View Full Version : Which Smith & Wesson shield to get?

Mystery

Smith & Wesson has $50 rebate on 9mm shield and 380 EZ so thinking of getting a shield.

Does it matter where I buy the shield for the rebate?
What store has the best price?

Should I get 1 or 2.0? Price is around $50 more.
With or without laser? $75 more.
With or without night sights?

If 1 is good enough, I don't want to spend more.
thanks

I've got a 1.0 w/thumb safety that I've been happy with, especially in a BUG role.

Recently picked up a 2.0 Performance Center 4" Shield. Not enough time on it to opine.

Shouldn't matter where you buy it for the rebate.

My most carried is a 1.0 Shield. I bought a second 1.0 as a trainer a few months ago because with sale price and gift card, I got it for $199, which was significantly cheaper than the 2.0 and I think the performance difference between 1.0 and 2.0 Shields is much less than the performance between 1.0 and 2.0 full-size and compact M&Ps.

That said, for just a $50 difference, I'd probably go 2.0.

I'd buy regular sights then upgrade if needed. Ameriglo and others these day give you a vivid daytime picture and night sights AND the option to go with something other than three dots.

The really question is safety or no safety. Since I carry it appendix, I went with the safety on both the carry and the trainer. It's small and a lot of people don't like it but I train with it and appreciate the peace of mind.

I really prefer the 2.0 , I added an Apex AEK trigger and Heinie sights to mine.

Thanks.
I'm getting one with safety even if it's for IWB.
Can always remove safety if not needed.

What about laser? Any real use for it besides in training?

When it's not grip activated, I'd say slightly less than none.

I ran the original no-safety model for a while before I bought a G43. Great guns and even greater when you crack the piggy bank and get an Apex Trigger kit.

The Crimson Trace Laserguard laser/light combo is pretty nice- it is grip activated, but isn't big and bulky.

Palmetto State Armory has the first gen Shield 9 with safety for $250. So $200 after rebate. The non safety version is $10 more.

I have had a first gen for several years that is in my carry rotation and I have been very happy with it. If I found a 2.0 for $250 after rebate I would probably get it over the 1.0 just to upgrade a bit.

Have a 1.0. Put an Apex D/C trigger in it. Much nicer, but almost too light for a carry gun (for me anyway, and I'm a big fan of Apex triggers). Had the C/T laser on it. Worked fine, but I ultimately decided I could shoot better with a red dot. Now, Shield doesn't get used much, mostly collecting dust, although it's just a personal preference thing. Happier with a P365 with manual safety and red dot.

I have two 9mm 1.0 Shields w/o external manual safety.

Good guns, I personally did not modify them in any way except to black out the rear dots with a Sharpie.

I think the triggers are fine. The mag extension for me gives much improved purchase on the gun.

I wouldn't get the model with built in laser. Less holster options, and the older models like bodyguard that had built in lasers broke all the time, I think that was before they were CT. I'd rather have a pressure switch on the grip for instant activation and the ability to take it off if I wanted to.

What do you mean by mag extension?
Like Hyve?

I bought my first one when they first came out in 9mm, I also bought the 45acp when they came out and I bought the new 4in in 9mm a few months ago.

Midway currently has the seven round Shield mags on sale for $19.41 each. The eights are about $28.

If I was buying my first Shield, it would be 2.0. The factory Shield night sights are pretty good basic night sights.

I've got a 1.0 in 9mm with thumb safety. I carry it regularly AIWB; with talon grips on it I've never felt like I needed a 2.0.
It has been very reliable and is a joy to carry.

unless the 2.0 comes back in stock in the store I am looking at.
Does Smith & Wesson do this rebate once a year or is there another one coming?

I'm perfectly content with my 1.0 without a slide safety. It has trigger work, a Talon grip applied, a Dawson tritium FS, and a blacked out factory rear. No complaints.

I bought another for my wife several years after I bought mine. Her trigger out of the box was vastly improved over what mine was. Nothing needed for hers. Seriously it was a night/day difference. Mine was a skosh over 7lbs out of the box. It now runs 4lb 2oz and hers is just enough heavier to be able to tell so maybe 4.5 to 4.7lbs?

