I placed two orders totaling 135,000 rounds of ammunition this week. Can't wait to see what the truck driver does this time...

Adding another caliber?

I don't know that I have seen over 100,000 rounds in one place, at one time, in my entire life.

I am now jealous. Thanks:mad:

manufacturer or through a distributor?

What you just ordered in ammo is what the average American spends on a car.

where are you going to put it all? I thought you already had trouble with storing 50,000 rounds or so...

I've got about 500 rounds of 9mm and about 200 rounds of 12 gauge in a variety of different loads... if the burden of all that ammunition is too much responsibility, we can trade stashes. :)

Is it bulk pack or trays? I've ordered 50K a time or two back when I was shooting a lot, and after discovering bulk pack I was able to cut my storage space almost in half.

I ordered my first bulk packed case of 5.56 ammo recently, and I was amazed at how much more convenient it was. Not having to un box ammo before stuffing magazines is a magnificent thing.

Around 3741 lbs depending on cartridge weight.

My calculations are based on the 125gr 9mm loads I'm in the middle of making right now. (finished cartridge weight 192gr)

I buy directly from ATK.

The last time I discussed it, they weren't able to provide this stuff bulk. Plus, having it boxed makes it easier to track how many rounds I'm shooting for my records. It also makes flying much easier.

I'd order ammo for the job at 200,000 rounds of ball and 18,000 rounds of duty 9mm at a time, then there was the .223 and shotgun buck and slug ammo as well.

One day my jerk-off boss/LT was giving me crap because I was taking half the day to get the ammo moved out to our range. We get the ammo drop shipped to the department, but the range is like 20 miles away. He couldn't get why this was taking me all day to get moved, even though I was loading and unloading/stacking all by myself (not a bad Crossfit type workout for the day BTW, when done for speed of each loading/unloading run).

I was on only my third round trip when he got in my ass and was tying to imply that I was pulling a Beetle Bailey to avoid work that day.

I pointed out that I was;

1. By myself
B. Driving a half ton PU truck
3. That there was almost four tons of ammo in that shipment

I then asked him if he could do math.

BTW, standing in one spot to behold four tons of ammo is just plain awesome.

I got a chance to see a .gov agency's ammo "depot" once... it was quite a bit of ammo. Like, think an aisle at Home Depot, floor to ceiling, with everything from .38 spl to 40mm. I wept with joy.

Reminds me of the time I got to see a distributor's warehouse. Whole buildings, stocked from floor to ceiling with crates of combloc surplus AK ammo and cheap Fiocchi ball. Oh, the humanity...

I've got 632lbs of just bullets showing up tomorrow sometime. Which should be about 30,000 147gr bullets. But maybe a few thousand less due to the weight of packaging. Not looking forward to humping them all down the stairs to my basement. But 3300lbs? I'd just park outside for a couple weeks I guess unitl I could move it all.

If you don't have a two wheeled dolly you may want to invest in one, or rent a furniture or safe dolly that's made for going up and down stairs.
I can't wait to find out what the heck you're up to, you've built up a lot of suspense the last few months, and now this :)

I would imagine you'd just need to show that you're a tax paying gun business in order to get distributor status.

Yes? No?

While that is not the exact designation they use, it is not something they normally do. As I've had quite a few folks email or PM me about it, I'll share my general advice for anyone who wants to buy a significant (20k+) volume of ammunition without an inside hook-up at a major manufacturer.

Contact your favorite local gun store. Tell them you're interested in buying x-thousand rounds of ammunition and would like a quote. They'll either:

jump up and down because they'll sell it to you at full retail (you: find another local gun shop); or,
offer you a bulk discount off their regular price; or,
contact their distributor (or the manufacturer) and place the order just for you, possibly getting a much better price for themselves in the process.

#3 is key because the way ammo sales work, big shops and distributors get their price based on annual sales volume. So if you help a shop increase its volume significantly (and for a lot of shops, adding 50k could be a noticeable increase) it might entitle them to rebates, reduced pricing for the rest of the year, etc.

Yes? No?

No. There is a lot more involved in becoming a distributor. I don't buy as a distributor. When I buy, it's more like a police department purchase (though I have to pay F.E.T., obviously).

I recently moved 32,000 rounds of 9mm from my porch to the basement. By hand. It was a good warmup for my WOD.

Slavex

One of my local PDs will often do it the #3 way, by adding their order to a local shops order both groups get a discount. If you shoot with a group of people on a consistent basis getting together to order 50,000 rounds is usually easy to do.

The Department Of Homeland Security Is Buying 450 Million New Bullets
Eloise Lee|March 28, 2012|152,003|291

(U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement)The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office is getting an "indefinite delivery" of an "indefinite quantity" of .40 caliber ammunition from defense contractor ATK.

U.S. agents will receive a maximum of 450 million rounds over five years, according to a press release on the deal.

The high performance HST bullets are designed for law enforcement and ATK says they offer "optimum penetration for terminal performance."

This refers to the the bullet's hollow-point tip that passes through barriers and expands for a bigger impact without the rest of the bullet getting warped out of shape: "this bullet holds its jacket in the toughest conditions."

We've also learned that the Department has an open bid for a stockpile of rifle ammo. Listed on the federal business opportunities network, they're looking for up to 175 million rounds of .223 caliber ammo to be exact. The .223 is almost exactly the same round used by NATO forces, the 5.56 x 45mm.

The deadline for earlier this month was extended because the right contractor just hadn't come along.

Looks like the Department of Homeland Security means business.
