Time for me to add some mugshots and crime scene photos of my two miscreants, errr, boys. :D

Beckham is 4.5yrs and Hudson is 3.

We took our kids out for some hiking and fun at Stone Mountain Park yesterday to enjoy a good fall Saturday (missed all the football games, but oh well). They had a great time, and best of all, they were asking to go camping! So I guess we'll be trying to slate in our first camping trip sometime in the next few weeks before it gets to cold for Mommy on an overnight outdoors.

The dudes & I taking a quick break for a photo op.

The dudes, "protecting Mommy" while she made breakfast one day this week when I was away. Love it. As you can probably see, they keep us in stitches with their antics.

Posted this yesterday on Facebook. Saw it this morning and just had to find somewhere else to post it. I've never gotten as teary-eyed explaining something to the boys, as I did when describing, as we stacked lincoln logs, how the good guys kept going back into the burning tower to save as many people as possible. Then my wife mentioned that some people were offended by pictures of the towers, by the museum, etc. I googled a bit and got a little angry. That was a little harder to explain to the boys.

Telling the story, remembering the day. A lot of good people were "last seen in the south tower, climbing the stairs." Sometimes life really is like cops and robbers - clean, simple, black and white, good guys vs bad guys - and the boys had no trouble understanding. But to the grown ups out there, offended by the recollection, by the museum and the retelling of the stories: this is America, and you have a right to be offended by whatever you want. If you start denying this like the holocaust skeptics, though, I'll have a hard time not punching you in the face.

This is Emily, the youngest of our three children. Em is a RN in the Blake 12 ICU at Mass Gen Hospital in Boston.

On April 15, 2013 my wife, Emily and I were on our way home from a trip to visit family on Long Island. Though she had the day off, her cell phone rang and she was told to report to work immediately. It was 3:00 PM when she arrived at the hospital and the Boston Marathon bombing victims were still arriving.

Over the course of the next few weeks, my wife and I watched Emily lose her innocence of having never seen carnage and despair. Emily was assigned to the nursing team tending Marc Fucarile (http://www.boston.com/sports/blogs/obnoxiousbostonfan/2014/04/marc_furcarile_marathon_bombing_anniversary_interv iew.html), who was severely injured when the second bomb detonated under him.

The Boston Athletic Commission, which operates the marathon, donated running spots for the 2014 marathon to the staff of MGH and Emily ran and completed the marathon. For those interested, here are links to interviews of Emily and the five other nurses from the Blake 12 ICU who ran;

http://bostonherald.com/news_opinion/local_coverage/2014/03/nurses_bond_with_bombing_victims_inspires_6_to_run

Marc attended the 2014 marathon and was at the finish line to greet the MGH nurses who had helped him survive his ordeal;

http://www.canonshooter.com/photos2/emilymarc.jpg

Needless to say, we are extremely proud of Emily. As her father, I am still left wondering where these earth angels come from, because the care, dedication and emotional support Em and her fellow nurses gave to the victims is beyond my ability to grasp.

Thanks for looking.

My 3-year-old, a couple of nights ago, helping with the wood prep before fire-side story-time. I like to think I'm pretty laissez-faire with them, but I was more nervous than I want to admit getting far enough from him to take this picture. Maybe that's why the shot is so shaky. His older brother is almost 5 and it'll soon be time to say "yes" when he asks for his own knife...

My 3 year old told me he wanted to go outside and shoot. After spending a frustrating morning with an old Daisy Powerline multi-pump BB/Pellet thing I had laying around, I went to Wal-Mart during his nap and surprised him with a Daisy Buck when he woke up. He was ecstatic and insisted on doing it "all by himself." The plate was at about 10 feet and every hit on paper was a celebration. Of course we're working on muzzle and trigger discipline in addition to the fundamentals of shooting, but taking it at his speed and keeping it fun. Here is a screen shot of a dry fire video I took the other day. My daughter is 4 and loves guns. She had a sig P320 grip module in a sig factory holster, she uses one of my Gcode taco style mag pouch. She will watch me and then it's her turn. She makes me say "shooter ready, stand bye, BEEP". Believe it or not she's pretty good at reloading! So cute to watch. I'll get a video of her practicing soon.

My oldest 2 weeks after his 4th birthday. He said he wanted to go deer hunting with me so I took him along. He acted like a champ, getting up early, the hour drive to the woods, the walk in, the climb up the ladder, and then after 15 minutes of sitting, he started getting bored. I thought that might happen so I brought along a suppressed .22 just in case. Sure enough, the first squirrel that hops across our path and my son whisper/yells: "SHOOT HIM DADDY!" I wasn't mad. The time together was awesome and it gave me a good excuse to break in my new 10/22 takedown.

When my oldest daughter was little, barely old enough to talk, we (me, wife, & daughter) hopped in the car and went for a ride. We were headed down the main drag just outside of our neighborhood.

Out of the blue, our daughter in the child seat in back, said, "Bye, bye pizza. Bye, bye french fries. Bye, bye ice cream." I looked at my wife with the, "boy, that was an odd rambling from a little kid who can barely talk", look. However, I then realized we had just passed - in order - Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and an ice cream store. I came to the conclusion my wife and daughter had become regulars at these establishments.

"Good children get treats" is a phrase often heard here at Rancho Serious.

My granddaughter would probably arm-wrestle an alligator for a chocolate-dipped ice cream cone from Dairy Queen.

Have you ever done a summer hike there? Like June-August?

I love those mountains and I will either hike there or Big Bend this summer.
I've hiked the Guads and Big Bend in all seasons for over 30 years.
The problem with summer hiking in both is there's no reliable water sources and you have to carry all your water.
With clear skies at 5000'-7000'+ elevation, no humidity, steady winds and 95-115 degree temps you need at least one gallon (I prefer 1.25) per person, per day.
We went in early April with very moderate temps (around 70 for a high) and 16# of our 35# pack weight was water for an overnighter and we both had less than a liter when we got back to the truck (and that's using MRE's for food, so all that water was used for drinking).
PM me for more info on some cool day hikes and overnighters in both areas.

The pic shows him with flint/steel and dryer lint. He got the spark to happen a couple times, but never could quite get enough for it to catch. After about 20 min and at my insistence trying to preserve the fun and keep him from getting frustrated we switched to matches and he had it lit on the second match. Pass it on!

I reckon that most any of the infinitely-adjustable nylon belts with no internal stiffener and a belt end keeper instead of velcro could be reduced to the correct size, and any extra length could then be cut off and the end heat sealed.

30 credits further along... all 300-400 level physics/math/stem.... <shudder>

He was a tiny bit crushed to get his first B in the Fall semester. A 400-level Stats class, finished with an 88 overall and couldn't find a way to earn the extra 2 points.

Got involved with a research project this year, as well as some interesting non-egghead extracurriculars. Burned the candle at both ends and the middle. Working a summer internship doing cool science stuff.

1 year to go.... he's hoping to hold on to Summa and finish with dual majors and a minor.

Thanks!... He's worked hard and earned it...

My limited experience with Vet school says it's not an easy slot to get. The limited number of schools are often state sponsored and give preference to residents, as well. A good friend from college had to establish residency and take classes without yet being matriculated, in order to gain entrance into NCSU vet school (granted, this was in the late 80's, so, things may have changed... possibly for the worse)...

More recently, the very-smart daughter of a friend decided to follow a different path after she came to believe that her A-/B+ college grades were not sufficient to get her into Vet school.

Doing summer camps at university was great prep for my youngest. He went back last summer as an RA and had a great time as well... I hope yours has a similar experience. :cool:
