View Full Version : The Unofficial-Official Looking For/Found For Sale Revolver Thread

For posting deals you find on old revolvers. No personal ads, those go in classifieds.

Strictly things like, "Hey Rob, I know you're looking for a slab-sided Davis barrel PPC gun with a 3-position Aristocrat Rib. I saw one for sale at my Cousin's Brother's Shop and he said you could have it for 100 pennies."

Or, "Hey Stephanie, didn't you need a .41 Magnum?"

Because we are now at a point where many of the best revolvers were made and no longer are made - we should help each other out.

RevolverRob's want list includes:

1) A slab-side Davis barrel PPC gun with an Aristocrat rib: Preferably the old school 3-position front sight model, but I'd take a newer Aristocrat rib gun. Would be killer if it had a full underlug and a trigger just heavy enough to set off most primers. .38 Special would be fine.

2) Old school speed loaders - I love these things. In fact old school revolver paraphernalia is welcome in general, to include old Fitz grips, old school holsters, grip adapters, etc.

3) Old School (Pre-1960) King's Sight sets for Colt and/or Smith and Wesson revolvers.

If you happen to spot any of those things, help a brother out and make my wife made at me.

Kris Kringle on a pogo stick, I wish you had started this thread back in October/November. The same LGS that regularly coughs up used 36-6 and RRA Poly 1911s had *exactly* this gun in their case. The weird front sight, the rib, the crazy trigger, the Davis signature script... 38 special. I mean, it’s long gone now, but my memory is that it was just north of 800 bucks. I’ll ask Keith if he remembers who bought it. He might.

Good idea for an ongoing thread, but one could go to Collectors Firearms dot com, and click on the “New Arrivals” tab, then bookmark it. Check it Monday through Saturday. Of course, one has to establish a base line, by looking through the entire inventory, at the start.

Yes, custom-barreled PPC revolvers, with sight ribs, happen there, from time to time. There are probably 1911 bullseye pistols with sight ribs, now.

E.T.A.: I have no affiliation with this store. Affinity, yes; affiliation, no.

I may be able to help you with number 3. I'll look this weekend.

And I'm looking for three more grail revolvers. I got a 3.5" Model 27 last week. So the next ones I need are:

Model 19 with a 2.5" barrel, and a combat trigger and hammer. Modified by John Hurst of LAPD.

Model 10 with a 4" barrel. Modified by Guy Hogue of LAPD.

Model 10 PPC revolver with 6" aftermarket barrel and sight rib. Modified by Frank Glenn.

FWIW, I picked up one of the classic arms 10-7's mentioned here (https://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?39769-More-of-those-Getcher-Model-10s)

Either by luck of the draw or because their stock is mostly good stuff, without paying the "hand select" fee I got an finish "good" but mechanically excellent 10-7 off this $249 deal, picked it up this morning. My best intel is this is a CAI import of a Spanish police trade, it had a rack number under the crane area of the frame, no proof marks, but appears to be carried a lot and shot very little example similar to other police trades, pinned barrel, worn out grips (which I tossed immediately), not perfect finish, some scratches, great basis for a project gun or a CCW .38. Very pleased for the dollars spent. I may get another one for a second project I am contemplating.

I had a 10-5 that had a HB fitted to it. It didn't match up at the frame very well. You might want to look for a heavy-barrel 10 that matches your barrel (pinned or not).

Stainless 7.5" Ruger New Model Blackhawk convertible in 45 Colt/45 ACP. It's been shot some but these guns are tougher than woodpecker lips and the price is right. Probably one of the best configurations for a heavy SA revolver on the market today and the ACP cylinder is a huge bonus.

I'd be on it like white on rice if I didn't already have something very similar.

My local Sportsmans Warehouse has a model 37 no dash with a 3 inch barrel for $550. Seems to be in good to better condition, no holster wear and a slight patina on one side of the cylinder. Bore and chambers are clean. It looks like it spent most of its life in some ones sock drawer. I haven't any use for this but if this is a hen's tooth and fair price I may just go pick it up.

Sorry, but if I find one of those I'm selling something to buy it.

My guess is even a pretty bunged up M28 is going to be mid-500s at best around here. Probably more like $600.

But you find weird deals on Gunbroker every once in a while.

