What brand of shorts - don't suck don't look goofy, and don't cost $75+ a pair?
I'm 5'7-5'8" so I need/want 7-9" inseam, four pockets (two hip, two back) NO cargo pockets, prefer button flap rear pockets. Quick drying material (it's summer, I get wet), maybe one that doesn't stain easily. Come in grey/charcoal/green, don't weigh a frickin' ton (read I don't need 8-ounce duck canvas shorts), no jorts.
What are you wearing?

Shorts that meet all your criteria except no cargo pockets.
How about "sky's out, thighs out" Patagonia 5" ? Very well made. Great deep pockets.

Get some Dickies, cut them off, and hem them. That was my go to before my EDC expanded and I needed cargo pockets.

When they were on Woot, they were <$20. They're not the fastest drying pair I own, but they do better than expected. I don't remember what kind of closure the back pockets have.
Walmart Faded Glory shorts. no flap, but back pockets button. Not moisture wicking but dry fairly quick. Comfortable. About $7 a pair, come in a few colors. Hard to find in some Walmarts. Doesnt seem like they all carry them.

I’m same height as you and weigh 185. Yeah, I need to lose 20 lbs. I like Eddie Bauer Guide Pro Shorts. Stretchy material, ample pockets....and actually makes my stocky build look kinda slim. And they are often “on sale” for at least 40% off.

I have the last season version of these, and like them a lot (not cheap, but retailer below has a current 20% off single item and free shipping over $50):

Yeah, they have cargo pockets, but they are a very low profile design. One rear zip pocket.

Prana Brion or Zion shorts. Normally $70ish, but I only buy them on sale for $30-40. Very light, stretchy, durable. Brion looks "dressy.". Pants are equally as good.
Another good option is OR Ferrosi shorts. Again, get them on sale or Experticity.

That's how I'd look if I went with the 5" inseam that JHC recommended! That said, Patagonia has some nice selections.
I'm keeping an eye open and will continue to check out suggestions. Because I blew out a less than 1-year old pair of Eddie Bauer Guide Pro's today and had REI dividend money (and it's the annual sale), I picked up a couple of pairs from them. But experience has shown that REI shorts don't last long for me. I just grabbed them as a stop-gap.

I say Ranger Panties for this Amazon review alone:
I am a United states Marine stationed in Cairo, Egypt and let me tell you, these shorts are the best thing to happen to me since the creation of democracy. Nothing screams freedom like your bits and pieces being gently cradled by these justice inducing booty shorts while your downstairs mix-up is thrust into the face of every angry protester and nut job you see as they grimace with jealousy. I especially love to duo these buttocks displaying power pants with a skin tight American flag tank-top. If you love bald eagles, freedom, and flexing your quads at strangers for the simple pleasure of gauging their reaction, then i highly encourage you to hop on the freedom train and purchase these shorts. They do not disappoint.

Carhartt shorts are available just about everywhere, are affordable, and come in a variety of cuts and configurations. I like most of them for what they are. Duluth is another great option, but their prices are high for certain things. I am tall (6' 3") so I have to have an 11" inseam.
I have standardized on once a year buying something from Prometheus Design Werx or TAD Gear. 100% USA made, awesome pocket layout, and top notch quality. Expensive, but most worthwhile things usually are.

I've also been 100% satisfied with Kuhl shorts, I always buy mine during the end of summer sale at "Backcountry Experience, Durango" (http://www.bcexp.com/) when I make my annual camping, 4x4 pilgrimage to Colorado in late August/early September.
Nope, material is too light and the pockets are too tight.
Dang, all the shorts I own have shallow pockets. I haven’t found any suitable for pocket carry that don’t have cargo pockets. I’ll admit I haven’t looked super hard tho.

That’s my night time look. Come on man, you know I can’t wear the Ranger Panties in public here in Chi. I would never make it to my office, because I’d be too busy trying to keep the ladies (and lady-boys) off me.

Outdoor research ferrosi shorts. They are the heat. And not that expensive, especially on experticity or whatever it's called now.

There is a new and used uniform store in my town. Pretty much all the used pants, shorts and shirts are $3.00 each. I got some like new Red Kap shorts today and four work shirts for $15.00 OTD. Not bad as long as you don't mind being Raymundo from FedEx sometimes.

Duluth's firehose shorts have deep pockets suitable for carry. Maybe not lightweight or dry-on-the fly, but they are comfortable here on the coast of south TX. You can choose the inseam as well....at 5'5", i have to have a 7" inseam just to get it above my knee.
Ranger panties.
Never the wrong choice!!!

