Since my Youth, i have not bought another .22. The itch has begun, this will be for plinking, some vermin etc.
I stay in an area where the licensing procedure is long, i cannot just swap out barrels etc.
Choice one: CZ 455 synthetic.
Choice two: Ruger 10/22 tactical.

Any input from people who have been through this before.

Both of those are good choices. I have the CZ 455 Tacticool and a friend has the 10/22 Tactical. I did a little bit of trigger tuning to the CZ and he put a Volqartsen kit in his.

At 25 yards, they group nearly the same with a slight edge to the CZ. Due to the clacking sound of the 10/22 bolt , I prefer a bolt action for precision shooting, but I also have a 10/22 Target model and it can be a lot of fun when plinking.

I recently bought a Ruger 22LR Precision Rimfire to use for practice for hunting and long range rifles - most fun in years shooting that Ruger Precision.

Due to the clacking sound of the 10/22 bolt

Check into this option: http://www.coolguyguns.com/KIDD-22LR-Bolt-Buffer_p_12.html

Eliminates bolt slap against the pin, and is really quite when suppressed.

I only own the 10-22, but go CZ if you want to shoot it as-is, Ruger if you can’t leave well enough alone.

I have customized versions of both CZ 452 (predecessor to the 455) and Ruger 10/22. For high volume plinking the 10/22 is more fun. The CZ quickly becomes tedious to load and slow to operate. Conversely, I prefer the CZ for precision work and hunting. Let your use drive your selection.

I realize that you were looking at semi autos, but have you considered the classic Marlin Model 39 lever action?

Few guns are more fun to shoot and even the most "die hard" Tacticool types usually end up spending more time shooting my Marlin Mountie than any of the other .22s when choices are laid out before them. Usually they dismiss it at first, then after a magazine load (15 rounds or so) jacking that lever as quick as they can and walking a soda can across a field and grinning from ear to ear, they usually ask "How Much?". Of course mine are not for sale, as I have minions who will inherit these mini John Wayne machines.

While I have a very nice 10-22, it never gets shot. It even has a beautiful AAA walnut stock, fluted Green Mountain custom barrel, all the custom trimmings. I always grab my Marlin Mountie. The Mountie is simply that much cooler.

The only reason I would choose something else is if I was running a suppressor, and that is due to the nature of tubular magazines, otherwise Marlin Model 39 all the way!

I won a ham once at a shoot using a scoped 10/22 heavy barrel offhand at 25 yards. The target was a bullseye with a one inch orange center dot. A friend won another ham in the iron sight category using an old Marlin 39. I think he and I were the only ones to hit the center dot. Alas, his rifle isn't for sale either.

You know I totally forgot about it but your story reminded me that I went to a Turkey shoot in the early 2000s on a whim, and not really knowing what to expect.

It was primarily a pistol shoot, and I won a turkey with a handgun but they had a side match/rifle category that I did not know about but I had my Mountie with me, as my friends and I were figuring we would shoot some Jacks either on the way to or from the shoot (I can't recall now). Long story short, I won another turkey with that little Marlin Mountie. I totally forgot about that until now.

A second recommendation for the Ruger Precision rimfire.

Best case... get both the 10/22 & the Ruger American bolt gun in .22LR. Same magazines for both guns is a really nice side benefit.

I received an email from Whitakers a few weeks ago. They said that the .17 HMR's were in the states waiting on USCS to clear them. But no word on the .22 LR's yet.

A couple of weeks ago a buddy loaned me his Vudoo rifle to shoot for a few days.

I ran about 500 rounds through it. It's more accurate than my Anschutz. I shot 9

consecutive 50 yard groups that averaged .2" Amazing.

So I did a bit of research on the company. The rifle is designed to resemble the 40X Remington and use

Rem 700 stocks and chassis’ and will take a Remington 700 trigger.

The V-22 is also the only controlled-round-feed .22 LR receiver out there.

Its not a good fit for me but it is a cool 22lr rifle (line).

No love for the Savage Mk.II?

I have a MK. II TR. I would spend a good bit of a day breaking shards of clay pigeons that littered the hillside at my old shooting spot.

I have one of those that I made into a reasonably OK rifle. The process was sufficiently expensive and time consuming that I now strongly prefer rimfire rifles made in the Czech Republic.

For farting around at distance mine has been sufficient for me thus far but I did a fair bit of reading on upgrades. Scope bases, new bottom metal, bedding, even cryo treating the barrel. I've never gotten around to any of it but with the CZ Tacticool and the Ruger Precision Rimfire (neither of which were available when I bought the Savage) I'm wondering if I shouldn't unload it and get something else. I should just build a 10/22.

I have both rifles, several 10/22s and a 455. My take is that the 10/22 needs attention right out of the box. Unless you're looking for a military equivalent trigger, you'll need a trigger job or new trigger. A new barrel, or a set back and rechambering of the original barrel, is all but required. That said, once complete, the 10/22 is a great little rifle.

The CZ 455, on the other hand, is great out of the box. It's much more accurate than the 10/22, and the trigger is quite good.

What this comes down to is whether you want an accuracy piece, or a semi-auto rifle. If you need accuracy, for hunting or precision practice, there's no question, get the CZ. If you want semi-auto plinking, hunting, or carbine practice, get the 10/22.

It sounds like you're outside the US. If so, carefully evaluate your ability to make the mods needed on the 10/22. There are plenty of DIY trigger options, but it might be tougher to get the barrel work or replacement.

This pretty much sums it up. The CZs are great rifles, but obviously not a semi auto. I like plinking with a bolt personally, so they are perfect for me.

My 452 Lux with Tech Sights is my all time favorite rifle.

CZ does make a semi-auto, the 512. It uses the same mags as the 452. Available in a variety of configurations, including chambered for .22WMR.

I own a 455. I’ve had the stock bedded, added a YoDave trigger kit, and have a lilja Barrel for it. With Eley Match, it’s an incredible thing.

If I were to do it over again, I’d buy a 455 again.

Thanks all for the feedback. I have decided to go the bolt action route. While the 10/22 sounds fun, we do not have barrel upgrades here and even spares can be an issue. So it would have to run with stock barrel etc if I went that route. I intend getting a CZ 455 synthetic, cutting it to 16", put a 2-7 scope and suppressor and run it.
