View Full Version : What Gun(s) Did You Buy - Or Want To - Simply Because of TV and/or Movies?

I like being dumb with owning stuff in movies. So........I'd get the John Wick package.

If there isn't a "What gun(s) did you buy -- or want to buy -- simply because it was in a movie?" thread on this site, there should be.

Judging from your avatar, you are the man to start it!

1. HK MP5 because of Die Hard (1988).

28794 (http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Die_Hard)

Unfortunately, the 1989 executive action import ban on "assault weapons" put the HK-94 out of reach.

With PTR now making an MP5 clone in the USA, I'm tempted -- even though I have a SIG MPX and the CZ EVO Scorpion is the current internet hotness -- simply because of 1980s nostalgia.

2. HK P30L, because of John Wick (2014).

28795 (http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/John_Wick)

I was already looking at the P30 because (1) a friend of mine had bought one a few years earlier, and (2) it was the then hotness here on Pistol-Forum and Pistol-Training. But after seeing John Wick, I wanted the L version.

I did get a P30LS in a trade a few months later, but ended up eventually trading it for something else. As much as I like the idea of the P30 and P30L, I'm one of those people whose trigger finger gets rubbed raw by it. I'm sure it won't stop me from getting a non-S P30L if I find one at the right price, because of John Wick.

3. I would say that if they ever make an action movie about, based on, or starring Ernest Langdon, I'd want a Beretta PX4 Compact. But I just picked one up this weekend. Since it was because of Mr. Langdon's "The PX4 Compact might be my DA/SA Glock 19 (https://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?16519)" thread here, I suppose that sort-of-counts.

I'm sure there are others I can't think of right now; probably more than I care to admit. If/when I get around to sweeping the cobwebs in my head, I'll post them here.

Beretta 92FS

I’ve seen it in tons of movies and TV shows. I was originally leaning heavily towards possibly getting an M9A1, but the 92FS pleased my less practical side with the non-railed and slanted dust cover. I’ve shot them before and liked them and it took me way too long to acquire my own. Having finally gotten some rounds through it with the D spring installed I think it’ll be something I’ll be shooting regularly. I’m going to find a way to either carry it and/or compete with it.

Full size USP45 because I got a screaming deal on it and because Collateral. Traded it to my buddy for something. Maybe an Enfield.

Para P18*9 because Hitman. Sold it later because I wanted something else.

Traded the same buddy that got my USP an MP5 clone for his Pedersoli .45-120 because Quigley Down Under. He’d bought it for the same reason. Sold off after a poorly timed job change.

Numerous single actions/cap and ball/cartridge conversions because Clint Eastwood movies.

That’s all I can think of/admit to offhand...

I spent a great deal of time deeply considering the merits of the AUG against other competing assault rifles before adding one to the safe based solely on its attributes as a combat firearm.

PPK because of reasons. I got a Makarov because it was cheap and close, and a PPK/S BB gun. Sold the Makarov, still might someday get a PPK.

Beretta 92 because of Lethal Weapon and Die Hard. And the Army. Finally got one. It’s good.

Still want a SAA and a Schofield because of all the Louis L’amour novels and cowboy movies I devoured growing up. Just have a Single Six.

Want a Katana because of reading Shogun and The Highlander movie and TV series. Only have a bokken.

Picked up a USP45 for the same reason. While I really like the gun, it’s too big for my hands to shoot as well as my other more ‘conventional’ guns. I thought about selling it and buying an LEM HK45 so I could have a more practical .45 because I found out .45 is pretty fun to shoot.

Originally wanted to shoot USPSA with it using a IWB from concealment like Vincent but never got around to doing it.

I may or may not have had fun doing mozambiques and supine bill drills with it at times on the range

I bought my first gun in 1972. A Colt Python, knowing nothing about it except that it looked really cool. I felt vindicated the next year when I saw that all the bad cops in Magnum Force ( second Dirty Harry movie) carried one. I still have it. Early lesson - buy a major brand but pick what looks coolest. 😏 Probably why I’ve always resisted Glocks.

