Black holes have been imaged / detected indirectly for quite a while now, but astronomers have finally taken an actual photo of one. From BBC News (https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-47873592):

Astronomers have taken the first ever image of a black hole, which is located in a distant galaxy.

It measures 40 billion km across - three million times the size of the Earth - and has been described by scientists as "a monster".

The black hole is 500 million trillion km away and was photographed by a network of eight telescopes across the world.

Details have been published today in Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Prof Heino Falcke, of Radboud University in the Netherlands, who proposed the experiment, told BBC News that the black hole was found in a galaxy called M87.

"What we see is larger than the size of our entire Solar System," he said.

"It has a mass 6.5 billion times that of the Sun. And it is one of the heaviest black holes that we think exists. It is an absolute monster, the heavyweight champion of black holes in the Universe."

Uh, no. Nothing escapes a black hole. On the other hand, most things seem to escape AOC. ;)

Weird, I have been looking at black holes on the internet for the past 20 years or so...

I enjoyed reading this back-story today. Thought it was worth sharing....

Katie Bouman is the 29-year-old scientist behind first image of black hole (https://www.foxnews.com/science/katie-bouman-29-year-old-scientist-behind-first-real-image-of-black-hole-goes-viral)

In another tweet, the lab added, "Scientist Katie Bouman just posted about the moment when 'the first image I ever made of a black hole' was processed. Just to clarify, this was the first image *ANYONE EVER MADE* of a black hole."

This reminds me of a very old science fiction movie called the Blackhole.... I am pretty sure that is the name. A unique giant spaceship was able to stay close to the blackhole; I do not remember why they wanted to be close to it.

One of the heroes in the movie was a small robot that could shoot really well. I think he used two guns. A bad guy was a large robot that had superior technology.... and it was mean. It was a cool movie for the time period.

I vaguely remember that when the term was being made popular in the West, Russian scientists were amused as the direct translation of black hole into Russian was viewed as a sexual term. Don't know if this is true.

I think nostalgia has colored your memories of this movie. I watched it relatively recently and the ending was terrible.
