Yeah, pretty much this... I have a Stockade on order that might ship any day now.

But, between the barrel swap idea I might just put out a BOLO for Savage short actions...

I found locally a Savage BVSS in 223 with fluted stainless barrel very cheap - am using it "as is" for now but it may end up being a donor for 6mm something in future. I got a "Cabelas only" Savage 10 in 223 (but available in 308 and 6.5Cm) with heavy barrel, threaded, Accutrigger, and Accustock that I just put in a chassis - that is about the cheapest way I know to get into a "poor man's" PRS like rifle.

I have been thinking about getting a 6.5CM barrel for my 243. If I shoot up all of my 243 components that barrel might start being on its way to be tired anyway. I plan to put the Stockade under this, but might poke around for anything in stainless, if it has the 308 bolt to start with that would just be bonus.

Or maybe just set back to freshen up the 243. But this is more my path to both 6.5CM and experimenting with doing the Savage barrel swapping.

Of course they did after I bought more expensive chassis. If you want replacement stock for Savage SA - I suggest you look at the Oryx. I have built three now - two 223 Wylde, one 6CM. Have 6 Dasher waiting on BF sale now.

Or stay with .243/6mm caliber and go 6 Creedmoor.

I ended up disassembling the Savage BVSS 223 - sold stock and barrel on eBay for more than I paid for rifle. Bought a 26inch 223 Wylde 1-7 M24 SS barrel and installed it myself with go/no gauges. It shoots really well and is my PRS trainer with 80grain ELDM/SMKs. Put into Oryx chassis. Went so well picked up another Savage SA and built my shooting buddy a clone. Savages may be "cheap" but they are easy to work on and amazingly accurate.

I thought about that, but I sure have a lotta 243 stuff if I was going to do that. Who knows, I need to quit buying impulsive stuff and get on this project.

Snipers Hide has been my enabler for long range stuff on their PX area. Gentleman there was selling new 224V, 223Wylde, or 6.5CM barrels for $230 shipped each - I bought two of the 223Wylde with 1-7 twist - I suspect they are Shaw. They shoot well and the 223 Wylde chamber lets me load 75 or 80 ELDMs or 80SMK to 2.5inch length in a MDT AICS style mag.

I recently picked up a lightly used 6mm Dasher CBI barrel for Savage small shank for another project.

That sounds like a nice deal. I have been thinking about just getting a 6.5CM barrel and putting it on my long action that has a silly skinny 7mmRemMag barrel on it right now.

So long 223 in a 308 length mag, good idea. I also recently picked up a buttload of 77gSMKs so I got that going for me.

I have often thought I should just troll for Savage short actions and just buy em up and re-barrel.

Trick is to buy a Savage short action with 223 or 308 bolt face (preferably with top bolt release but bottom bolt release works too) with AccuTrigger, heavy barrel, and better stock (AccuStock) for $500 or so. Then disassemble (assumes you have the vise, wrench for barrel nut). Step 3 is sell the heavy barrel on eBay (example of bidding drives up price) and also the stock. End state is a SA action for less than $200 (maybe "free"). Buy a barrel from Shaw, NSS, etc. Assemble yourself with action vise, barrel nut wrench, plus go/nogo gauges (got mine from NSS). Get a stock-chassis that enables you to use AICS type mags (I use MDT mags) - I use Oryx chassis for Savage SA. Screw it all together then add scope rail, rings, scope of your choice. Brake of your choice. Off to the races.

There was an article in one of the gun culture mags (as opposed to the older fudd mags) about doing something similar from the perspective of building a gun for your kid that would grow with them.

Another option is to buy a Remington or Remington clone action and go with a Remage setup. The nice part about the Remington is that the options are endless...stocks, triggers, bottom metal and magazines.

No kidding. There's a reason I'll never buy another 10/22 and it isn't because they're bad guns. I've managed to not go deeply into the Savage rabbit hole with my Hog Hunter, though it did get a wood stock and removable magazine...

But then there's the 3x3, the ham radio stuff, bikes, large format cameras, etc. Lots of tinkering to be done...

<sigh>

It was due late Spring 2021, then late Spring arrive and now it's due mid Fall 2021.

I get that there are all sorts of delays and such associated with Covid, but for a product to be nearly 2 years late tells me they weren't at all ready to release this when it was announced. I'm surprised they had something to photograph.

I'm glad I don't *need* the stock because after waiting this long, I would have bought something else and forgotten about the vaporware.

Sort of on point with this thread -- has anyone looked at these from Savage?
They look a little heavy, but look like they would be a pleasant weight to shoot, at close to 9 pounds, with a pretty handy 18 inch barrel.
The magazine reviews have indicated very good accuracy, at least in 6.5 creedmoor. https://www.americanhunter.org/content/hardware-savage-110-magpul-hunter/

Real world online pricing is right around $800, it looks like.

Their scouts are nice. Well the old ones. Not the ugly muzzle break ones. Especially if you just keep with the peep sights.

Though, after waiting for a few years, I went and glass-bedded my classic monte-carlo stock, so I may not need Magpul's any longer. From the time it was announced until sometime last year, I was literally, money-in-hand, ready to buy the moment it dropped. Now...not so much.

What do you think so far? How was the fit?

I've got Magpul's page bookmarked, but now that I've glass-bedded the stock on my Savage (resorted to that after yr 2 of waiting), I'm not sure I need this anymore. Still keeping it in the back of my head in case I want an alternative.

I like it so far. Fit was good once I realized I was using a too small hex key (doh) - one of the biggest appeals to me is that it included everything needed to convert my blind magazine Hog Hunter to magazine fed. I want to say the R700 versions require an additional mag well.

I do wish the wrist was a little more upright, but it’s workable.

Maybe the information is already available somewhere, but….

Any chance you weighed both stocks while you had the gun apart?

I’ve wanted to get one of these and install the Magpul stock, but not if it’s going to add a bunch of weight.

That’s what this one is, a .308 Hog Hunter. I don’t have a scale handy right now, though. The MagPul is heavier, but not by a huge amount.

I pulled the irons shortly after I bought it years ago. They have pretty chunky profiles.

OT for this thread, but that reminds me I’d like to find a .308 version of the now discontinued Stevens 200 which has a 10/110 based action. I have one in .223 with a Nikon 1-4x, and it makes for a cheap, handy tossable rifle.

Waking this up to note that they are out there in all three colors other than black for a smoking deal. I bought mine from Grab-A-Gun (https://grabagun.com/magpul-hunter-110-stock-for-savage-10-110.html), but they are at a few other places for the same price. And shipping was not a rip-off, shipped to Ohio with tax (7.5%) was $145. I plan to convert it to a 4.275in action (https://www.predatormasters.com/forums/threads/modifying-a-new-4-4-savage-stock-to-fit-an-older-4-275-action.358883/), how hard can it be?

I just got one for my Ruger American Ranch (300BO) and paid $200, and was happy enough with it to consider one for the Savage 243 and when I went looking I about crapped when I found it for $116, and I went from considering to clicking. The black ones are still the normal price (ETA: I wanted the Gray, so it worked out for me).

I have a Savage Target Action I snagged from awp_101 and was wondering just WTH I am gonna do with that impulse purchase. I have the 243 in a Stockade Woodchuck (http://www.stockadegunstocks.com/3.html) that is a 4.275" action, the single shot action would be a better mate with that blind mag stock (thinking maybe 223, or maybe a fast twist 22-250 if I am feeling frisky?). So the MP Hunter will be a funner fit for the 243 (I have a buttload of components) and if I klutz up relieving the action screw hole it gets hidden by the bottom metal.