Oh, yeah. 4506, because Sonny Crockett. Bought a 4516 instead because I thought I’d be more likely to actually carry it.

I'm sure Diehard played a part in my choosing a Beretta. In sort of a defense, it was that or a S&W 2nd Generation, or the very new Glock.

I am also sure that countless cowboy movies and TV shows in my youth contributed to SA and cap and ball revolvers.

I still want a LAPD Model 14 because Adam-12.

HK MP5 and HK USP because of this game:

I'm probably outing myself as a youngin' a bit here, but most of my "As Seen on TV" purchases were based off of video games rather than movies (movies help, though). I don't think there's much wrong with that; if my experience with teens and early 20-somethings these days says anything, it's that games are likely to end up being the primary way people get the gun bug in the future.

My biggest and most expensive one so far is a 1983 Izhmash AKS-74N kit build I did largely because I spent hundreds upon hundreds of hours using one in the Arsenal mod for STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl during college. The first MGSV trailer helped too.

28811

I've also bought multiple HK/HK-pattern firearms based largely on my fondness for the old Tom Clancy's games, namely Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six 3. So far, I've got a PTR-91 with the wide handguard and navy selector, a USP Tactical (in 9mm for practicality's sake), and I have a Zenith Z-5RS on backorder. If money permitted, I'd absolutely add a Mark 23 to my lineup based on my love for Metal Gear Solid as well.

28812

Interestingly enough, while I've got two P30Ls now, John Wick wasn't the main reason I bought them; I just happened to like them a bit more than the USP ergonomically and preferred the longer barrel model since I intended it to be a postal match gun first and foremost. I've since fallen in love with the platform and may even add a standard P30 at some point down the line as a "suit gun."

My 870 Police Magnum was another "game-inspired" purchase. I figured I needed a shotgun in my lineup of some sort, and the 870MCS was my go-to option in the Battlefield games. The Police Magnum with rifle sights came closest and the local cop shop had a surplus of them, so it was an easy decision. One of these days I'll seek out a proper MCS pump and see if I can actually clone the damn thing since Remington apparently just outright ignores you if you call them as a civilian looking to get MCS parts.

28813

That said, if you want to see the truly weird side of young gun owners, anime will get brought into the equation as well. I now know of at least two (!) people in a chat server I'm in who have bought or are actively seeking out HK USCs/Tommybuilt UMP45 conversions because we all started playing a mobile game called "Girls' Frontline" and their love for UMP45 (https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1673/0883/products/Girls_Frontline_UMP45_Anime_Cosplay_Wig_2_1800x.pn g?v=1499062263) inspired them to pick up a real one. Weird, but hey, whatever works.

I'm juuuust old enough to remember Rainbow Six being the new hotness and remember watching my friends and uncle play Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear, but my parents were so eager to keep me away from guns and violent games that I didn't get to partake until Raven Shield dropped. Clearly, that worked out well.

It's definitely still having an effect as a series, too. My stepbrother (16, I think) had a bit of a fanboy moment when he found out I owned a Scorpion Evo since it's a common sight on a popular character in Rainbow Six Siege.

I liked Rogue Spear better, but these games were amazing. Along with Operation Flashpoint. Not often do I miss being a kid in the 90s and early 2000s, but stuff like this makes me want to go back.

The opening to the original Ghost Recon sort of predicted the 2008 Russian-Georgian war.

Never bought but always wanted was a 4506 because of Det. Tom Ludlow in Street Kings. Also a 5906 in the Ted Blocker holster John Cooper carried on Southland.

I'd say that's a fair assessment. I'm 38 and my nephew in law is quite a bit younger, I think he's 22. He got into airsoft replicas after growing up playing video games, and now he's into the real thing. He's never seen Die Hard, Miami Vice, Magnum PI, or Heat. All movies/shows that heavily influenced my love for guns at an early age.

11.5'' BCM SBR with carrying handle and single heat shield handguard. Similar to the rifles used in the Heist in HEAT.

