I have a nephew that I want to send to one of those emergency/defensive driving programs where they go way beyond the basic driver ed stuff and teach them advanced skills for accident avoidance, skid control, etc.

There was one in ATL I sent my niece to about 10-12 years ago that was pretty good, two full days long, taught at Road Atlanta, but it appears that outfit is gone.

Any recommendations for good driving schools that have such a program is much appreciated. My nephew lives in Louisville, so something in the Midwest or Southeast or even the Eastern seaboard states would be our most likely choice.

thanks

Something like this? I only know them from their advertising and them being on one of the morning radio shows. But Louisville isn't terribly far from here.

The BMW CCA Foundation and Tire Rack support the Street Survival driving program for young and new drivers. Highly recommended!

After that, get involved with the BMW CCA driving school program. I teach with that, and I thinks the skills you learn in a high performance school environment on the track are indispensable. Go do it. Lots of fun, first hit of crack is free. . .

Atlanta Motorsports Park, in Dawsonville, Georgia, offers a one day class. BMW supplies the cars and they have a nice skid pad/hill. I think it is a good first step to introducing new drivers to defensive driving . My kid definitely benefitted from it, and it made for a smooth transition to later, higher level classes.

I sent my son to this during his college years. It literally saved his life in a subsequent MVA where he was able to regain control before probably running off a wooded country road. Worth every penny.

My recommendation is neither local nor inexpensive, but it is very good: https://bondurant.com/advanced-teen-driving/

this is great advice. i started driving with BMW CCA about 12 years ago, and between them and Porsche's PCA program, the on track learning and experience are invaluable. However, its important to recognize that these are perishable skills, so attending a car control clinic once is not going to have a very long lasting effect, but it just might, get your nephew hooked so as to get him into the sport and begin developing excellent driving skills.

^^^^^ This. Yes, get out there. Repeat as necessary. Lots of fun, good group of people. The skill you learn regarding vision, chassis balance and car control are invaluable.
