I would rate Jim Wilson as being somewhere above the awe-shucks level.

Having said that, I never liked thumbprint-over-thumbprint for the support hand, with 1911 pistols, or any other auto-pistol. It seemed less steady, for me, than locking the support thumb downward, sixgun-style, or using today’s thumb-forward position.

He makes a good point about the risk of blow-torching one’s thumb. That is a tattoo I would not want to have, on permanent display to the world. I was “blessed” with relatively short thumbs, so only have to worry about J-sized revolvers, and, is one reason I only use standard-pressure ammo in my J-snubs.

A burn, that bled. Not a thumb, but a suport-side finger that got too close, when not using a two-handed grip. Not the shorter index finger, which is a different scar. Look at the darkened area on the middle finger. The scar is a bit diagonal, relative to the finger. (Quickie mobile-phone pic; just snapped.)