28814

I didn't go for period correct as far as having an A1 upper, CAR style stock, and A2 grip (I'm just not interested). But, conceptually I really like the idea of a fast handling, light weight SBR, trimmed down, with iron sights (fundamentals/nostalga), and with modern furniture (pistol grip that feels good in my hand, stock, etc.). I also have another SBR (12.5") with an Aimpoint H2, flashlight, etc.

28815

I just really liked that configuration (and I'm a pretty big fan of BCM), but practically speaking I wanted to configure it how I'd actually use the rifle. I really like the thin handguards.

It's a wonderfully handy rifle.

God Bless,

Brandon

I've been a filthy Mac owner since I started college - in large part so I COULDN'T play those games. I knew at the tender age of 17 that if I brought a laptop capable of playing games I actually enjoyed that I would fail out of college. It worked... for better or for worse.

Coming from a child of the 90's and in no particular order:

MP5/MP5SD because of . . . everything.
Beretta 92 because of . . . everything.
Tricked out .38 Super 1911 because of Nash Bridges (http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Nash_Bridges)
Model 10 Snub and 4" Model 15 because of Dragnet (http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Dragnet_(1967)) and Adam-12 (http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Adam-12)
CAR-15s, M16s, and M60s of various configurations from various Vietnam War shows and movies (Tour of Duty, Green Berets, etc.)
Colt Dragoon from True Grit (http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/True_Grit_(1969))
AMC Automag (http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/AMC_Auto_Mag_Pistol) from Sudden Impact and Beverly Hills Cop II
1874 Sharps from Quigley (http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Quigley_Down_Under)

When I put it down in text (and it's by no means an exhaustive list), I realize that my eclectic taste in firearms really stems from a mix of spaghetti westerns, Clint Eastwood/John Wayne movies, TV Land reruns, and 90's block busters. Sounds about right.

If it makes you feel any better, you're not missing much these days. Might be a sign of getting older, but I went from buying 3-4 new games per month in 2012 to maybe 3-4 games a year. There's just not a lot in the way of unique experiences anymore (and those that offer unique experiences take some time to work through), so I find myself replaying older stuff like World in Conflict fairly frequently.

Speaking of, World in Conflict has made me pencil an M16A2 clone into my list on more than one occasion. Then I realize I probably wouldn't shoot it much at all and shelve the idea.

I bought a good tomahawk after the Patriot came out. I wanted a 92 when Lethal Weapon came out but was just fresh out of college then.
The only movie inspired gun I might actually buy someday would be a Quigley style long range Sharps rifle.

I didn't find it all that dramatic. I played a game or two well into the early hours a couple times a week for about six months, then realized it wasn't having a single real-world benefit... and replaced it with gym time. If someone wants to find that out for themselves the hard way, knock yourself out (I don't regret it, the games were fun and the time wasn't long enough to be a truly significant loss).

How the F did I forget a Sharps from Quigley Down Under? That movie totally made me want one of those.

While we're at it, multiple single action revolvers from watching westerns. SAA, Schofield, and a replica of a cartridge converted cap-and-ball revolver. And throw in a coach gun and Winchester '94 to boot. I wasn't into westerns as a kid even though my dad was/is but in my 20's I started getting into them more.

Not a gun, but I'd pay good money for a functional (not a cheap cosplay POS) Master Sword from The Legend Of Zelda. After Skyward Sword, I didn't play anything at all for a few years until Breath Of The Wild came out, which my son and I beat together. Give the Zenith Quest Z-5RS a hard look if you want a reasonably priced MP5 clone. Mine is running great (admittedly, it had a quick trip back to Zenith at their expense which was promptly sorted out, but that only strengthens my recommendation - they'll make it right).

I would say that if they ever make an action movie about, based on, or starring Ernest Langdon, I'd want a Beretta PX4 Compact. But I just picked one up this weekend.

Inception is the Beretta PX4 action movie if you need the excuse.

As a child of the 60s, M1 Garands and 1911s were everywhere. I won't say that their appearance on TV or in movies influenced my purchases, however.