It's this item: https://lipseys.com/itemdetail?itemno=RUGP35751

In general, it's like the standard GP100 barrel, just with the underlug milled off so the lower half is round back to a shroud that protects the ejector rod. AFAIK, GP100s have really only had three profiles:

Standard, full underlug
Half-lug, like these
Half-lug with flat sides, like the Match Champion .357

I'm not aware of any "pencil," "heavy," and "bull barrel" variation like you see with S&Ws. (And I'm going to pretend all the milled flat angle sides and underlugs from S&W just never happened.)

I don't have an opinion on that, unless there's something I don't know about Cerakote and revolvers. I think it looks kinda cool actually. But the pitting really kills it in the looks department. And I know a lot of people just despise moon clips.

Maybe after it fails to sell a second time they'll take the hint and lower the price.

Girlfriend’s best friend lives in Southern AZ and wants a handgun suitable for shooting dangerous snakes. She has no money and no real interst in guns. I’m thinking an inexpensive .38 with CCI snake shot. Gun will likely shoot no more than 50 rounds total in its lifetime. I may try to talk her into a used .410 single shot shotgun. So far, cheapest online solution seems to be the Rock Island Armory Model 200 4” at around $250. Anyone handled one? Anyone got something else they’d like to get rid of cheap so I don’t have to check every pawnshop between here and Tombstone?

Someone brought the snub one to Greg Ellifritz's snub class this summer. I got to fire a few rounds out of it at the end of the day and was impressed, especially at that price point.

On my radar is a 4in S&W 66-1. 100% sock drawer gun, I'm told it had 'one or two boxes' of .38's through it before it got loaded with Glaser .357's that have been in there since... who the hell knows when.
I haven't seen it yet so I don't know what stocks etc it has on it.
What's a fair 'buddy' price that isn't an insulting lowball? S&W stuff seems to be chaotically priced these days. The seller is an old family friend and I want to do right by them, if it's within my means.
If it isn't, I'll try to make it available here on P-F.

What I found on GB was that by searching for 66-1s under completed auctions (https://www.gunbroker.com/All/search/completed?Keywords=smith%20%26%20wesson%2066-1&Timeframe=1&Sort=1&PageSize=48) and then only looking at ones where there were bids, the transaction prices were $600 and up, with most going for over $700. Which means that if your buddy was going to trade it in at a gun shop, they'd probably offer him $350 or so. If he sold it there on consignment, he might make, oh, $500 or better after the consignment fees are paid.

If he has the box and stuff for it (not likely), then probably add $100 or more to that.

If it were me, I'd offer $4-500 for it if it still works OK.

You could probably find a Taurus 605 or 85 or one of the .22s for under 3 bills, and maybe closer to $200. If I still had the 605 I got rid of a couple of years ago, it’d be a done deal, but I don’t have anything like that around right now.

Is it hiking around snakes, or snakes on her property she’s worried about? A .410 shotgun or .22 rifle might do the trick, really, unless she needs to be able to carry it discreetly while hiking.

I’ll ask around.

Snakes on the property that threaten her dogs. Doubt she would ever carry a handgun or do much practicing which is why I'm thinking the .410 is a better alternative.

Never been terribly impressed with the performance of a .410 - rabbits ran off when shot with them.

Or maybe I missed.

Anyway, 20g seems more effective, with a more dense, even shot pattern.

Anyone looking for a nice Ruger Speed Six 2.75" in 9mm there is one located at Olives Auto Parts in Orofino Idaho with moonclips. Appears to be a sock drawer gun. $475.00
208-476-5576 This not my gun and I'm tapped out at the moment.Well... It looks like Olives Auto Parts had a change of heart about selling the revolver. I called to purchase it earlier in the week, gave them my credit card information, and they said they would call back on Thursday, saying the guy that does their FFL work would contact me to finish the process. Just had to call them back and the price magically went from $475 to $625. They said they didn't have any box or paperwork for it. It's still not a bad deal, but sight unseen without being able to check it, I wasn't quite as keen on it. Zeke, if you happen to go back in there again and they tell you it's 475 again let me know, I'm all in for it at that price. Little bit disappointed at what feels like a mild bait and switch. As a side note, I also purchased a gun from them online. then when I called after completing the transaction, I was told that one was out of stock. Oh well.

I would be leary of the 20 gauge single shot as they seem to kick harder than a 12 gauge pump. I don't know if it is the weight or what the reason is, but I owned an H&R years ago and it was a kicking mule.

