View Full Version : How many red dots for a three day class?

So YVK is taking a three day TPC class now.

Day one, several hours into the class, his DP Pro on his Shadow 2 goes Tango Uniform. Standard failure.

44849

Unfortunately, in an effort to cozy up to a good looking girl in class, he had loaned his number 2 Shadow with the SRO. He decides to carry on with his iron sight Shadow upper and not immediately recall his SRO pistol. When the day ends, he retrieved his SRO CZ, and the optic is totally loose, wobbling around. Apparently, while Mesquite has multiple casinos, it has like zero places that sell loctite, not even considering the PF approved “vibra tite.”

Remember, day two hasn’t even started, and poor YVK is triaging a choice between iron sights on his Shadow or his Glock 19/RMR carry gun.

So the answer to the question of how many red dot pistols, is all you have plus two more.

Corrections:

1. Not several hours in the class. The DPP died one hour into shooting, way before lunch.

2. As a rule, good looking girls cozy up to YVK, not the other way around. In this instance, a fellow shooter had the only gun go down so I offered my spare. I did the same in a Stoeger class for a 40+ year old, mild to moderately overweight man. I would offer a spare gun even to you if yours went down. Hell, you matter to me so much, I would even offer you my only gun if yours went down. Class acts are looks- and gender- neutral.

3. You don't need to bring a dot at all. 1.5 mm yellow fiber optic under AZ sun and attempts on 100% target focus made the day quite productive and challenging

I'm hoping you guys don't jinx me. I'm signed up for a TPC course next spring, plan on taking two SRO-affixed pistols, and if both of those go down, I'm in a fix. With my eyes, front sights (black, painted, or FO) all pretty much look like a glob of fuzzy lint.

That said, I was cleaning one of the SRO-equipped guys (G19.5) after the last range session, and the suppressor height front sight was about two turns of the screw from flying off. Since degreased and Loctited back in place.

I'd have less anxiety about a directly attached SROs. Mine is on an aluminum CZC plate, with shortened screws, etc. I don't know if it is the same degree of security vs direct steel to steel.

My class “experiences” have been a day on a Rogers range(500+rounds), a TR course-3days~750 rounds and a one day “Test Day” w/jlw-around 300 rounds. Not high volume compared to “well heeled” shooters.
ACRO and RMR2 worked fine; plates loosened on both setups in less than 500 rounds estimated. That I’m blaming on the installer-me-being too frugal with with the Vibratite. No issues after reinstall, but not stressed with a high round count.
Of other interest is one suppressor height front sight loosened. My comment here is that the bigger(relatively speaking)sight may be “stressing” the mount setting, I.e., the thread locker.
Lessons:
1. Careful installation; degrease and plenty of threadlocker. I think gjm used the word “slather”...
2. Have a little kit with screws, thread lock, etc.
3. Practice w/the buis.
4. Wiggle check everything(life seemed a bit simpler with irons...)

And have backups- yvk, you had triple redundancy- good on ya!

When I went to Serbia in September to shoot EHC I had three spare dots in my bag. I didn't need any for the 1000 rounds I went through between the match and training. I did have to stick one of them on my buddy who was with me gun when his failed on the first stage of the last day.

The motion sensor on my DPP did fail not longer after we got back.

So at least three.

I am at a two day match this weekend. After stage one, a distraught woman walks to safety area with a dead DP Pro. I pop the battery compartment and the plus has slipped down. Her husband insists it just needs a fresh battery. :)

While I am standing there, another woman walks over with a dead Pro on her CO gun. I pop the battery cap, see the plus has also slipped down on her optic, pry it back into position with my Spyderco and suggest it may or may not work for long.

Continue to see issues with DP Pro - are you seeing issues with SROs at matches?

Sounds familiar. My first DPP died a similar death. My most durable MRDS has been Romeo 1 (!) but yesterday at the range it was showing signs of a failing movement sensor.

Thanks to you GJM, I know not to go with a DPP. 🙂

Fingers crossed my Holosun does okay when I start my carry optic journey in December

Generally, no.

After reading this thread I will have to respectfully disagree with GJM. A red dot is NOT the way to meet or impress the chicks.

Don't ask me how I know......

Seems like whatever the number is - it need not include dpp or SROs.

Why do we hate the type 2 RMR now ?

I’m out of the loop

I think the RMR has the best auto mode of any pistol optic, has great battery life and is apparently able to survive drops onto rocks that will destroy an SRO. However, many shooting tasks are harder with a RMR than a SRO, and is the reason the SRO is commonly being used in competition where the RMR is rarely used gaming. Older DeltaPoint Pros are actually pretty durable by red dot standards.

I've come across enough to broken RMR's to not think they're magic. They drop better than most, they still don't last forever actually shooting. And the tiny blue screen doesn't appeal

BigT, were these RMR2s? So far, so good on the ones issued at dept., but no high volume shooting. I agree with the difficulty of lens size...(and, if I have your attention, different subject: did those new small Surefire pistol lights ever turn up?)
I’m also aware of some LE w/ Aimpoint ACROs, but they are dedicated “enthusiasts” if you will; most LE wouldn’t bother with the battery monitoring necessary. GJM I believe had one ACRO in a severe hunting environment, but only for a few days...

Why would there be a debate between irons gun or carry gun with RMR?

The smaller RMR window may be a disadvantage, however, 8000+ rounds on an ATEI machined slide, the type 2 dot has not failed and the optic stays tight.

Hoping to receive my slide back from Agency Arms with the AOS cut next week, and will report on how it works.

Why not? I had an option to continue with the same gun I've been competing with for some time but with irons, vs run my carry G19/RMR. Both options had merits, i chose to run irons. Turned out to be a nice refresher.