OTOH, the Sharps was definitely purchased because my wife saw Quigley Down Under. Now that she's binge-watching Blue Bloods, I have to wonder what is next. (While wondering why none of those cable rerun channels are running Magnum PI.)

Back when I didn't know jack about squat, I wanted a DE .50 mostly because of the Matrix. In somewhat of a defense, I had no inclination to wear black leather trench coats. I just thought the gun was cool.

I still do, but I have it filed under Cool But Useless.

That's why I don't have one yet.

Want to buy, well back when I was 21 (just prior to Clinton), I wanted to buy a Calico M950. I think the first time I remember it was from I come in peace.

Part of me wanted to buy one of those 22 MP5 clones, as a range toy. (saw a specialized LEO friends actual one once, and knew I didn't have the feed it budget) Didn't like how much of it was plastic and AFAIK, no binary trigger available.
That one is probably influenced in part by TV.
Over the years I have had the opportunity to buy a few "TV/Movie" guns and have passed. (Mac 10, Uzi, SKS)

Some of the guns that have been mentioned, I would only be interested if they are ones from certain friends (PPK, that belongs to a retired LEO friend, revolver that belonged to another LEO I know, etc). Other then that I am more interested in how they handle/shoot for me, and if it is a historic or old army weapon. (only recently bought a Inox prewarning 92 for a good price, then have ordered a LTT 92). I really only paid attention to what specifically the guns were after getting into guns. (example, only noticed the PX4 in Lucy after buying one)

I would be more interested in the bottomless ammo, that never seems to run out, that Hollyweird shows. I think lots of us here, would prefer that and just buy the guns instead.

As a kid, I fell in love with the Python because of Starsky and Hutch. I always thought it would be my first gun. It wasn’t by a long shot, but I did eventually get one. By the time I did get it, I had far more legitimate reasons to own one.

Another foolish purchase was a Walther/GSG/IMI/ect fake Uzi .22lr. Because I'm a child of the early 80's, and that was the SMG.
That the fake clone was typical zinc hot garbage encouraged me to sell it.

But, I'm still up for one of the real ones... and a genuine Ruger sidefolding Mini-14.

I still want a coach gun cause of Big Jake (more now that I’m older) and Valdez is coming, “something for the rabbits “.

Serpico got me interested in hi powers and it was good enough for John Wayne, good enough for me.

It was Bullitt that made me want a takedown Winchester 97 and the mummy that pushed me into a small collection of takedown shotguns.

I thought everyone wanted a m29 cause of Dirty Harry.

Jim Rockford made me want a detective special so did Barney Miller.

How the F did I forget a Sharps from Quigley Down Under? That movie totally made me want one of those.

There was an article in the Blue Press that described Quigley Down Under something to the effect of a western set in Australia starring a Sharps 1874 rifle with Tom Selleck as supporting actor.

I wanted a Mare’s Leg because of Firefly/Serenity. NCIS and Burn Notice make me want a P228.

Most of my other gun desires of media influence were due to video games.

My first firearm purchase ever was a legacy P226 which I bought because of a mod in Arma 2.
Project Reality made me want a Benelli M4.

(Obvious MP5+Beretta 92 wants have already been addressed)

Gadfly nailed my want for a stainless frame/blued slide 1911 better than I ever could have.

BWT nailed the 11.5in Commando from HEAT as well - I *totally* don't own a Colt 6933 upper on a pistol build because of HEAT. Nor did I almost buy an FNC just because of the same movie. Nope!

Mare's leg because of Firefly/Serenity - still want, almost bought a Rossi Mare's leg in .357 but it was just too rough and cheaply made to swipe the card.

AR-180 because of Terminator 1, and an 1887 12 ga because of Terminator 2. Both ended up priced higher than my want is willing to pay. The right deal on a Howa AR-180 would do it for me, though.

I *will* own an AKS-74 with the triangle side folding stock and a PSO-1 scope, with an OD green mag, forearm, and pistol grip, just like the one I used so much in the old "S.T.A.L.K.E.R." PC video game series. But prices are high on such AK's these days. Like einherjarvalk, I spent hundreds of hours playing that game series and various mod packages for it, in much simpler times as a young adult.

