The first discussion on this (https://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?36949-I%92m-a-sucker-for-waxed-canvas) got sidetracked. I like this Hill People rig (https://www.amazon.com/Hill-People-Gear-Heavy-Foliage/dp/B00Q3HZQIU), but cheaper would be more gooder.

There's a knock-off on Ebay for about half the price .... I'll see if i can find it.

I'd recommend the runner's, stubby or original kit bag. They're well worth what they cost. The one with molle straps is a bit over the top, but I've been using an original kit bag for hunting and hiking for the past 8 years. It looks surprisingly no worse for wear given all I've put it through. It's super handy having a place for your phone, wallet, keys and pistol (or grunt tube, call, etc) when hunting that keeps your hands free, doesn't encumber your waist, yet all remains easily within reach.

HPG were bragging on this "operational" use of their bag by this pilot pictured herein. I got the molle version and it's a bit as you said however I've gotten some use out of them lacing stuff on there hunting. I wouldn't mind a bigger version with a little more room.

The Snubby will probably be too small for a lot of people. I have a Snubby, a Runners, an Original, and a Heavy. The Heavy gets the most use in the woods. I’ve got a Blue Force three cell Ten Speed pouch on the front. I keep a compass in one cell. Last month I was turkey hunting with a single shot so I kept extra shells in another cell. When hunting with an AR I can keep a mag in it. Inside I keep my licenses, private property permits, knife, etc.
The Runners I use a few days a week exercising. I carry a pistol, phone, house key, and badge wallet. The Snubby is a bit tight with all that.

You won't regret spending a few extra coins for the read deal HPG IMO. Super quality.

I have the HPG Original Kit Bag v.2 (http://hillpeoplegear.com/Products/CategoryID/1/ProductID/71). It's exactly what you're looking for. They advertise it as their largest bag, but I don't find it that large. I'm not a huge dude, and I can't imagine bothering with a smaller chest pack.

I run the heavy recon version slick but with my becker BK17 knife & sheath attached to the bottom molle which works out nicely. I wore that setup on a 3-day Kings peak backpacking trip in the High Uintahs pretty comfortably. Primary gear selection for the kit bag is survival essentials, navigation gear, and firearm/spare mag.

HPG must have expanded their line. I should go there more often. I don't recognize this one. Appears like the larger one I pined for.

I too am in the market for one for my upcoming Wyoming trip. Been eyeing the HPG and I think I found a low profile one that will fit my S&W1006.

I’ve also been eyeing that Emerson knockoff but knowing how Chinese manufacturing works have yet to pull the trigger.

Does anyone know if HPG offers discounts or sales?

This setup works quite well for me. I just wish I had the chance to use it more! The kit bag is a really good piece of gear.

I don't recall any sales/discounts. IIRC I was just happy to get one.

Mine is an original and it's got room for a pistol, a small FAK/TQ, and my GPS/wallet/keys. They sell a shock cord for running, and whether you buy one or make one, I prefer to use it even when walking.

The only down side, which may not be as bad on the 2.0, is carrying a revolver. If I stuff my Single-Seven in the bag without a holster it is secure, but the front edge of the cylinder hits me squarely in the sternum. To carry it comfortably I have to carry it muzzle down with the grip exposed. I do not that that problem with a 1911.

I face planted once out running with my a G19 in one. That pistol knocked the wind out of me legit. I got to my feet and a real old timer was walking past and said "I bet that hurt." LOL

Rib looked like it was bulging out but it wasn't broken. It was months before I could bench 25 lb dumbells. That was the end of my neutral/forefoot footstrike running experiment!

I have the original HPG chest pack and like it very much. Chest packs are used a lot by fly fishermen, and mfgrs like Simms and Fishpond make some quality variations, such as completely waterproof ones (but also expensive). Places like Cabelas, L.L. Bean and Bass Pro Shops offer some less expensive options.

Depending on what you plan to carry, many of the fly fishing versions may be problematic (or terrific) in that they are designed to hold a lot of small stuff that fly fishers carry. A simpler version might be better for hunting. But check 'em out.

A couple times a year there is a sale where I think the mark everything 5% off.

I use my original kit bag for hunting. Bow, blackpowder and rifle seasons, for at least 8 years. I like them so much I have 5 (original, runners, recon, snubby, heavy recon), covers everything from mountain biking to fishing.

Scot and Evan are good guys who put a lot of thought into their products.

I love the people, the company and the quality of their products. However, I almost never use the chest pack anymore in the field. If you are hiking vigorously and/or in weather, you are either constantly repositioning the chest pack or it ends up covered by another garment. I end up going appendix or using a Safariland thigh rig, which allows me to vent and adjust clothing without taking the chest pack off constantly.

I have an extra Hill People Gear chest bag (I’d have to look to see exactly which one) that I’m not using and likely never will. I can send it to you for exactly zero dollars — which is a little cheaper than the one you linked to.

I’ll get you for this, Jones.

Seems like free shipping is as good as it gets.

If you’re on FB, the HPG group ha for sale ads, you can usually find good, used packs and bags for 20ish $ off

So reading this had me thinking.

I am planning on using this pack as my "Outdoor Recreation" pack - which in my world entails camping, light hiking, fishing, and off-roading. Your post has me reconsidering the packs utility for off-roading. Is it possible to wear this pack while wearing a 3 point seat belt? If I am in an accident will the seat belt tensioner create a hazard with the pack? We wore chest holsters in the tank but we didn't have seat belts.....

No experience with ATVs but it works better staying clear in driving a car than AIWB.
I wouldn't hesitate. Heck I still run with it.
With my normal lifelong footstrike. ;)

All my driving will be in a 4Runner unless I win an ATV at Cabellas along the way.....

Thanks for the reply!

I recall you went for a period of time carrying a 1006? Did you carry it in a HPG bag?

I'm wanting to get the bag primarily for the 1006 and I've read through the HPG forum and haven't seen the 1006 mentioned. I know that full size bag will hold the USP45 Full Size so I'm assuming the 1006 should carry well but figured you may have real world knowledge?

Shouldn't be a problem .... a 5" 1911 for illustration purposes.

Late to the party. But yeah, HPG kit bags are worth every penny and then some. I have a standard size recon kit bag I use during late season when it gets cold. When the temperature drops I break the bibs out which pretty much rules out all belt related holsters and accessories. Largest pistol I've carried in the holster compartment is a 4 5/8" Ruger Blackhawk. There is a lot of utility there.

Just about to pull the trigger on the Heavy Recon Kit Bag. Can anyone tell me why I should get the Standard V2 Kit Bag instead?

Can anyone tell me why I should get the Standard V2 Kit Bag instead?Standard has a less tactical look if you want to be more incognito and a bit more inside space from what I understand. Other than the bottom pals webbing on the heavy recon for my knife, I don't see myself adding anything else to the front of the bag, but if you have a pressing need to accessorize with special pouches, the pals webbing will facilitate that.

single row of PALS on the underside allows for mounting small items such as a knife

Had that design been an option at the time I got my bag I would have gone with the standard V2.
