Off of the top of my head, I can think of two instances where gun-owner-control measures were put to a popular vote. Both times, our side lost.

Colorado: November 07, 2000

A measure to require background checks at gun shows, to close the mythical "gun show loophole"

yes: 70%
no: 30%

Washington (state): November 04, 2014

A measure to require background checks for all gun sales, including private sales ("universal background checks)

yes: 60%
no: 40%

What other gun-owner-control proposals were decided by a ballot referendum rather than a legislative vote? And what was the result?

Thanks.

Who, besides me, would like to have a way to verify that a buyer is not a criminal before I private-sell them a heater?

I'm certain there's some common ground on background checks.

Nevada did universal background checks, though the Bloomberg-funded grassroots people didn't pay much attention to, like, laws and stuff:

Maine and California had some in 2016. Maine was universal background checks, which failed 51/48. California was background checks for ammo, which passed.

It's a strategy openly advocated for nowadays: https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2018/03/07/gun-control-congress-ballot-initiatives-217239

The WA ballot funding was so unbelievably lopsided, with literally millions coming from just a handful of wealthy donors on the opposition side. The ad buys pretty much snowed the public on that one. The golden rule (gold makes the rules) strikes again. JMO.

Washington State had the extreme risk protection order initiative that passed, as well (2016).
