I took Ernie’s Tactical Pistol Skills class for the second time this weekend, and finally managed to accomplish something I’d been working on since I took my first official whack at the FAST in March of 2011 with Todd. For me at least, it’s more than just a coin, more than just an accomplishment on a difficult shooting test. I’d like to think that Todd’s in the afterlife and he’s as happy about this as I am.

For the gear nerds, I used a Beretta 92FS from my issued Safariland SLS duty holster. Ammo was the Federal Syntech 115 grain stuff. Times were 4.74 on the first run and 4.95 on the second run.

Thanks! Ernie was pretty excited, it’s always an awesome feeling when an instructor is pleased with his or her student’s performances.

Don’te tell anyone, but the Beretta 92 series is easier to shoot well than a Glock.

Baloney, you need an RMR'ed Glock with $500 worth of upgrades to shoot like that.

Very good shooting.

My experience exactly! My Cen-tac And Elite LTT definitely shoot easier and better in my hands than a Glock. In fact, I prefer them to my DW Valkyrie.

Well done, that reflects a ton of practice and I'm sure it was satisfying for it to pay off like that. I didn't get anywhere near a coin when I took his class in Salt Lake, but it really motivated me to keep working at improving my own pistol skills. Congratulations!

And he forgot to mention that it was raining during his 2 runs. Wish I would of had the wherewithal to pull the phone out and video it. Congratulations again.

PS. He stole a hat from Ernie also. Somebody was en fuego this weekend.

There will be a detailed AAR on this class in the December Rangemaster newsletter.

Executive summary- Ernest is an incredibly talented trainer. If you have to go out of your way to train with him, do so. Caleb is a very talented shooter. He kicked my butt all weekend.

More to follow.

Awesome! I'm glad Ernie is carrying on the FAST coin tradition. I was happy to get down to breaking the 6 second mark consistently before life got busy and my time for shooting dried up. I'd like to eventually get back to it, and take a class with him.

A 92FS and an SLS? Talk about buying skill! Just kidding obviously. Work ethic is the only way to get those results.

Earnest is definitely on my take again class list.

Well the gun’s not entirely stock. I like to think of it as the configuration Beretta should sell them in.

Thanks! It’s a 92FS with a steel trigger, 12 pound Wilson mainspring, 11.5 Wilson recoil spring, steel guide rod, and large magazine release.

But for some reason I’ve kept the stock grips.

You know, it’s funny about the focus thing. My first two attempts for the coin were in 2011 with Todd, and then it wasn’t until last year (2017) that I really started getting serious about it again. Life took a weird detour through a bunch of things I didn’t expect to happen and then all of a sudden it was like “hey you’re a semi-pro shooter again and what’s really surprising is that you enjoy it!”

Life took a weird detour through a bunch of things I didn’t expect to happen and then all of a sudden it was like “hey you’re a semi-pro shooter again and what’s really surprising is that you enjoy it!”Todd and I had talked about doing a Veterans Day give back event here in Hawaii for a couple of years before he passed, and I was hoping to shoot for a coin with him. Unfortunately, the event kept getting put on hold, and we never got the chance to pull it off. I really looked forward to it.

Besides my SSG business, I am involved in another business start up which wholly consumes my time. Priorities have entirely shifted for me, and I don't have any current personal training or shooting goals. No shooting "bucket list" to speak of. However, I always wanted to run this with Todd in a class, and now that he is gone it is the one thing that still sticks out in the back of my mind. Maybe I'll come full circle with it.

What? I was just told by someone on the internets that revolvers and TDA autos have "shit triggers", and they make you shoot bad.
