I'm a pistol guy, but I enjoy the other things that go bang too, but I don't have the first clue as to carrying gear for carbines/rifles.
Can anyone point me in a good direction?

I like these (http://www.skdtac.com/Ready-Tactical-Pro-Grade-AR15-Ambi-Speed-Mag-Pouch-p/rdt.115.htm) pouches that Ready Tac makes for SKD.

I like those (http://www.skdtac.com/Ready-Tactical-Pro-Grade-AR15-Ambi-Speed-Mag-Pouch-p/rdt.115.htm) pouches, too. I've never had a problem with the belt paddles vs. the solid loop, but some others have.

For a kydex pouch, I have been doing a T&E for a couple of months on the gear from www.trotac.com and at this point I would reccomend them. Especially the AR mag pouches!

For nylon, I have been running the HSGI taco pouches, I have yet to have issue with any of them.

I have a Defense Solutions Group pouch that is working well. I also ordered a PSS pouch in orange.

The DSG pouch is awesome because it takes 4 days to arrive, it holds the bullets facing backwards, it works equally well for PMAGS, GI mags, and lancer mags, and it's cheap.

Just to give you an idea, these are *some* of the magazine pouches I've tried...

My very great preference, and my often recommended, is the Ready Tactical posted above. I buy mine from SKD as well. I like that they clip on/off the belt rather than thread on, they can be adjusted for retention with a little heat if you want more/less, are ambi/reversible, and are relatively inexpensive. Also, because they are not the pancake/Raven-style you can fit more on your belt in closer proximity to one another. I have never had a problem with them being *too* close.

For MOLLE attachment the HSGI and the ITW also posted above are my preference. Depending on the rig the ITW can be a little tough to get side-by-side but on something curbing like a MOLLE belt they work well. I do NOT like them for a pants belt. They make a version that is allegedly for a pants belt, but like most things designed for one thing and with a stop-gap to make it work some other way, it's less than ideal.

I have some adapter clips to take the HSGI MOLLE attachment and make it work on a 1.75" belt, and they work well. I use these on my US Grunt Gear Contractor Belt that I use (or intend to use) for 3-gun because it means I don't have to thread the pouch on and off.

So if I'm reading this right the "soft" options are better on vests and the "hard" options are better on a belt?

No. MOLLE-attached are better for attaching to MOLLE, 1.5" and1.75" loops are better for attaching to belts.

wow, the apocalypse is in full effect-I can't get anything that is available other than these two options:
http://www.amazon.com/Mako-Polymer-Magazine-Pouch-Magazines/dp/B004O6CBSA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1331567074&sr=8-1 which I don't like, b/c, as you've all said, it is a belt loop style.

And this one: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/564371/blade-tech-injection-molded-single-magazine-pouch-ar-15-tek-lok-polymer-black
which I don't know if it is clip or loop.

My guess is go with the blade tech??

Thanks again for all of your help.

A tec lok is a belt loop that opens and closes.

These are available:

Oops. Didn't see where you said you didn't want belt loop style. Disregard.

RE: SKD Tactical....

If they are out, you can click on the "Don't See The One You Want?" link and leave a request that you be notified when the item is back in stock (used to be a "WTF!?" link...love those guys). Unless you're in a hurry for some reason, the RT ones are worth the wait.

On a vest, not on a belt. I beercan mags from the belt, so those things are too tall for belt use, to me. However, the retention is excellent, without being overly difficult to pull, and you can adjust that somewhat by cutting the KYWIs or even heat-gunning them.

Plus, if you have other brands of soft pouches, as long as the lip is taped, you can often custom-cut KYWIs to fit them and provide passive retention where none existed before. I did this with ATS and Tactical Tailor pouches. Even if a lip isn't taped, a dot of Shoe Goo works wonders to keep the KYWI in place.

This is another possibility for a belt-mounted solution; a bit more involved, but has the advantage of being height-adjustable and usable for either indexing or beer-canning, and you can stuff mags in one-handed:

I sent an email and they haven't responded yet-I really want those, but the class is in 12 days, so I'm concerned if I wait too long I'll be without anything. I got these for now: http://www.kytexgear.com/products-page/rifle-mag-carriers/ar15/ar15-mag-carrier/

They are my pouch of preference. They take any carbine mag in any orientation. You lose a little speed but they are not a 3 gun pouch and should not be treated as such. They are also only the width of the mag. Real estate on the belt line, to me, is a big concern. For this reason I do not like the pancake kydex pouches.

BOM or anyone else, what's the benefit of having the bullets face backwards on your mag pouch?

Some folks like to use the "Beer Can" grip when grabbing the spare mag.

Thanks so much for the esstac info JMS... I.may have to try just the inserts on my existing Bungee pouches. Though the HSGI is looking nice as well.

On another note, are the hsgi pouches low enough to get a good beer can grip? It's sort of tough to tell from the pics on SKD

yes, you can get a beer-can with the HSGI

I use a pair of polymer Safariland pouches on my Tac3Gun belt. I also have a similar BladeTech pouch as a spare if we need more than two magazines on a stage. I also have a 5.11 Bailout bag with three AR pouches on the front. If I need more than that then I pile'em in a Domke F2 camera bag. :)

Yup the universal fit was a big part of the appeal . LM 5 (Galil) mag pouches arent exactly thick on the ground.

Very happy with it.

And now for a completely different tack.....IF you are using 20-round mags (my personal preference) the old nylon compass/field bandage pouches the military used with ALICE gear are really nice. They hold a mag just right, and when you take the mag out the pouch essentially disappears. Collapses completely flat, does not press on the waist, etc. The ALICE clip holds securely while allowing easy on and off.
