View Full Version : I didn't win but still had a fun day at the range. Too many firsts of my life.

My range had members event today and first prize was a XDM 45.
As usual, I never win anything, no luck, not even for the small accessories prizes. :(

However, here's the good part.
There were reps from Springfield and Vortex offering free try out sessions.
So I got to try few guns that I never shot before in my life, including rifles.

I never shot 1911 pistol so I tried that first.
I didn't realize that it doesn't have any travel.
I was still pulling the trigger thinking of the take up when it went off. Caught me off guard ;).

Then another first in my life, rifles. Also, another first, any gun with a scope.
First rifle I tried was the Springfield 300 blackout with suppressor with Red dot on the scope.
Great shooting gun. Now, it feels like shooting a gun.

Next was Christensen BA TActical 308 bolt action with green laser (or red). Another first, never shot bolt action before.
This one has great kick but felt good.
It was loud. Everyone in the next lanes looked at me when I shot this.
Now I'm spoiled.

Finally, tried 9mm Ruger PC Carbine.
This one takes regular pistol 9mm cartridges.
At 25 yards, I hit inside the target somewhere. Scope helped.

Oh man, I can feel my pocket burning already. :D :D :D
It's so amazing that I was scared to even touch a handgun few months ago.

Welcome to the club. Be careful - it can become a full blown sickness.

I have said since I got into guns/shooting - take just about anyone, show them how to properly and safely shoot a quality firearm - and see if they are not smiling huge after shooting.

Very nice.

I've been a "firearm enthusiast" for over 20 years. I've yet to develop any sound judgment on what I really need vs what just looks cool. Hope you've got better luck than me with that. It's a fun ride though!

My wife frequently quizzes me over why I "need" things, like magazines, a new plate carrier when my current one is almost never worn, new optics, new suppressor, the 6906 that is calling me from that other thread, and I have the same answer for her each time.

"Because I live in the United States of America, by God, the capitalist in me likes to see newer, better, cooler things come to market, and with discretional funds 'want' is as much of a 'need' as I as I need to explain.*

Which is usually followed by a lot of sucking up about about how well I provide, explanations about why this is newer/cooler/better, that I worked the OT without complaint, and haven't asked for discretionary funds in a while, so that she may provide me with access to those discretionary funds.

Only a few posts ago, Mystery said "just one gun."

Who wants to start taking bets on how long that lasts?

Hehe... don't tempt me. I know you guys are enablers. :D
As much as it was fun, no plan on buying rifles (for now).

I may buy another handgun or two though.
I ordered IWB holster for the M&P compact to see how it works before buying smaller conceal gun if needed.

This is why I told him buying a bigger safe would be a good idea... :p
