Boston Dynamics CEO Marc Raibert said yesterday that his company plans to begin selling the dog-like SpotMini robot next year, likely to businesses for use as a camera-equipped security guard. But he thinks other applications for the four-legged contraption will be likely developed by other companies, because the robot has a flat platform to allow other equipment with its own computer programming to be easily mounted on top of it. Boston Dynamics already has made 10 SpotMinis with plans to manufacture about 100 more for additional testing this year before going into mass production by the middle of next year, Raibert said. No price has been set for the robot yet, though Raibert said making the latest prototype costs about one-tenth the price of earlier versions.

I watched this episode. The video in the OP above gave me flashbacks to that show.

Awesome. I have a long history with BDI and it makes me happy to see them succeed.

As an engineer, they seem like a really cool company and the kind of place engineers wish they could go be "real" engineers at.

As a person, I'm trying to figure out if greentip is good enough when Chief Beatty sicks the mechanical hounds on me.

I would lean towards 855A1 myself.

My initial reaction to that video says I might do a quick durability test with a 12 lb. sledge if my wife surprised me with that thing trotting through my house.

I'm anxiously awaiting the hillbilly YouTube review of surplus penetrator ammo on a robot dog.

Actually kind of curious... Would steel core x39 or 5.56 be preferred?

The north side is full of bitchin bot companies. BD hit the buyout jackpot with SoftBank, Kiva hit it with Amazon, and I like Clearpath in YYZ as the next big thing. I also really dig the guys at Autostore in Nedre Vats, Norway.

Makes you appreciate God's creatures even more when you realize the amount of data being processed for things that seemingly require little thought! [emoji56]

When they can make me a robot that closely resembles a Kangal and moves like one I'll take it!

Two thoughts:

-So much for OC on dogs.

-When you need this bitch to wake up and fight intruders it will be downloading the newest software and emojis.

Maybe a bucket of paint would f’ up that sensor array briefly.

With that new google tech, this thing could call in a pizza and then go fetch it for you. “Spot, bring me a large pepperoni from Mario’s on 2nd street”.

Then fake a call from a loved one to lure you to a back alley where a pack of them are waiting to kill you.

That would really tick me off.