The previous comment about there being less difference between the 1.0 and 2.0 Shields vs. the M&P FS is spot on IMO.

Yes, but tax and shipping bumps it to $230 after rebate.

P365 looks good but its $500.

So this is what happened.
Last week I had Shield in my cart but then I noticed 2.0 for $40 more.
So I put the 2.0 in the cart and went to read 1.0 vs 2.0.
Yes, I should have bought the 2.0 right away.
Next day, I decided and went to the cart but it became OOS. :(
You snooze you lose.
Then I looked for original shield and that was OOS as well.
I mean in the store with free s/h and no tax as that adds $30.
Since the rebate deadline is coming near, I bought original shield today from different store.
Ended up paying $20 more from all this back and forth.
Not the best deal but it's like getting $30 in rebate from the lowest price.
Should be here next week.
If I don't like it, I won't lose too much reselling it.

Just wondering if I find another 1.0 or 2.0 this weekend, can I get rebate on both?
Is rebate 1 per model or is it by household/customer?

Looks like both to me. Emphasis mine.

I honestly can't see very much difference between a 1.0 with a grip enhancement and the 2.0. Some features yes, and it might be worth $30 to $50 more for the 2.0, but the 1.0 is no slouch. You'll be well served by either.

Well, original shield will do me for a while.
I'll have enough time with the shield until next rebate to decide if I want another version.
I'm not planning on doing anything on the shield.
I'll keep it factory to see how it behaves.

Btw, has anyone ordered from lockedloaded?
They have good price on 2.0 but I read few bad reviews that mentioned problems with stock and canceled orders.
So didn't order from them as I was worried about rebate deadline.

Thanks all for comments!

Got it today! I was afraid that it'll just fall from my hands but it really didn't feel that small.
Straight from FFL to the range and fired over 70 rounds.
No discomfort. It shot and felt just like the compact. :)

One FTF but I think it was due to my thumb on the slide.
It doesn't have safety that my thumb can rest upon so need to get used to resting my thumb lower, over the small safety.

I'll add more details in a new thread later but here's a pic.

Congrats. The rubber Talon Grips make a big difference (also comes with a strip that holds the sleeve in place on the 8 round magazines).

Both my sons and I carry the Shield 1.0 9mm off duty, and have for years. My wife CC's a Shield 1.0 9mm. All 4 of those Shield's have served us admirably !

Thanks.
The grip is not bad but I guess when hands are sweaty, more texture will help.

I created a thread with Shield and Compact pictures here: https://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?39792-M-amp-P-2-0-Compact-4-0-quot-9mm-and-Originial-Shield-9mm-pictures&p=966879#post966879

I have had my 1.0 Shield 9 about a year after they came out. It has been excelent. Talon grips are an improvement for sure on them. I picked up a 2.0 9mm when this year and really like it as well. The grip texture is the best improvment. I have an Apex trigger in my 1.0 and it made a huge difference. Not sure if I will Apex the M2.0. I also have a Shield 45 and it is outstanding as well.

I got copy of the receipt from FFL.
I ordered on Friday Dec 6th and paid on that day.
The receipt on the packing doesn't have order date but has ticket date of Dec 9th as they don't process orders in the weekend (7th and 8th).
Should I just upload the online receipt that has order date and not the one that came with the package or both?
Rebate was valid for orders till 8th.
thanks

You ordered and paid on the 6th. The vendor you purchased from should provide a receipt to that effect, and you should be good to go.

I'll email the seller to send me a receipt with order date.
Not sure why there's no order date anywhere on the receipt and the ticket date won't work for the rebate.

Online receipt has order date but the rebate wanted photo/scan of the receipt.

Just google "Smith and Wesson Shield Rebate" and you will do it all online. You will need to take a picture with your cell phone of the label on the Shield box and your receipt. I think you have till 01/08/20.

I've had the 2.0 45 shield for a couple years now.....I shoot it better than anything else I've had and it's been reliable with everything so far, not one hiccup.....