The postal inspectors as I understand it are the full 3" as opposed to 2.75" barrels. I have seen some for sale on GB in the last year for about $1,100 including the box, but that was before the madness. They are pretty rare based on how seldom I have seen them for sale. The speed sixes are getting harder to find in decent condition. At a glance, I cannot tell the difference between the standard and the PI version just looking at the pictures.

it looks....off.

I was thinking the same, either parts gun or conversion. It's got the new type rear sight with the rounded tang combined with a case-colored hammer and trigger, which look odd but could be about right for 1994 production when that combination of features showed up on the Model 29 and 629. It makes me want to see the serial number on the butt under the grips.

Then I found this on the S&W forums:

60814

And then I found this: http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-revolvers-1980-present/437861-model-625-variations-informal-pictorial-essay.html

So apparently S&W mixed dot-matrix markings, stamped markings, and laser-etched markings on the same gun. And apparently the mid 1990s were big transition years. And apparently some of their dot-matrix serial numbers DO look like they were applied by someone with a center punch and a hangover.

I have no idea whether the gunbroker example is legit, but I'm reminded that with Smith & Wesson, anything is possible.

A saved search on evil-bay is certainly a good way to cast a wide net. You might want to created saved searches for “Spegel grips” as well, and use “Michaels of Oregon grips” as a search term, too. If Butler Creek sold this type of grip, well, add it, too.

I get plenty of hits for the various rubbery grips, with just my saved search for Spegel Grips, because the sellers will often list Craig Spegel as the designer.

I have noticed this seller pushing out some 686-5's, several per week, that are apparently some security company trade in guns.

The attraction to some will be the fact this is the last pre-lock version I believe, with most of the important early mods they made across the life of the L frame. Those are also less common round butt 4" L frames that have the extra hole drilled in the top strap that will allow installation of a C&S fixed sight in place of the S&W adjustable sight without drilling and tapping the frame if that floats your boat.

Not a great bargain nor a terrible buy it now price in the context of the current market. I assume security company guns like LE guns were carried a lot of shot very little.

There is a S&W 30-1 3 inch for sale on a local gunboard. I don't know the seller, but it looks (https://www.waguns.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=119960)like a decent gun and the price is good.

Get thee behind me, tempter! The reblue is pure sexy.

The non-reblue has a certain MILFish hotness, too. Could still probably take a deer with it.

Okie John

The beater went for $2,325 and the reblue for $4,275.

I knew Triple Lock Targets commanded a premium, but ouch.

But it was a documented factory re-finish, which is actually pretty cool.
Given the low serial number and condition, the sold price was not all that bad.

Egads! Swear there was a pristine nickled one of these at a dealer a couple or three years back that was tagged around $1800. And it sat, and sat, there for about a year before it moved. Kept looking at it, back then, but couldn't quite bring myself to grab it at that price...

There's a fixed sight 6.5" with about half of the original finish starting at $4,000 with no bids, and a buy it now at $4,200.

$500 is a good price. I bought a pristine 31-1 for $500 last year. Those are creeping up in price as people figure out that S&W will never make another 32 anything. Mine is a 60's vintage and high quality.

That sold for a reasonable price.
I have an exact clone, including the Tyler-T, and paid right at $500 several years ago.
Got my copy from the original owner in like new condition with exactly 45 rounds fired.

Yeah, no kidding on the price. I expected it to go for $75-$100 more.

I will admit to a fascination with the things. I like the feel of them better than the 640 series.

I put 60 rounds through a Rossi 720 a month and a half or so ago. Cowboy loads and middle of the road Remington fodder. It aggravated my tendonitis and carpal tunnel bad enough to affect my grip strength and I'm just now getting to be (almost) pain free again. There's no way I could even begin to get proficient with that 296. I'm not even sure .44 Russian Trail Boss loads would be doable at this point.

Don's Estate Jewelry & Loan
34507 Pacific Hwy S #1

Some wear, but cosmetically OK. I'm not enough of a Colt guy to assess mechanical condition or issues. The kid behind the counter was far less helpful than he imagined and would not shut up so check this one out in person before you invest.

I hadn't properly coonfingered a D-frame since the Carter administration but, as Thelma said, "I finally understand what all the fuss is about."
