"Plays well with centerline knives" has my attention. I haven't been able to find a AIWB mag carrier that works with my Clinch Pick and so I've been carrying my spare mag at the "traditional" behind my support side hip location.

I’ve been running the Koala for about a month now. I’ve used it at work and in the Pistol Intensive Weekend with Paul Sharp and William Aprill. It works for all double stack magazine! Adjust your mag depth then ride depth and rock on. The retention is pretty positive. The mag held tightly them releases with a noticeable drop in tension.

That’s the next step. My plan was to take pics last night for an email campaign using my list and also posting here with some instructions. It’ll be a password protected product for the first week or so. The plan is to sell for around $40 alone and $30 with a holster. We’re gonna offer it at the $30 price for a bit to allow prior customers to get the benefit new customers get but also as an intro sale.

There will also be some “auction” items to settle our rent for the year here. May be another new carrier there...

We've got a new old product that we'd like to release for past customers, friends, and long time followers. If you've kept up you've probably seen a few pouches we've tried, and the Koala is the final configuration, or rather the first. We spend some time trying to get things right for everyone but at the end of the day the long line of holes solves the problems we saw in various prototypes and the first round of testing went over better than we'd ever imagined.

Details... They're gonna be $40 alone and $30 with a holster. That's great if you're a new customer but the long time supporters always get hosed with stuff like this so we're gonna do our best to make sure everyone who's been along for the ride gets the same benefits. The following link is for the pouch on sale at $30. Shipping will be USPS Flat Rate, not an easy way to get around that just yet but we're looking. Colors will still have some upcharge but we work at keeping the most common stuff the same price. The link is password protected (https://darkstargear.com/product/koala/), use marsupial to get in. Everything else is the same as before.

Shipping will be quoted as the same 1-3 weeks as usual. We've got some ready to go and more almost there but it's better to play it safe on timing. If there are any special requirements please let us know. We've always supported those who seek training and will continue to do so.

Not sure it will work better, just that is works as well as we could make it work. For many the handles on their knives can print and some are adding foam. With only a single soft loop in the way, and the other attachments being smaller, this allows the user to put the two items close and use the pouch to help tuck the knife handle.

What's the difference between the metal/plastic magazine retention systems? I haven't carried a mag IWB before so I'm trying to decide whether to try this out with my P30 or Glock. The question about the USP mags is what intrigued me about that difference - USPC mags and USP45 mags are metal if memory serves correctly, but my USP9 mags are plastic.

They're both friction the difference is thickness. There's enough of a range for each to be too tight to too loose but the starting point for both doesn't afford that range to make just one pouch.

Out of curiosity, is there any surefire way to tell the difference between the metal mag and plastic mag versions? I'm 99% sure I figured out which is which, but I'm wondering if there's any sort of proof mark or something I can reference before I just hit them with a paint pen.

There was supposed to be a plaster with “M” in sharpie but I’ve been informed that my packing assistants removed all production remnants, critical marking included.

The Glock mag will feel tighter in the metal pouch and adequate in the plastic one.

The open ends when matched together should also be slightly off, but not much.

Thanks, I had been using "feel" to discern the two. There was a small piece of painter's tape in one but no markings on the tape so I wasn't sure if that was supposed to mean something or not.

That aside, I carried a P30 mag in the one that I believe is for metal mags earlier today. Very comfortable and concealable, so I'm satisified. Would definitely pick one up for the Shield/G43 if you ever made one too - I don't always care spares for my double stacks, but never leave the house without a spare Shield mag.

Do you think the Koala would be able to fit a TQ in it instead of a mag?

orionz06
09-13-2018, 02:22 PM
It'll fit the bungee cord flow reducing thing but not a tourniquet. Most of the soft pouches seem to be preferred for TQ's. If there was enough demand we could consider it but I suspect they'd be too large or have too much overlap with existing products.

I posted this on the CZ P-07 mind blown thread. I really like this design.

That’s a 19 round metal P-09 mag in the Koala pouch. It is riding deep enough to not have an issue with roll-out, with a higher cap spare mag, and is leaving enough magazine exposed for me to get a good grip on the reload. No issue with printing - it seems fairly flat front to rear.

I could see adapting one of these mags for tuckable carry with one of the DCC clips int he future.

Have you improved your time with the new pouch, or just comfort/margin of concealment?

Have you improved your time with the new pouch, or just comfort/margin of concealment?

I’m not sure it is faster per se, but I will say that the adjustability enables me to get just the right amount of magazine sticking up for gripping, while leaving plenty of magazine pouch below the belt preventing roll-out. This is the big design feature that I love. This adresses a a problem I’ve had with other non-adjustable IWB and OWB designs and the higher capacity spare mags that I prefer. The single loop pivots to the natural angle where it sits best - preferable to the fixed cant designs.

The tension and mag height were set perfectly for me out of the box (P-09 19 round metal mag).

This mag pouch most definitely improves my reload reliability, without compromising concealability or comfort.

