Hope this is in the right place - couldn’t figure out a better spot for it.

I’m looking for a decent (note, not CHEAP) .22 optic. Use will be for as a varmint/plinking rig, if it matters.

Kinda lost, looking at Vortex, Leupold, Nikon, Zeiss, etc.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

CS Tactical Call them or PM them. Calling works best.

What rifle are you using? What distances and will you want a reticle you can range with? Will you want target turrets so you can adjust for distance?

It’s going on a CZ 455.

I’m not sure about ranging, etc. We have pretty thick woods around here, and a long shot on small game would be maybe 50 yards. However, when I’m shooting paper...it might be nice to have target turrets.

A CZ 455 is worthy of a good scope. :) In the last 2 years I have gotten into the long range rimfire game where we shoot out to 200 yards and beyond. Fun.

So with the understanding that the rifle is going to ride in a pickup, and be carried on long hikes, beaten around, etc, what direction should I go in that will maximize my capabilities for future envelope-pushing experiments?

Do a lot of research first and don't be afraid to spend more than you paid for the rifle to get a good scope. I've got a fixed power 20X scope on my main long range rifle. You might want to look at variable power. Low power for offhand hunting shots and higher power for target shooting. If you're hunting in the woods you'll probably want something with good light gathering.

Biggest thing with rimfire is getting the objective set for the distance you use. I like Leupold scopes with adjustable objectives as I have dialed it down to as little twenty-five yards. I have a Leupold Competition 20X on one rifle, a Leupold M8-8X on another, and a Leupold 3-9Xx40 with the power set to 8X and the parallax adjustment set to forty yards on my hunting rifle.

Parallax will be a consideration. Many centerfire scopes are focused at 100 yards. Rimfire scopes need to be set closer, like 50 yards.

I'm not sure there is a do everything scope. Compromises will have to be made. ;)

Here's a couple of places to get info.

edit to add: farscott is saying the same thing.

Do you happen to have some model number handy?

Thanks.

Thanks.

The scopes that I have are all out of production as I like to buy used to save money and Leupold has a lifetime warranty. The model number (SKU) of the replacement for the fixed 4X I use to hunt is 58680. The 8X and 20X scopes have no current representation in production. The SKU for a rimfire 2-7X33 is 174179. The SKU for a 4.5-14x40mm (30mm) Side Focus Option is 170699.

I like (love) Leupold scopes for hunting rifles. I feel they meet the best balance of size, weight, quality, clarity, and cost. I've had everything from a fixed 4X to a 6.5-20 EFR with turrets on rimfires. To me, the 2-7x28 rimfire strikes the best balance for non-bench use. It has a fine duplex reticle, which does a good job of not covering up too much of a squirrel's head or a target. Short, light, good eye relief.

Here's one of mine on a CZ452 I had shortened to 16" and threaded:

I recently mounted a Weaver 3-10x40 with Mildot/Mil turrets on my CZ 452. It's a good crossover hunting/precision trainer setup. Used to be sold as an exclusive through Midway for ~$350 but since it was discontinued you can find new old stock for $200 on Amazon and eBay. $200 for Japanese glass, exposed turrets and a mil/mil setup is a bargain.

For hunting I'd say fixed parallax is fine, and even preferred.

I’ll give you a call soon.

Kinda of limited in my vocal abilities (post-surgery here) so it might be another day or two before I’m able to actually talk on the phone easily.

Nothin’ fancy.

Sig Whiskey 3.

Considering the distances I shoot (long shot on a varmint is 50 yards) I didn’t know that I needed to step up into the higher magnification/price ranges.

Worst case scenario, if it doesn’t work out for what I need, I’ll pull it off and throw it on another project I’m working on...

I have one of these Nikon scopes:

Parallax is set up for .22 rimfire distances.
