View Full Version : Backpack holster?

I've got one of those "discreet" pistol carriers (bright red soft case marked "jumper cables" ) that I've used to get a pistol from the house to the truck. A couple of months ago I came into a good backpack from work and I've been using that to conceal the bright red soft case. This works well enough but it's two layers of zippers and openings to get through.
Is there a good carrying system that goes into a backpack? In my case that's just about the ONLY thing in the backpack so a little bulk isn't an issue as long as it securely retains the pistol. I might be going back to a striker fired pistol in the near future so trigger coverage is a big deal.
Thanks!
Why not carry on body??? It’s much preferable
If you just won’t/ can’t carry on body check out VERTX...they have what you want

I do carry where I can, this is for a larger backup/truck pistol. As an example, I usually carry a Shield because it's harder for me to comfortably conceal a larger pistol but the backpack pistol could be my 92 compact or even M9A1.
Thanks, I'll look at the VERTX stuff.

Not a concealment option per se, but when backpacking I've come to prefer either a tanker-style rig, or a tactical thigh rig, as neither are impeded by the backpack in terms of wear or access.
Otherwise, might want to check out some of The Wilderness' Safepacker options.
Best, Jon

Something as simple as this (https://tacticalgear.com/condor-universal-holster-od-green?hp=y&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI-aCSg72e4gIVELvsCh38bglrEAQYAyABEgIPdfD_BwE#/22486/13631,848/1&dl=b) or this (https://www.amazon.com/HAZARD-Stick-up-Hook-Fastener-Universal-Holster-x/dp/B07CQGKQMH)... If your pack doesn't already have velcro, you can have it sewn in...

An Advanced Holster "Snatch N' Grab" may work in your backpack.

I found those about an hour ago while searching and you're right, it may be the ticket. They're also out of stock. DOH! I may email and ask if they have an ETA for back in stock.
This may be a decent alternative until then: https://www.amazon.com/5-11-Tactical-Backpack-Insert-Attachment/dp/B07LBFLPVS

That's why something that will take a holster with full trigger coverage is my preference. Failing that, one of those kydex trigger guard covers would be an option IF there's a good way to secure it to the pack/holster and it's secure enough on the pistol to only come off when drawn. That's not my first choice at all but it is another option.

You're looking for a Spec-Ops Pack-Rat. It easily fits into most backpacks & keeps things tidy.

Hard to argue with that so far! I emailed about noon asking when they'd be back in stock and 15 minutes later he answered saying they were back on the website so now I have one on the way with a couple of PALS clips.

I put one of the Hill People Gear organizer panels (https://hillpeoplegear.com/Products/CategoryID/6) in a day pack I use. Added the "Tactigami" holster and mag carrier from Vertx, and have been very happy with the setup. Still not a quick access option, but certainly more so than a zippered case within a closed pack. You can mount the holster right at the top of the panel, just inside the pack opening. Stays put too. (Note the panels fasten right into the HPG packs. Probably would require some rigging on another brand.)
Maxpedition make some packs with dedicated pistol pouches.

DSG sells holster shells if you want something more rigid than a soft pouch:
https://darkstargear.com/product/attachment-shell/
Maybe attach to a sheet of plastic sized to fit a pack pocket?

Solid dude for sure. Not many guys like him around.

While ours would work I'd personally lean towards something like the Advanced Holster sheet with a tactigami holster or zip tie an old holster to the same sheet.

Maxpedition used to have a Velcro insert that was adjustable at the trigger guard. I use that with a trigger guard cover like a Vanguard etc, lashed to the pack.
A RCS pocketshield could also work well in some compartments based on size or molle availability and that would allow you to used a dedicated kydex holster with it.

Is this for a handgun in a back pack you take in with you most places or to be left unsecured in the truck ?

What about a real holster secured in the pack? Zip ties?

I’ve been using Crossbreed’s “last ditch” for a variety of things lately. Secure fit, solid construction and adaptable to any loop Velcro panel.

If you backpack/hike, here is another option:
The Hillpeoplegear Kit Bag.
https://hillpeoplegear.com/Products/CategoryID/1/ProductID/5
It allows instant access to your blaster, while off body, so you don't have to struggle with your parka to gain access.
I'm wearing the "Recon" model, while out snow shoeing. It was 4 degrees that day, and this allowed me to stay warm while having access.

One of these might help;

Another more DIY option would be a piece of kydex or even 1/8 inch tempered hard board (pegboard w/o the holes), some pop rivets w/ washers and any of a bunch of nylon holsters. Cut the board to match the shape of the backpack so it is well located and then attach the holster at any angle you want.

In general, I don’t like off-body carry, but have experimented with some pack and shoulder bag holsters.
I have a HPG Kit bag for grizzly country. Works great, and has a dedicated separate padded pouch for the gun.
Packs get put in more different positions than bodies usually do, and some of the fabric pouches (eg 5.11) let the gun slip out. A hot Glock bouncing around in your poorly organized bag == no bueno.
I like the Crossbreed Kydex/Velcro holster because it’s moulded for each gun and has good retention. (They came with extra Jesus that I didn’t need, but that’s ok.)
