View Full Version : Homebrewing a G45?

My understanding has always been a G19 top end won't work on a G17 frame due to differences in the locking blocks. Now that Glock has pretty much done that with the G45, has anyone worked out how to make the same thing work using an after market frame?

I traded into a G34 planning to replace the frame with an aftermarket that fits my hand better but was surprised to find the factory full size frame fits me better than a factory G19 frame. That got me to thinking about trying something like a P80 full size frame with a 19 size top end but see my first sentence...

I still haven't gotten to shoot the 34 yet so it might not matter in the end but it planted the idea in my head. Is it still only doable with G45 frames and Gen 5 top ends?

Thanks!

The G5 17 uses the same locking block geometry as the G5 19. The G519 is semi backwards compatible with older 19s(Barrels can be used, but the locking block is different I believe due to the 2 pin set up).

It seems like what you want could be accomplished with some combination of non-standard aftermarket parts, but there isn't a Pre Gen5 OEM solution.

The Gen 5 / M model Glocks have standardized on the G19 style locking set up.

So the 19x, G45, G47 and G17.5 all use the G19 style locking block. As a result a G17.5 slide will fit and function on a G45/19X frame though it will have a gap.

To your question, a Gen 4 G19 slide will fit and function on a 19.5, 45 or 19x frame if you change the back plate to a Gen 5 plate.

This is a good excuse to buy some Gen 5 Gadget SCD’s from Tom_Jones

This ^ Glock also had to move the position of the front rails on the Gen 5 frames back so they would allow for the full cycle of the shorter 19 slides. This is also why you can't modify the earlier G17 frames to work with the 19 locking blocks.

So it’s doable with an OEM Gen5 frame but nothing after market for now. Thanks!

Isn't the OP asking if a Gen 5 G19 slide will fit on a Gen 5 G17/G34 frame?

No, I’m looking to see if it’s possible to build a G45 on an aftermarket frame. More than anything it’s trying to plan ahead and looking for options if the factory 17/34 frame isn’t the improvement over the 19 frame when it comes to fitting my hands.

For the 34 it’s an easy fix. If I want a 45 it looks like my only option right now is to have the factory frame worked over to flatten that verkakte hump.

Try a grip force adaptor first.

I thought those were supposed to increase the girth for those who can palm a basketball or have piano player fingers? If not, I’ve misunderstood their purpose and will give them a whirl before deciding anything else.

I have taken the hump off of a ton of Gen5's. They are more better that way....;)

You misunderstand the purpose.

They were designed to do two things:

1) change the grip angle of the Glock to more like a conventional grip.

2) add a beaver tail to mitigate slide bite on all generations of Glock. The GFA preceded the Glock factory beavertail back straps.

They change the grip angle by filling in the hollow between the tang and the hump on the lower grip so they do make the grip bigger but on a Gen 4/5 where you are staring with a “small” grip it’s not that much extra reach.

On Gen 3 and older guns where you are starting with a “medium” grip it makes it it a large.

I put a GFA on my 41.4 it's already a big grip, but the GFA seemed to help me a lot. I was thinking of getting a grip reduction. Or buy the wolff frame that's supposed to be smaller.

Thanks, I've been following your bullseye 41 thread so that's good to hear.

For reference, I prefer a flat MSH and short trigger on a 1911. That gives me the best fit and feel.

I have big chungus hands, 2XL gloves, but normal length fingers. My solution for my pair of gen 5 G17s was to turn the smaller of the beavertail back straps into a GFA by chopping it down just below the pin holes. This changes the way it sits in my hand enough to feel like a much more neutral grip and keeps me from getting slide bite.

Got my Grip Force adapters last week but haven't had a chance to try them at the range. Also picked up a 19.4 and will try them on there as well. If this works out I think I'm going to be a happy camper.

Looking for a G45 frame led me to this: GSX100 Frame - Pre-Order (https://www.glockstore.com/GSX-100-Frame?quantity=1&color=1) I don't know anything about their stuff or what kind of ETA they're looking at but I think it's interesting.

Close, but they should have designed the hook on the trigger guard better, that design may cause holster fitment issues.

There is also a sharp line on the upper backstrap area that coincides with the line down the grip panel. That corner could cause a hotspot in the web of the hand.

They should have completely deleted the hump on the back strap.

The only advantage to this is it allows gen 4 users to have a G45 style grip.

By far the best third party grip I have used is the shadow systems frame. They also fit all 19 holsters, just like a regular 19. They specifically design it to fit them. Unfortunately, frame only purchases are very limited and they do not make a G45 version, and I have pestered them about it.

It has a few quirks too, but they are pretty minor, and probably quirky to me, and may not be to others.

I agree, it's almost there. I think interchangeable backstraps like Lone Wolf did would have been a better choice than leaving the hump in place. I wonder if that was a cost of manufacturing issue or maybe a LWD patent issue?

After holding the factory 34 and 19 frames back to back, I have a preference for the longer grip. I'd like to get my hands on a bare Shadow frame to see if the lack of hump swings me back to the G19 size frame.

The GSX-100 frame appears to be shipping. Says the 1st shipment is sold out:

Can you do that and blend in a beavertail?

I ended up selling the lower off my G19-5 and buying a new G45 lower so now I have a quasi G45 to back up my G17-5, I really have no use for the traditional G19 configuration anymore, the G45 was/is the sweet spot for me, especially since I always ran at least a +2 oem base on all G19 mags anyway, a flush 17 rounder in a G45 puts me right back where I was overall size and capacity wise and now I have a grip I can really hang on to.
