So I am considering going to the IDPA match in BC later this August.

I can not make heads or tails of the import, prohibited, restricted nonsense. I'm sure it is because I have the attention span of a nat on crack when it comes to reading through government websites. If someone can give me the cliff notes I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

The handguns that you'd want to use for IDPA would be classified under Canada'a Firearms Act as either restricted or prohibited, but no prohibited firearm may be newly imported to Canada by an individual, so you're limited to a restricted handgun. To be restricted, the barrel length must be 106mm long, or longer, and it cannot be .25 or .32. (E.G.: A Glock 17, a full-size M&P, and a 4.15" (or longer) 1911, all would be restricted. A Glock 19 with the OEM (short) barrel would be prohibited. An M&P Compact with the OEM (short) barrel would be prohibited. A Ruger LCP with the OEM (short) barrel would be prohibited.)

In Canada, the individual must be licensed (http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/information/lic-per-eng.htm) and the restricted firearm must be registered (http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/form-formulaire/num-nom/909-eng.htm). A restricted firearm also requires the visitor to obtain an Authorization To Transport (ATT) (http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/form-formulaire/num-nom/679-eng.htm) from the provincial Chief Firearms Officer (CFO) (http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/cfo-caf/index-eng.htm). (There is no charge for an ATT. You may fax or mail your application. The CFO will expect you to provide a copy of your match invitation and travel itinerary along with your completed ATT application.) The simplest way for a visitor to comply with licensing and registration requirements might be via a Non-Resident Firearm Declaration (http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/form-formulaire/num-nom/909-eng.htm). (A confirmed declaration costs a flat fee of $25, regardless of the number of firearms listed on it. Once this declaration has been confirmed by a customs officer, it is valid for up to sixty (60) days or until the expiration date of your Authorization to Transport (ATT), whichever comes first. This confirmed declaration is also a temporary firearms licence and registration.)

Restricted firearms (http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/fs-fd/restr-eng.htm)
Non-Resident Firearm Declaration (http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/form-formulaire/num-nom/909-eng.htm)

Authorization to Transport Restricted Firearms and Prohibited Firearms (http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/form-formulaire/num-nom/679-eng.htm)

Chief Firearms Officers (http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/cfo-caf/index-eng.htm)

Additionally, to ensure that there are no questions about your compliance with U.S. law, you'll want to stop at U.S. Customs - prior to your exit of the USA - to document the firearms that you will be (temporarily) exporting.

Storage, Display, Transportation and Handling of Firearms by Individuals Regulations (http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/SOR-98-209/index.html) and Regulations Prescribing Certain Firearms and other Weapons, Components and Parts of Weapons, Accessories, Cartridge Magazines, Ammunition and Projectiles as Prohibited or Restricted (http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/SOR-98-462/index.html) apply too, unfortunately.

You'll also need triggerlock(s) and locking case(s) for your firearm(s) and magazines that will not accept any more than ten cartridges.

It is going to be in Chilliwack, BC. Here is a link to the host club.

I have not decided how we are going to get there yet. Trying to find out if the lady has prior commitments.

too bad I'll be back east for the IPSC Nationals that weekend. I can almost see the range you'll be at from my house.

Did you go? I should know but don't recognize your username. Good shoot but it was very hot.

Those that came up from the US for the shoot appeared to have a good time. No problems art the border. They had their paper work in order.

I did not go as the gun I wanted to use in SSP was too short. Next time I will shoot in CDP and get my stuff together sooner.
