SGT Baker was murdered answering a routine type call of a suspicious vehicle.
Everyone keep your heads on a swivel, train and be prepared for the worst at all times.
Both suspects are in custody.
We are diminished with the loss of SGT Baker.

Based upon a few things I've heard regarding the circumstances of the murder, all I'll say is that I think the DA's decision to seek the death penalty at this early juncture was very appropriate.

RIP to Sergeant Baker.

Yep. I won’t go into details not released to the media, but the whole thing is tragic and terrible. Undoubtedly deserving of the death penalty.

This is local to me. I hope they dust off the chair for this scumbag.

This is the second LEO we’ve had killed here in Middle Tennessee/Kentucky line in the past 90 days.

Stay frosty out there, Brothers and Sisters. RIP SGT. Baker.

That was a thoughtful article. Minimal details about the criminals, as it should be.

RIP SGT Baker. Godspeed.

RIP. I went to a sniper school they used to put on ten years ago, nice area and pretty rural IIRC. I'm all for the death penalty for any premeditated ambush murder. Cant think of many mitigating for that one.

Some reporting on public court filings:

Sgt. Baker quickly determined the vehicle was stolen and ordered Wiggins and his passenger, Erika Castro-Miles, out of the car.

Wiggins, according to the complaint, claimed his would not open before Baker ordered him out of the passenger side.

According to the body cam recovered from Sgt. Baker, he then walked around the rear of the car to the passenger side, at which time Wiggins initially fired approximately five rounds from a .45 pistol.

Baker was struck by at least one of those rounds and his body cam shows he tired to take cover before he collapsed several yards away.

According to the complaint, while Sgt. Baker was lying wounded on the grounds, Wiggins fired five more rounds, with the last three appearing to have been fired at close range.

An autopsy revealed Baker suffered six gunshot wounds – two to his torso, one to his hand and three to the side of his head.

After the shooting, the complaint also alleges Wiggins moved Baker's patrol car before dragging the shot sergeant over to it.

Wiggins then put Baker's body in the back seat and drove the patrol car a few miles away near the intersection of Bear Creek Valley and Byrd road. There, Wiggins is alleged to have set a fire inside the patrol car and left the scene.

My understanding is the suspect also tried to impersonate the Sgt on the radio and on the Sgt’s cell phone.

We do. The elected DA for that judicial district announced he'd be seeking it for both defendants on June 1. The male was not yet in custody at the time of that announcement.

Some of the statutory aggravating circumstances (at least one is required to be proven for its use in TN) are:
- The defendant was previously convicted of one (1) or more felonies, other than the present charge, whose statutory elements involve the use of violence to the person;
- The murder was committed for the purpose of avoiding, interfering with, or preventing a lawful arrest or prosecution of the defendant or another;
- The murder was committed against any law enforcement officer, corrections official, corrections employee, probation and parole officer, emergency medical or rescue worker, emergency medical technician, paramedic or firefighter, who was engaged in the performance of official duties, and the defendant knew or reasonably should have known that the victim was a law enforcement officer, corrections official, corrections employee, probation and parole officer, emergency medical or rescue worker, emergency medical technician, paramedic or firefighter engaged in the performance of official duties;
- The defendant knowingly mutilated the body of the victim after death;
