Week 28: AMRAP with Reload
results may be posted until 11:59pm EST on Monday 16-April-2012.

Range: 7yd
Target: 8" circle
Start position: holstered
Rounds fired: varies

This is another AMRAP (http://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?3577-DotW-25-AMRAP-Burst-from-Ready&p=60326&viewfull=1#post60326) drill. "AMRAP" means As Many Rounds As Possible.

First, establish a baseline. Time yourself to draw, fire one round, reload, and fire two more rounds (1-reload-2) all on an 8" circle at seven yards. For the AMRAP par time, round up to the next highest half second. So e.g. if you scored 3.01 seconds for your 1-reload-2, your par for this drill will be 3.5 seconds.

Next, using that par time, draw, reload, then hit the target as many times as you can in the allotted time. After each run, check the target and the timer to make sure you know how many actual hits you scored within the time limit.

Starting position is holstered. Whether you use an open holster, retention holster, or concealed holster is up to you. Just be consistent and start the same way each time. If you cannot draw from a holster at your range, simply indicate what starting position you used.

You may perform any type of reload you wish. Just remain consistent and use the same type of reload each time. For discussion's sake, please identify your reload as one of the following:

slidelock / empty gun
in battery / aka IPSC-style speed reload where the gun remains in fireable condition and live ammunition is dropped on the ground
magazine retention / aka any type of "tactical" reload where the magazine or remaining ammunition is pocketed rather than dropped on the ground

You'll repeat the drill a total of ten times. With each repetition, try to push yourself a little bit harder to make just one more hit.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Starting position (open, concealed, or retention)
Type of reload performed
Number of shots fired and number of hits for each rep

G17 in standard USPSA Production rig, speed reload from belt pouch.
Started with a 3-shot run (1R2) of 3.24, so set the PAR at 3.50.
Ran the drill, pushed too much in the middle (and it showed), ran it anyway and it was okay, though not spectacular.

Ran a 1R2 twice after the drill, and got 2.76, and 2.79 for the total.

Starting position: Ready

1R2: 5.40 PAR 5.50

1. 4/5 1L
2. 5/6 1L
3. 5/7 2M
4. 1 Dropped reload on the ground, oops
5. 4/5 1M
6. 5/6 1L
7. 5/6 1L
8. 5/6 1L
9. 6/7 1L
10. 6/8 1L, 1M

1R2 After: 3.78

I am finding that I still get nervous about shooting fast while maintaining hits on target. The very first 1R2 drill today were the first shots fired of my range session. I freeze up when it is time to reload the gun, my focus is on the target still. By the end of the drill, I was a little more relaxed. This just goes to show that I have a lot of reload practice to do. Any suggestions are welcome.

Concealed AIWB
Slidelock reloads

Baseline 1R2: 3.07 –1, redo 3.39 c
PAR set at 3.50

1. 5 shots, 4 hits, 3.23
2. 5 shots, 2 hits, 3.37
3. 6 shots, 5 hits, 1 OT, 3.59
4. 6 shots, 5 hits, 3.39
5. 6 shots, 3 hits, 3.32
6. 5 shots, 4 hits, 3.49
7. 5 shots, 1 hit, 1 OT, 3.59
8. 5 shots, 5 hits, 3.48
9. 6 shots, 5 hits, 3.47
10. 7 shots, 6 hits, 1 OT, 3.64

A few ugly strings in there. After the 5 shots, 1 hit, 1 OT string I wanted to get back in control and I basically did.

Concealed AIWB (Shaggy/T-Shirt) - Slide lock reloads

Trial: 4.87 - Reload was 2.5
Par Time: 5.00

1. 4 Hits / 1 Miss
2. 5 Hits / 2 of them late
3. 5 Hits / 1 of them late
4. 2 Hits / 4 misses (bad grip on reload)
5. 2 Hits / 1 Miss (Just, bad, everything)
6. 5 Hits / 1 Miss
7. 5 Hits / 1 Miss
8. 6 Hits
9. 5 Hits / 1 Miss
10. 3 Hits / 2 Misses (again, everything bad)

Trial: 4.12 - Reload was 2.17

I didn't think I was accomplishing anything with this drill, but obviously I was. My main problem with the extended strings of fire was my sight tracking, or lack thereof. When I could keep track of it, I got my hits, I knew when I missed because I didn't see what I needed to see. Finished off the session with a lot of slow trigger work, making sure I am resetting during recoil, this helped.

Federal AE9FP 147 gr FMJ fired from G19 w/RMR07 holstered in a AIWB Fricke Seraphim concealed under a long shirt; slide lock reloads.

Par test 1R2 = 4.33s, thus par set to 4.5s.

1. 5 shots, 4 hits
2. 5 shots, 4 hits
3. 7 shots, 6 hits
4. 8 shots, 5 hits (1 OT)
5. 3 shots, 3 hits (badly fumbled reload)
6. 5 shots, 3 hits
7. 5 shots, 5 hits
8. 6 shots, 4 hits
9. 6 shots, 4 hits
10. 5 shots, 4 hits

Post drill 1R2 = 3.98s

NOT a great drill for me today. We've been very busy at work and I have not done any dry firing for the past few weeks--my reloads were slow and prone to errors, which lead me to try and push my subsequent shots to try and make up lost time, leading to less then stellar accuracy. Oh well... I also struggled with the FAST, only getting one clean run at 5.39s. Missed a 7 yd shot on the Defoor #1 "Bill Drill", but passed Defoor #2 & 3. 500 pt aggregate was going great until I flubbed a strong hand only shot, completely missing the target; ended with a 467-14x.
