NoVA Visitor

Greetings,

I am visiting the NoVA area through June 8, as a guest of an agency based at Quantico. I will have some free time on weekends and possibly on a Tuesday evening here or there. I am taking Todd's AFHS class in a couple weekends. If there are any KTSG matches or other shooting events in the area, I am game.

Otherwise, I will be studying, working out, and visiting all the historical places in the area.

Any suggestions are welcome!

If you're down by Quantico, make sure you check out the Marine Corps museum. The building itself is a cool piece of architecture and the exhibits are all really well done. Lots of guns and ordinance to look at, if you're in a hurry, and also a lot of oral history/interview materials related to the exhibits for WWII to the present. It's one of the best ways to spend a few hours in that neck of the woods.

I really recommend the National Air and Space Museum's Udvar Hazy Center (http://www.nasm.si.edu/udvarhazy/) located near Dulles Airport. The Discovery Orbiter is supposed to arrive at Udvar-Hazy in April, replacing the Enterprise which is headed to the Intrepid in New York.

Summer in the DC area is a great time to see Evening Parade (http://www.marines.mil/unit/barracks/Pages/eveningparade.aspx) and/or Twilight Tatoo (http://twilight.mdw.army.mil/).

Absolutely seconded on JSG's recommendation of Udvar Hazy.

The Spy Museum in DC is pretty neat, too.

The battlefield at Bull Run/Manassas is a good visit.

The battlefield at Sharpsburg/Antietam is a great visit. Of all of the eastern ones, it is literally the most unchanged, compared to the time of the battle itself, so it's easier to envision troop movements and the like if you truck the thing on foot.

The Range in Stafford has IDPA-ish competitions on 2nd and 4th Wednesdays, which I'm starting to do, this year. http://www.indoorrange.com/

Thanks all. Will be hitting the USMC museum multiple times. Will try the air and space museum this weekend. I don't have enough ammo for two classes, just Todd's class and some matches. I have an international roommate and may drag him to a match to see us gun crazy Americans at play / work.

There is a USPSA match at Quantico on May 13th. Not more than a mile or two from a couple of agencies that host international students. If work allows, I'll be there.
