Is there a book for the layman on tactical combat casualty care? I went through TCCC a couple of times, but it's been more than seven years. I'm looking for a book as a refresher. Amazon seems to only turn up scans of Army manuals (even with those I have a hard time figuring out what is what*.)

Normally an Army FM is not my preferred reader on a subject (for example, I'd take Cody Lundin's 98.6 Degrees for survival over FM 21-76, and various books on long range shooting over the Army's Sniper FM), but maybe in this case the military manuals are the best available?

*Two military manuals that seem to be the best choices I can find.

Is there anything better? Thanks.

It’s been a while since I took PHTLS. Not sure if it’s what you’re looking for.

I should said I was looking for something more readable than a textbook or field manual. I know it’s first aid and I’m not expecting a page-turner, but is there something a little more practical that’s written for the average person and not for 68Ws and aspiring paramedics?

Thanks.

There’s an app you can download called, “Deployed Medical.”

It has text and videos on all things TCCC. It’s not written at a high level. There are scholarly articles with citations for every topic that explain the nuts and bolts, “why,” but most of that can be effectively ignored for laypeople (the journals, not the, “why”).

That's the one I downloaded. Pretty sure that's the one he was referring to.

Good thread.

I need to get a TCCC-based refresher training course in my plan for 2019.

Rich...I don’t know where your travels are taking you, but I’m teaching medical classes in Memphis (in two weeks) and with Chief Lee Weems next month in Watkinsville GA. And of course at Tom Givens’ PACNW Tactical Conference, at the end of the month.

Thank you sir. I will look at my work schedule (I went back to work in March for an Aerospace Company in Tampa) and definitely keep these in mind.

By chance will you be at TacCon '19 in New Orleans? I am registered, but am looking for another training opportunity in 2019. In the latter part of 2018 I am attending Mr_White 's class in Lakeland FL end of Sep.

I will be AT TacCon ‘19, although I’m not sure if I’m teaching there yet, although I might very well be. Either or, expect to see my class going (further) nationwide. I love to travel, especially to small-town-USA, and since my class is short (4 hours) and inexpensive ($50) the barriers to participation are low. If you keep an eye on my website, I’ll always have direct links there for where I’ll be next.

Another potential option for those looking to maintain perishable skills. This time it's a DVD.

Make Ready with Doc Spears: Combat Lifesaver

(All of the one-star reviews are from buyers that got a mislabeled DVD. I would hope the shipper/seller has corrected that by now. But it's Panteao so who knows.)

That's definitely an option.

My thoughts are (from the standpoint of 30+ years in Instructional Systems Design) that TCCC is much much better as a "hands on" training event. Short of dressing actual wounds, having to fumble around in a classroom being watched by your peers and a knowledgeable instructor, trying to put on a TQ is the best reinforcement of these psyco-motor skills.

I certainly think a DVD or online is great for knowledge transfer, or refresher training, but I think the skill set here is better matched for a actual no kidding course.

Thanks for the link though that is useful.