Yes, they have a cargo pockets, BUT, they are very low profile pockets. You can ignore them.
These are moisture wicking, and 4 way stretch. Most importantly, they are only about $25 a pair. Highly recommend.

So I ordered two pairs of REIs in my normal size and they sucked in terms of fit (rookie mistake buying online). So last night I took them back to my local store and exchanged them for a single pair of Kuhl Radikls. The Kuhls are still a little longer than I would like inseam wise (9"), which for me, hits right at my knee, but in terms of rise, fit, and overall build and comfort they are much better than the REIs and frankly, better than the Eddie Bauer Pro Guides these replaced. I like that the rear belt loop is a wider tunnel. I've already discovered this keeps my belt in place better when carrying a gun (IWB or OWB). Wore them today (~90 degrees, 80% humidity) on a short hike with the dog and wife (~2 mile loop), not chaffing, not too hot, when I splashed water on myself watering the dog, they dried quickly.
So, thumbs up for Kuhl!
I'll be keeping my eye out for sales on Kuhl shorts and I like the pants too (though they too are a bit on the long side for me). Otherwise, I'll say that REI's selection sucked for shorts, the only other bomb-proof pairs they had were North Face canvas shorts that didn't fit me for shit.

I like the Tru-Spec lightweights. Deep front pockets, stretch material in the waist and plenty of room where it's needed:

I'm short-ish, so I'm stuck buying and hemming. +$12/ pair.
I've had good success with Nike Dry-Fit Flex golf shorts. Light material, stretch where it counts and no extra pockets down low, so they are easy to shorten.
My favorite shorts, however, are Volcom. Great fit, slightly heavier material, but still light and quick to dry.

Try these: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Gerry-Men-s-Cargo-Short/450887111
They are usually a couple bucks less expensive at Costco.
They call them cargo shorts, but the pockets are low profile zippered pockets, NOT the bulky external cargo pockets typical of "cargo" shorts.

I will second the recommendation of the Prana Stretch Zion shorts. I have a few pair of these and live in them in the summer time. They were on sale over the weekend for under $50 but I see now they are back up to full price. The stretch zion material these are made of is super durable, stretchy, resist stains, and are quick drying. I don't like cargo shorts but these have a low profile pocket on one leg that is quite useful for car keys, etc. Also, the front pockets are quite deep and leg openings are not overly wide or too narrow. They also have a ventilated gusseted crotch (what's not to like about that!). For a dressier alternative they make the Brion shorts.

I've had great luck with the bass pro world wide sportsman key largo shorts. They're 24.99 a pair and are often on sale cheaper. Fast drying, some stretch in the material. They are a bit shorter on the inseam side of things though. I am 5'9" and they fit a few inches above my knee which is what I prefer. They have one zipper pocket in the back and another pocket on the right that isn't quite a rear pocket that I use for my wallet. This has actually come to be a selling point for me for these shorts because it means I don't sit down on top of my wallet making my hips all wonky. They also have two deep front pockets that can hold many things.
I buy a lot of my clothes from LL Bean.

I bought a pair of Magpul shorts. I like them a lot. Not overly long, medium weight material, little bit of stretch. Not what I would call cheap but priced where I will likely buy more.

I have multiples of these, and sometimes wear them to USPSA matches. In light of SouthNarc’s recent thread, I don’t think the material is ideal for AIWB, although fine for my USPSA rig. I really like Fjallraven shorts, both the Abisko and Greenland models, for OWB and AIWB
BC Clothing Mens Convertible Stretch Cargo Hiking Pants Shorts, Zippered Pockets (X-Large x 32L, Army Green) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C4G3YC8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_aeigBbMEMBPMY
I basically lived in several of these pants for the three years of RV travel. Still have three or four pair.
Super comfortable, zip legs go on and off, belt loops set wide for OWB, stretchy gathers on the waist can help locate AOWB holster, and the belt that comes with is easily removed for a proper 1 1/2” gunbelt.
The generous cargo pockets work well for a IFAK with H&H Mini and a Quickclot, or a Saber Red dispenser, or a TQ.
Bring this back up since I just got some Magpul Reflex shorts. Under 50 bucks to start and I got them for 15% off during the July 4 sale. So far I like them more than my TAD shorts, I just wish they had a front pocket (love putting my phone in there...). The fact that they are sized up for EDC/CC... MONEY.

What's the inseam length? And by "sized up" do they mean, they run large in your standard size? Because I go size 36 as standard which gives me plenty of comfort and IWB room. Do I need to size down to my "actual" size of 34 to get a pair that won't fall off my non-existent bony ass?
