Your daughter whom is addicted to watching Forged In Fire (https://amzn.to/30SaOn6) talks you into a karambit because her favorite judge (https://dougmarcaida.com) on the show uses karambits and you cut yourself unsheathing the damn thing.

Ow. I think this one (https://amzn.to/35b37vU) I ordered is too big. Oh well, gotta raise strong girls, right? She’s dead set on becoming a bladesmith now :D

Use to post more on a blade forum. We did member reviews on blades. They sent me a Spidie folding karambit. The point was up and in my strong side front pants pocket at work. I reached into my pocket and blade had opened up slightly so the curve blade punctured the heel of my hand. That curved blade had me stuck like a mountain lion claw. I couldn't move my hand away from the blade in my pocket and I didn't want to pull my hand back with the thoughts of what my hand would look like after that.

I then called over my work partner and said to bring the big pair of scissors he had in his desk. I looked right at him and told him to put the scissors in my pocket and cut it open. He looked at me like I lost my mind. I said it's just one pair of pants, CUT IT. Once the pocket was opened I could get the blade out of my paw without ripping the whole hand open. Haven't been a Karambit fan ever since.

The first karambit ep had me on Amazon 5 minutes later to order one from SOG (https://www.amazon.com/SOG-Specialty-Knives-GB1001-CP-Fixed-Blade/dp/B01BHFC482/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2TPRPP7DK3P07&dchild=1&keywords=sog+karambit+knife&qid=1570404823&sprefix=sog+kar%2Caps%2C420&sr=8-2)

I do like it, and haven't cut myself with it yet.

But, I don't think I'd go for a folding one. Too many bad stories.

You may think of taking a dad/daughter trip to Blade Show. She’d find lots of the contestants from Forged In Fire showing their wares there and of course, plenty of vendors selling everything a girl could want to set up a home forge in dad’s garage :)

Go with a gas forge if blades are the pursuit. Easy to burn steel in coal and it's not the healthiest thing to breath in either.

If Audra Draper is still attending, she lives in Wyoming and was the first female ABS Master Smith. I haven't seen her in some years, but knew her pretty well back in the day. (And her husband, Mike.) Good folks.

FWIW - a grinder is going to be necessary, regardless of how you make the blade (stock removal or forge). And a propane forge is probably the best way to start. IF you can't convince her to start with stock removal.

Ram Maramba taught me to make knives both forged and stock removal. The most important lesson I ever got was, you rough the shape out and then you have to do all the things to make the knife function like a knife. That's the part they always kind of cut on Forged in Fire, but it takes awhile.

Can't say I blame her - my wife and I did a really basic "try it" style blacksmithing class, and it was really satisfying to learn to move move metal with heat and a hammer. I'd very much like to learn more. When/if we have a bigger place where we'd have space for it, I'd love to set up a forge and try my hand at making knives. I'm sure the results would be awful at first, but any new skill takes time and effort to become proficient at, so that's fine.

My father collected knives, and did gift me and my brother our first (and my only) Wenger Swiss army knives, but other than retaining a folding knife for general utility (the QuietCarry Chase and sometimes the iQ), which was mostly reinforced by military service, I am not much of an enthusiast for edged tools or edged weapons. My brother does have very nice santokus and other kitchen knives, as he seems to have inherited most of my parents' enthusiasm for cooking. I do hope to maybe learn more things next month with Mr. Burch and Mr. Stilson in their Entangled Handgun next month, as I am open toward the idea of carrying a clinch pick but realize that for me it would a long road until I get to the point of being confident with actually doing so. I see that class as being a stumble towards the right direction.

The welding department at Mesa Community College shares its space with the school's basic blacksmithing class.

Think of it as a very sharp claw with a handle, forget (at least for a while) about reverse grip and all the spinning stuff and it will start making sense to you.

My whole family loves to quote "it will KEAL" :D Doug Marcaida sets a good example for the kids; he's always kind, polite, and positive, but dangerous. Works for me.

Great work with your daughter. She is on the right path.

As someone who has worked a coal forge, I strongly suggest a gas one unless you like black mucus. Sourcing coal (and storing it) can also be difficult sometimes depending on your location. If I ever get enough time to get back into blacksmithing I will be using a gas forge, even though the smell of the coal forge is very nostalgic for me.

On karambits and all the injuries that result, the folding ones must be carried differently than a pocket knife. A pocket knife is typically kept blade rear, preferably tip-down to prevent accidental opening, at the back of the pocket. A Karambit is best kept at the front of the pocket since it must be kept tip up. Because of the chance of it moving, that pocket needs to be treated as if it were carrying a pistol with nothing else in it.

In the end, while interesting, karambits proved less useful than a knife for 99% of what you would do with either. We used them fairly heavily in the Filipino martial arts, and after using them in full contact sparring sessions concluded that for defensive use, the karambit was no better than, and in many ways worse, than a normal knife. I haven’t touched mine in years.

Son & I are FIF fans.

We built a soup-can forge in about 2 hours . Instructions are everywhere.

Now that I have some rural property we’ll probably build a coal forge once I get a barn up.

I suggest buying a pottery wheel and kiln. She can express her creativity safely until she reaches proper age. Developing dexterity and spatial relationship type insight will occur as she turns mud into objects shaped by her hands. Then converting a lump of steel into a beautiful blade will be easily mastered.

Girls + edged weapons: [emoji106]. Good job dude!

My younger girl carries an Emerson mini Roadhouse. The older one likes Spyderco and once got busted at the PDX airport checkpoint with not just one or two, but three edged weapons.

That's awesome.

I know a few bladesmiths. I talked to this guy a few years ago. Not a real polished character but you don't need that in Chama NM. He has lots of business. Sort of your backwoods bladesmith building everything from scrap metal like combine spindles, mower blades and leaf springs. He's more or less a local celebrity.

You're daughter may not get rich as a bladesmith but it could be a very satisfying vocation.

I've got a Joe Watson titanium karambit in my Eagle firearms fanny pack. I'll have to take some pics.

Joe didn't make many of them. It will cut.

LL - I have a couple of spare Tarani karambits if you are interested.
