them squared away like nobody's business.

AJ is still working on guns to the best of my knowledge; a couple months ago he did some work on my friend's Professional.

Bob Cogan at Accurate Plating & Weaponry (http://apwcogan.com/) is very good with 1911's, Browning HiPowers, and has done some great revolver work for me. He did 4 projects for me this year and the turn around was less than 6 weeks in each case, which I think is pretty fast these days.

He has been working on my USPSA raceguns since the mid-90's when his shop was in Tampa. I have never been disappointed.

While he does good gunsmithing work, if you want something refinished in hard chrome he is the go to guy for sure.

Dave Sams does a lot of 9mm 1911 work. More than .45s the last time we spoke.
This is the machine rested 10 shot 50 yard group he test shot with my Springer.

Pardon the thread drift, but does anybody know if John Jardine is taking work? He co-hosts classes in the Bay Area regularly, but I keep forgetting to ask him if he's taking work. His personal gun always runs like a sewing machine. I'm not sure I can afford him, but I hear good things about his pistols.

I talked my father-in-law into sending his father's Colt Commander in to Wilson Combat for some much needed attention and TLC. The pricing seemed right, and the workmanship they put into the gun seems to be on par with their reputation.
