Have a Son away to college. He was just home for Christmas and he has shown interest in taking some type martial arts for real world application. He has a couple years of boxing. Do any of these stand out as “Id check this one out” ?
Thanks in advance for your input.

If it were me I'd start with evaluating these two as they seem the closest "known quantity" (both from Carlson and Roller Gracie lineages). It's not clear if the owners of the A Force outfit are black belts, or not.

Thanks Hes going to MatClub tomorrow.

I didnt consider the OKC class because its pistol too which he cant have because of his age and also school policies. However on reflection I think you are correct, It would be better to take that now and take a IAJJ/IAP later if it fit his schedule.

Contact him. Your son may be able to just do the IAJJ/IAC block and not the firearm block.

ETA. Or vise versa.

There is one other gym I omitted from my list. I sent the owner an inquiry and here is what he responded
https://www.warriorsciences.net/
My martial arts background is traditional martial arts, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, MMA, Filipino Kali, Combatives, and Bruce Lee's JKD

My strength and conditioning background is a certification in Strength and Conditioning through the International Sports Science Association about 20 years ago. I continue my education daily and have for the 32 years I have been training.

I've trained world record holders and world champions in multiple sports. I train athletes from all over the country and have done it full time for 12 years both on site at my training facility and remotely through online programming.

Goju Ryu 3rd degree black belt under Don Douglas, also learned Muay Thai from him as well.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Brown Belt in 1999 under Pedro Sauer Black belt Diego Maleigha. I do not teach the Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Seth Edwards is a current brown belt under Craig Campbell and teaches the formal BJJ program. I teach the Catch Wrestling portion of the mma program that I learned from Ken and Frank Shamrock.

There are no "belts" in Filipino Kali, or JKD. I trained with Dan Inosanto and many of his top students for that knowledge.

MMA was learned from Ken and Frank Shamrock and many other people over the last 30 years. Hey

I would stay as far away as possible from the last two. Everyithng on their website screams red flags all over the place.

Either of the first two look very good. The judo place is interesting. Legit judo, and they seem to embrace BJJ (unlike most judoka), but they are not clear on the level of the BJJ instructor. I get the sense it is likely a purple belt. Which is not awful, but not really good when there are legit higher belts in the area.

He or you should look at a academy that has a instructor that you can trace their lineage to a reputable person. Make sure they are legit and things check out. Usually if they have high level instruction and seminars come in, it is usually a good sign that they are pushing the ball forward and are in good standing.

Then he should try a few gyms he is considering and go with the one we’re the vibe is best. This I feel is the most important aspect. He should find a place we’re the environment and people are the kind of people he wants to be around. You could have a powerhouse of a BJJ gym and the vibe and people suck. It really is a personal choice one you have whittled down the places and are considering only the quality places that check out.

Just my 2 cent

I forwarded him the sticky from Cecil Burch. After reading that, which he has, he should be able to make a sound decision.
