I have shot USPSA in the past and am getting ready to start again. has been about a year since I have shot a match, got married wedding planning all that stuff so now that it is all over I am planning on starting up again.
To be clear I had only shot about 3-4 matches in the past. At that time I was shooting a Sig P320 Full size in Production division shooting Minor power at 9mm.
this past year I got my first 1911 as a birthday gift from a friend. it is a Kimber Custom Tactical II. while doing some looking our local club where I shot at there have been a growing number of Single Stack shooters popping up and it has intrigued me. I love to shoot my 1911 and it has got me interested in shooting the Single Stack division.
my question is my Kimber was a gift and isn't something I want to beat up while shooting in competition. Which leaves me to thinking well I need another 1911 (cant have too many right), with that said what 1911 are you all shooting for a single stack division.

I haven't competed since my son was born 5 years ago, but at the time, I was using a modified S70 Colt. It had all the requisite stuff (beavertail, ambi thumb safety, trigger, sights, magwell). On top of that, It had checkering and a KART barrel and bushing.

I'll likely try my hand at carry optics within the next couple of months, mostly to get me out of the dry-fire/indoor-range zone

I have been shooting single stack with my Les Baer Custom Carry. Important thing about shooting single stack is the gun needs to run all the time. Beat up 1911 are fun.... Here is what I shoot. I have an identical back up. The only modification is the sights and a IPSC legal Dawson mag well.

With 1911’s the first question is what is your price range ?

Do you want adjustable sights? Personally I would want adjustable sights for competition,

Foe something ready to go out of the box, Dan Wesson and The STI Trojan are both solid choices. Dawson, the sight people sell STI guns already set up for competition.

If you are wanting a base gun to modify, Colt, particularly the competition model, Springfield and Ruger are good base guns.

I love me some Les Baer but they are creeping up into the Wilson /Nighthawk / Ed Brown price range.

Dan Wesson now holds the value “sweet spot” LB used to hold.

Yes. they are getting up there. However they will run. Ed Brown is a great choice. There are a few people running Springfield with great success. If they run they seem to be pretty reliable. I think good mags make a difference too. Sticking with Wilson ETM or the Tripp Cobra Mags seems the way to go.

Do you want to shoot club matches for fun - or do you intend to get serious about it and start competing at a high level?

If the former - shoot your Kimber a few times and get a feel for it. A few Wilson ETMs or just plain 47Ds, and a good holster is all you need.

If the latter, a Dan Wesson Pointman or STI Trojan and you may consider moving to .40, where you can meet major, but reduce recoil and load and make ready on the same magazine without having to juggle magazines (a really minor issue, honestly). Or even consider going down to 9mm to grain the capacity advantage (10+1, instead of 8+1) and recoil reduction.

I don't beat up my guns in competition. A little holster wear is about it. And the best thing to do with a gift is to show you appreciate it by using it.

I am content in Single Stack Minor with a 9mm SA, also suitable for IDPA ESP. If I were going to get serious about it, I would get a .40 Edge and shoot racegun Limited.

Dan Wesson Specialist. With the rail, it bumps right up against the weight limit (about 42.3oz out of the maximum 43oz), and the heavier the better for competition. It also comes out of the box with a magwell that will work well until you figure out if you want to go with something larger like a dawson or techwell. In my experience, all the Dan Wesson guns come with outstanding triggers that need no extra work as well, and they use 100% forged steel parts in their guns.

I either use my Loaded or MC Operator.

I don't think any of my scores or times would be different if I used a Rock Island or a Les Baer. As long as they work.

Major = SA TRP
Minor = STI Trojan in 9mm

Both should be good to go right out of the box with some decent mags.

For any match other than a Single Stack specific match, you are usually better off shooting minor.

If you reload, .40 gives you the ability to shoot major or minor with the same equipment. If not, 9mm is much cheaper to shoot than .45. Also if you don’t reload, typical .45 ammo will be way hotter than need be to make major.

I have all three calibers, and hardly shoot the .45s anymore.

If you want an entry level gun that will at least make you competitive out of the box, I would suggest STI or a Dawson Competition Ready gun (Springfield 1911 or STI). Some of the suggestions made here are actually not legal in USPSA SS division due to weight restrictions (43oz). You could also get an STI or Springfield and send it to a COMPETENT gunsmith and have them make it extremely competitive. Many guns will probably require gunsmith attention right out of the box if you try to save on price (Colt, Sig, Armscor, RI, Kimber, etc).
