Something to keep tabs on. Putin has already made some pretty significant reforms in the last 5 years that solidified power under his direct span of control without checks/balance, and from what I understand this is him basically mirroring moves made by Erdogan in Turkey to further consolidate power.

He might as well crown himself Tsar Vladimir IV and get it over with.

He might as well crown himself Tsar Vladimir IV and get it over with.Naw -- that might cause problems. This is Dictatorship2.0: keep a soft, procedurally "legitimate" velvet glove on that iron fist...

Isn't it reasonable to say that Russia and China have both in fact evolved to Fascism, not Communism?

Everything through and by the state, with a frosting of capitalism to help with organizing the masses.

There is no much difference between Fascism and Communism. They are cousins. In both cases everything through and by the state.

Fascism is fine with corporations and wealth, as long as they know their place (and the big boss gets his cut). Putin’s handed out a few object lessons to the oligarchs.

They have the same roots. Mussolini was a member of the Socialist party of Italy and the editor of the Socialist Party newspaper Avanti! There are some differences of course. For example, nationalization of businesses in the Socialist economies vs government control of the business in the Fascist economies. The both ideologies reject the free market, however. Their totalitarian nature and methods are very similar.

For sure, China today is a National Socialist state like the 3rd Reich.

I agree that China (and Russia) are truly national socialist states, but without the antisemitism of the 3rd reich, really not comparable.

Then what would you call him taking 340,000 troops in 2016 and consolidating them into a new agency directly under his control?

He reformed the organizational structure to make it more efficient to carry out his goals, especially when those goals conflict with the goals of the Duma or constitutional limitations of the military.

You usually can't drop the Montoya meme on somebodies first use of a word, either. You know, "you keep using that word".....

They're both very anti-Semitic. It's just that Soviet Russia tossed all the other groups into camps with the Jews, and China doesn't really have a Jewish population to oppress.
If China had a sizeable Jewish minority, they'd be in camps along with the Uyghurs.

The Nazi put Jews into camps, the Communists did the same to the certain classes. The same method (Imprisonment based on assumed collective guilt) , different criteria. BTW this is where the identity politics always lead.

And to think of all that the Jews did for the cuisine of the Chinese...not to mention borscht. It's fakakta.

In China, one might suggest that you tell that to the Uighurs (https://theintercept.com/2019/12/29/why-dont-we-care-about-chinas-uighur-muslims/).

You're right it's not quite the same without mass expulsion and extermination.

In this case, in exchange for their territory, Uyghurs will be assimilated into the Chinese.