The proof is in the pudding: with an overly long t-shirt (bad choice of range wear), I shot a 4.80 FAST clean in live fire earlier today, so it sure as hell hasn’t hurt me any. I had 4 other sub 5.0s runs that weren’t clean, like a 4.66 1B/1C and a 4.69 1B. This is about as good as I’ve ever shot it from concealment, but a fair about of that is my improvement in skill level over time. In the past I struggled with gettign sub 5.0s, clean or not.

Now I just need to be able to hit a sus 5.0s FAST consistently, on demand. I can see that in my not-distant future.

Starting playing around with this setup today. I had issues with a fixed soft loop spinning - my fault due to messing around with hardware too much but nonetheless - and had an idea that the tenicor dcc clip would work to keep it in a more fixed position. So far so good.

I got lucky and snagged a purple Koala on Christmas Eve from an FSoT listing. I have been carrying my extra magazine OWB so we'll see how this works out for me.

Just got a Koala in the mail from Tom this afternoon...and while I didn't think I "needed" to buy another magazine pouch, I'm really glad I got it.

It's just a great design, super comfortable, makes carrying a G19 or G17 sized mag as a spare for my G26 a breeze, and doesn't print whatsoever in the location I wear it...all without having to modify the "as received" setup from Tom.

Highly recommended.

It's good to have a friend in Pennsylvania.

Starting playing around with this setup today. I had issues with a fixed soft loop spinning - my fault due to messing around with hardware too much but nonetheless - and had an idea that the tenicor dcc clip would work to keep it in a more fixed position. So far so good.

I need to get a Tenicor DCC clip. The loop isn't working for me. :( I'm going to try a regular DCC clip but I think the Tenicor would be better.

What is it that doesn't work with the loop? (Just curious.)

Being overweight the magazine and Koala roll out and print, a lot. It was comfortable but looked like when I had a colostomy bag. I adjusted the magazine to ride lower and then I couldn't grab it. I tried a Mod 8 DCC and I think it will work better, but with one screw doesn't stay tight; I don't want to loctite it till I know for sure. I have a DCC Mod 4 I'm going to try before I order a Tenicor DCC.
Plus, with the belt I use the Koala feel off twice while using the bathroom. :(

Thanks, Jason, for taking the time to explain the issues. I'll be interested in seeing how it works out for you with the proposed modifications.

Thanks blues; I think I mentioned in another thread, I did end up ordering one.

I had tried a G19 mag in a JM CK mag pouch I had, to see if it might work. The JM came with a plastic clip, so to simulate the Koala, I removed the clip and put a spare PTD loop on, and cranked down on the retention a bit, as the G48 mag I was trying is a little smaller. "For me" it fit fairly well in the triangular shaped area between the center-side of my holster (DSG Hitchhiker) and where my belt (MMT) meets back up with "me". It was a bit odd that I didn't really notice it much.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to trying my Koala when it arrives. Thanks again for the PM.

I decided to mess about based upon the info shared by a couple of our members above...and swapped out Tom's Dark Star Gear PTD loop for a spare Tenicor DCC clip I had removed from my Velo 4 due to fitment issues with the two installed.

(Tom had mentioned to me that he was running his Orion with a G17 with just the one DCC clip, so I figured if the engineer approves it after training with the holster that way, why not?)

Here it is with a G17 magazine installed...which is only 1.25 oz more in weight than a fully loaded G19 mag.

The G19 mag is even stealthier but the 17 doesn't print. The Koala fits right into the inguinal crease making it very comfortable.

The hardware does not scratch or contact the magazine body at all.

I think it would be easier to carry my 26 than an extra magazine. My belt is the issue. I have a Volund G-hook Atlas and my off side is two layers of belt. The DCC doesn't fit over two and I couldn't position it correctly over one belt piece. I tried it just on my jeans but didn't like it. Yesterday I tried a loop of 550 cord(gutted) and that seems to work better but it needs to be longer, so I'll cut the short cord off and try again tomorrow with a longer piece.

So, after spending a bit of time in my computer chair today, as well as driving for a couple hours back and forth to get my 4Runner serviced, I'm not convinced that my application of the Tenicor / DCC clip was an improvement to the original setup as received from Tom, Dark Star Gear.

I think I may swap back and reevaluate for a while.

Just an FYI.

(I still plan to hold on to the DCC clip either for this purpose or for my Velo 4 as appropriate.)

Okay, I'm back to report that the original setup as received from Tom, with PTD loop, is far superior for me. Much more adjustability and comfort.

Don't hate the messenger. ;)

Received my order from Dark Star Gear today with my lefty orange Koala for my Glock 48.

I left it set up pretty much as it arrived. Fit and comfort were good, it just sits there canted inward, bullets pointed centerline exactly as I expected. I may trim the PTD loop upper of extra material but I’ll give it a while first. Need to try some reloads on the timer but the cant is almost the same as I use for my game setup, so that should work. Very happy with this little guy.