I owned an East German Makarov because of that same game. I loved the way it looked and the Cold War feel of it, but the particular example I had shot nice, tight little groups about 12in high and 6in left at 25 yards regardless of the ammo I fed it, and being a military model made sight adjustments basically impossible. So I sold it and doubled my money.

I worked in a shop for a couple years with no interest in any semi-auto rifle other than a .22. I saw Heat and the FAL double tap to the sternum changed my mind. It made me want an AR, not an FAL, but still...

I have wanted a P228 for about 8 years because of the TV show NCIS.

The fact that Pierce Brosnan carried a P99 during his tenure as Bond, James Bond is not why I own a P99 and carry a P99c, but I'm also not even a tiny bit sad about it.

I can definitely get on board with the video game thing, though. I have an unhealthy desire for a Steyr TMP and AUG, an FN P90, and an HK G3SG1 due to being a hardcore Counter-Strike junkie back when the first generation of that game (the one that was a mod for Half-Life 1) was a big deal. Unlikely that I'll ever have any of them, but a guy can dream. :)

I also sought out and bought an old Ithaca 37 Deerslayer Police Special shotgun based on seeing it in so many movies and because it was the classic shotgun of the NYPD ESU, and I am originally from NYC. Mine was built in 1969 and has some police department numbers stenciled on the side and below the ejection port. I hunted it down on Gunbroker and probably paid more than I should have.

I absolutely did not need this since I have a 1983 vintage Remington Wingmaster and a Benelli Super90 and I am not a big shotgun shooter (I don't remember the last time I fired a shotgun--it's gotta be at least 6 years.

Attached is a picture of the Shotgun next to my Remington 870 and a picture of its ejection port:

I may buy, if they ever become available, an Iver Johnson 4 barrel Sharps 22 LR derringer. This is nostalgia for the Yancy Derringer TV show of my youth, where he carried two up his sleeves, two in his vest and one in his hat. I think they were 32s but whatever. Just for grins and not EDC.

TV Westerns of the 1950s that I watched with grandpa, and the six-shooters
therein, had a lot to do with making me a shooter.

Not much with the guns I bought later however.
Movies had even less influence. I buy guns to carry, hunt with, or shoot
in matches. So function means a lot. So does the way they look.

The Browning BAR hunting rifle looks better to me than all the Remington
semi-auto deer rifles ever made.

Beretta 92 was certainly influenced by 80's action movies already mentioned.

If I could justify the cost for something I'd rarely shoot though, it would be a Wildey.

Interestingly enough, the movies never influenced me towards the Beretta 92. In fact, I bought into the fact that the 92 should have never won the contract and the Sig P226 should have been adopted. What a difference 3 decades make.

I was a big 1911 gun, big into USPSA events. When production division was adopted, I had no idea which way to go. I went to my local shop and rental all the popular 9mms at the same time. I wound up shooting the 92 the best, so I ordered an Elite 2 and have been a huge fan ever since.

Thanks for correcting me, funny how that stuck in my mind all these years and it was not even the gun I thought it was! I think the general profile being similar to the 645 is what fooled me.

A couple of weeks ago, I walk into an LGS and spy a minty 6.5 inch S&W Model 29 with an early 70's manufacture date. Hmmmmm…………… I don't have the available cash at the moment, so perhaps a trade is called for. I start thinking about my FAL. I've owned the rifle for nearly twenty years and love it. However, with the days of 1k round cases of surplus ammo for $75 long gone, I don't shoot it as much as I used to. I'm seriously debating the issue on the way home, but in the end I did what I always do. I took the rifle out of the safe and sat down and watched The Wild Geese. I then put the rifle back in the safe and thanked Richard Burton and company for preventing me from being stupid.

Unfortunately, at that time in NJ, there were no model 29's anywhere, and my purchase permit would have expired by the time I would have to order one from Smith.
