My entry: Yellowstone River, Yellowstone National Park. We had parked near the 35 busses at the turn around and I was wading through the tourists. I leaned over out of view on a slight rise, and snapped this shot. It always makes me smile.

This is a place I've been coming to since I was a kid. My Dad and I used to hike up to it, build a little fire and cook a hot dog for lunch. It's one of our favorite places to take the family for a picnic. This was taken last fall/early winter just before the snow sets in. Lots of memories were made here.

18 August 2010. I took this photo during a 15 hour day doing a field test in the California desert. Each morning it would be 100 F by the time we reached our test site at 0900, and I knew it was going to be a long day. The next day set a record for Imperial CA when it reached 114 F. We were out there with absolutely no shade. It was hot, but every time I look at an Army uniform, I know I played a small part.

Yesterday we paddled 2.5 miles up the creek that feeds a state park lake. Ran out of water and had to turn around.

Ok, I'll play. Not as good but I thought this was kinda neat. Came out one morning to find this guy on my truck tire, believe it is a Cicada bug just shedding his shell. Wikipedia tells me this
" In the final nymphal instar, they construct an exit tunnel to the surface and emerge.[9] They then moult (shed their skins) on a nearby plant for the last time, and emerge as adults. The exuviae or abandoned exoskeletons remain, still clinging to the bark of the tree."

This is "Frank" She was part of our dairy herd before we had to quit. I used to sit on top her whenever we let the girls out of the barn after milking and ride out to the pasture. I rarely get emotional over live stock, but it was hard loading her on the truck. She did get lucky and go to another dairy operation instead of beef)

Return to the tree line from the summit. This was just before Thanksgiving 2018 and there was about a foot of fresh on top of about 3ft of crust/packed. I was really missing my snowshoes. Postholing all the way up and back sucked out loud. Winds were crazy and it was good to be back in the trees.

Found my fly rod in the garage a few days ago. It probably hasn't been out of its case in 25 years. I made a few practice casts in the yard and attached a new leader. Today I went to a pond at a SW Ohio wildlife area and caught a couple bluegill, this one on a fly I tied way back then.

B&W adds a lot to photography. I accidentally stumbled onto that in AZ bumming around Tombstone AZ. I had my camera set to B&W and didn't know it. At first I was pretty pissed off until I saw some of the photos. This is the ghost town of Fairbank AZ. est 1886. That was the depot/post office, later a store. It's been abandoned a very long time. Tombstone didn't have a RR so everything came thru here.

Mind you I'm not really comfortable with the life the old guy leads. The yard is huge and he has a friend that is not in the pic, but still....
PS:
Old? Heck I’m older than him,he has a chance of outliving me!
Note they do NOT have any worries about intruders trying to get in the back yard. That big ole guy likes the family but is extremely suspicious of strangers.

Lon, thanks for this - Gettysburg in general, with the Little/Big Round Top/Devil's Den area and especially the Slaughter Pen, are very close geographically to me and also close to my heart, ever since my first trip there as a Boy Scout....many years ago. If you haven't already, please read "Killer Angels," by Michael Shaara. He won the Pulitzer Prize for it in 1965. It was made into the movie "Gettysburg." I still get goosebumps when I visit there.

Related to Gettysburg...some years ago I met a gentleman locally who was a retired Lieutenant Colonel from the USMC who was teaching outdoor skills at a local college.
He told me that his family had a tradition of military service back to the Revolution and mentioned one of his ancestors who played a role at Gettysburg. (I read about him in "Killer Angels" and other books on the Civil War.)
When I found a picture of Brigadier General John Buford (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Buford) I was floored that the gentleman I met, (also a Buford), was the spitting image. I mean it quite literally.

I agree with your thoughts on the uniforms/heat. I've been in/on/around the locations where the battles were fought - on the same dates in July and was drenched in sweat with considerably less clothing on. When I'm sitting on those very same boulders anywhere near the 2 Round Tops and the Devil's Den and it's sooooo quiet, I can almost hear what must have been absolute hell on earth. What men they were - all of them! We have no clue. It's vital that our children and grandchildren experience these places. Kudos to you for taking yours there!

However here is one from the last shoot in the mountains of ID 2 weeks ago, where she cleaned up money wise:

I spent some time last weekend volunteering myself and some of my heavy equipment cleaning up after a wildfire destroyed 50 homes near me. It was super hot. This pic is of a railroad rail this guy was using as a vertical in an outbuilding he parked an RV under. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191005/b8f40363f4a78829f3b740aa69a6fa24.jpg

Found this pretty lady exhausted on the shady sidewalk at the office. I normally leave nature alone but a couple of folks had already just missed stepping on her and she wasn't moving at all. I picked her up, tried to put her in a tree, put her bill into some flowers but she wouldn't move. Ended up just holding her in the sunlight for a couple of minutes and she finally flew off. It was in the high 80s that day I'm surprised she got cold just from sitting in the shade.

Spent last weekend in Gettysburg. I didn't appreciate the devastation of the Civil War and I still don't think I fully grasp the war in its entirety.
My brother-in-law was a US history major (and teacher after that) and we chatted today about the war. I have a lot to learn, especially being an Expat through middle school where we hit world history vice US history. Three days in Gettyburg is not enough time and I need to go back.
And I need to finally read The Killer Angels, thanks PF for the book recommendation.
Sadly I didn't take many pictures. These are from Little Round Top:

I want to believe.
I couldn't figure out how to make my cell phone camera go out of focus, so I ended up having to just swing it around too fast for it to compensate in order to get the most authentic experience possible...

I love the PMCS admonition to “reject if dented or deformed.” As if anyone would be happy about taking off with a potentially broken 15-megaton thermonuclear bomb.

One other benefit of visiting Little Round Top is that if you watch the movie Gettysburg, you can pretty much see which scenes were filmed there.

Panorama taken at sunset, 18 October 2019, at The Angle, Gettysburg Battlefield. The marker on the left notes the high-water mark of the Confederacy, where the remnants of Pickett's Charge ended. The Copse of Trees is to the right of the marker. The charge started in the tree line in the background between the two larger stone monuments in the foreground. If you zoom in and look to the left of the right monument, you can see the Virginia monument, which is where the charge started.

Well, that's creepy.
Creepy is walking up that hallway at 0300 in the morning and hearing something exhale right by your ear and when you turn around with your fists up read to fight, there’s nothing there.

There's a little bit more history to it though that particular site was out on the edge of town it was 50 acres, mostly undeveloped was an 8-foot fence all the way around the property. The majority of the time there was nobody there but me and her.
I was walking the fence line one day and I turned around she was following me. One morning I was doing my checks and I yelled "Hey Spud" and she came and from that point on that was her name.
I rarely fed her. I never fed her by hand. I would just leave a pile of scraps out if I had them and she would come eat them, unless something else ate them first. She just liked hanging out with me.
