I stumbled upon this via the Steve Rinella podcast interviewing the author (https://www.themeateater.com/listen/meateater/ep-179-the-weed-warden). So far, the podcast is great so I plan to grab the book. There's a lot of interesting stuff in the podcast like drug growers wearing slip on cattle feet to disguise their tracks.

That depends. How do you feel about carcinogens?

Hush

You can’t be serious about questioning the narrative that if marijuana is legalized the criminal elements will stop doing criminal things involving marijuana.

Outside of the legal aspects the real hypocrisy is the absolute tolerance for the ecological disaster that the grow sites create. The unfettered use of herbicides, pesticides, rodenticides, and fertilizers is a major issue, people will smoke or consume without a second thought.

I was totally confused what this had to do with weedkiller and then I remembered that this was about nacro cops...

Just finished this and really enjoyed it. One thing maybe about this podcast (Mike Ritland is in the dog business) is there was a lotta dog content that was interesting to me. He credits the dogs with a lot of their effectiveness and safety at great risk to themselves from getting stabbed or shot or beat with rocks (said one of their Mals had 116 bites in a 12yr career).

My prior vision of a domestic weed farmer was (like I am pretty sure many people my age) more like a laid off coal miner outlaw that looks like Willie Nelson. He tells the story of reckless and ruthless criminal fuckheads that don't care about anything (land, water, wildlife, people) other than growing the most potent pot in the least amount of time possible, using however much water and concentrated poisonous chemicals it might take.

ETA:

He makes the point that everything they need is already here (guns, plumbing, seed, etc.), all they have to smuggle in are the people and the chemicals that are illegal here, and they use those in concentrations that make the illegal stuff deadly.

Cool, will check out the podcast.

Somewhat related - Murder Mountain on Netflix:

https://www.netflix.com/title/80217475

Looks at the divergence from hippy, relaxed outlaw growers, into hard core criminals. Also contrasts the folks trying to grow legally under CA's new legalization policies. (Spoiler - the folks trying to go legit are struggling with massive red tape, and are at a big competitive disadvantage).

The competitive disadvantage may be the state tax one has to pay to purchase pot legally in states where it is controlled by the state like alcohol. Not sure but I think that's about 75% tax on a regulated sale here. Never bought any so wouldn't know. Liquor tax is pretty high tho. Pot's a big business here.
