Nah.

The Skyli... er, GT-R... is one of those cars that throws me into a quandary.

There is no doubt that all the Robby Robot stuff which with they are packed gives them absolutely superlative performance, and then there's the fact that I can take my '98 Zed Drei out, poke the ASC button on the console, and have one of the last driving experiences where everything connecting me to the motor and the pavement is mechanical.

I know the chrondeks don't lie, but there's something to be said for circling an off-ramp at 60 more or less completely out of control that makes it as fun as attacking the same off-ramp at 90 in complete control

Ohhh your so right Tam....in these days of computers that can tell if you changed your shocks from factory kinda robs you of the old time hot rod feel, but then again it's cool crap.

Down right a mother flower of a ride.

It's a cool car.

But why is a 2013 car coming out in early Feb of 2012?

Looks really nice nut I can't help but wonder how much it weighs and how much of the driving experience is lost to the widgets that make that thing feel like it does not weigh 4 tones.

I drove an X6M...which is in roughly the same weight category as a small moon...on a track at speeds which can only be described as ludicrous. When I went into a turn at over 80 MPH by sawing at the wheel using the same level of finesse the Incredible Hulk uses to smash a tank, the magnificent Teutonic engineering kicked in and helped me go around the turn and clip the apex on exit, with just a little wiggle of the tail to gently suggest that perhaps on the next lap I should dial the retard level down a notch. Without the widgets I'm reasonably confident that I would have smashed into a tree and burned to death.

Now I've never driven a GTR, but I have had the chance to drive almost everything in BMW's M line at ridiculous speeds and I have to tell you: I'm a fan of the widgets.

For me they never really interfered with the driving experience...quite the opposite. I started out driving those 70-100,000 dollar cars gingerly....but the widgets gave me such a large margin of error that I realized I'd have to deliberately steer into a tree to crash one, and that enabled me to relax and just have fun. And fun was had. Ridiculous, giggling-like-a-school-girl levels of fun. So much fun that on the worst car I drove (the 650i convertible) I managed to set the brakes on fire. That made the Teutonic nanny unhappy and she threw the car into an error mode. The actual M cars never complained about the lunatic behind the wheel. In M mode they just gently corrected for mistakes and helped me go faster...usually allowing for easily controllable, gentle, tail-out shenanigans.

I did things in those cars I would never dream of attempting in a Viper, because unlike most men I'm not a driving god. On the scale of Ray Charles to Michael Schumaker, I'm somewhere around Mr. Magoo. If I try to push a Viper I'm likely at some point to make a mistake that will result in fiery death. Not on the first lap...perhaps not even on the 50th. But sooner or later. In an M1 or an M3? I'll try to tear the wheels off the thing. Why? Because if I do make a mistake I'll find out about it when the power delivery is limited or the brakes are applied to keep the front and rear wheels where they belong rather than by watching the world suddenly start spinning in front of my eyes and then smashing into something. The nannies...at least on the M cars...don't interfere unless you screw up. If you do screw up, the action of the computer tells you exactly what you were doing wrong in a way where you can actually learn from it and correct it the next time. You can actually process this feedback because your life is not flashing before your eyes at the moment.

I talked with the instructors about the attitude students in the previously run M school displayed about the electronics. Most complained that they would be a lot faster if the "nannies" were turned off completely. It was generally easy to tell when they did segments of instruction without the electronic nannies enabled because at least 2 out of the 6 cars they had on track would come back covered in grass and mud from a particularly horrific spin. One of the last things they do is take you on a lap or two in an M5 with an instructor behind the wheel. I was in the car with a former professional race car driver who was taking the entire track as one continuous drift.

...and at one point, he unintentionally spun the car.***

As we were doing that unexpected 360, I thought "Golly, I hope the girl in the back seat doesn't puke all over me.", but I also noted that if this guy who was far more skilled than I'll ever be driving one of the best handling cars on the planet can manage to make a minor mistake and spin the beast, odds are I need all the help I can get.

So if you took me to VIR and offered me a ride in a GT-R or a 911 GT3-RS, I'd opt for laps in the GT-R in a heartbeat because I'm reasonably sure I could go pretty fast in it without worrying about this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7g9zJ_96cs&feature=player_embedded

Therefore I'd likely have a lot of fun.

For me, at least...fun is the point of a sports car. I have a lot more fun when I'm reasonably certain I won't be voiding my bowels out of fear.

***NOTE: I've also seen Rob Haught short stroke a Remington 870. I've never had the greatest luck, but I'm starting to get the impression that I'm actually some sort of bad luck charm.

I need to drive one in a place where I can take advantage of their widgets. I know they make faster drivers but having been able to drive some cool old little cars the widgets seem to defy logic in some senses.

Perhaps one of these driving schools is in store.

I like driving some of the old iron, too...but it's not so much about speed as it is the experience of driving that car. I'd never try and push a 1966 Corvette or a 1968 Charger to its handling limits.

Goosing it from a red light and rowing through the gears with a Hurst shifter is still lots of fun, though.

I think I agree. I wish I had the skill to push a car as fast as it will go without assists. However, even in my limited crazy driving in my Mustang, I know the tcs has saved my butt more than once. That solid rear axel is a bitch. For a professional driver, assists get in the way. Because I'm not the stig, they will be staying on in my car... Most of the time...

i was hoping from the title this was going to be a GTR thread. the technology in that car is just unbelievable. its nothing i'd ever be able to afford but for its price range it sure competes with cars a lot more expensive. i know everyone brings up the old time muscle. i got to drive a 69 vette, 4spd, no power anything. while that was fun and nostalgic of simpler times i just cant justify that for the cost. the reliability, capabilities, price, and safety of modern cars has just come so far.

Flux capacitor :)
My only fast driving experience was a NASCAR driving deal and a ridealong with a professional driver. I'm not a speed guy, I think I topped out around 160 in the 8 laps that we had, but it was fun. The difference between that and the ridealong speed was readily apparent ;)
So when do we take it for a test drive Skyline?

I hear you JV I was thinking the same thing.

The gentlemen that purchased this one traded in his Z06 for some Godzilla city stomping fun.

One also to look out for is Acura's new attempt at the NSX......we'll see.

I have still heard back channel grumbles that a SER SpecV GTR might make it over here....think 150ish more HP and carbon fiber pannels.

I'm going to go buy more lotto tickets.....I need one.

When the next one comes in I'll call ya Nick.

Which is why low-performance cars can be so much fun. On narrow, tall, hard tires you can have the all the fun of playing at the traction limits, but at speeds that won't kill you if you screw up.

For all the superbad that is the GT-R, right now I have the total hots for a car on the other end of the price scale.

I bought my crappy used '99 Forester from a Toyota dealership, and while the salesman was running around doing all the behind-the-scenes stuff, I was standing on the showroom floor, getting eyeball prints all over the Scion FR-S in a sort of metallic orange that was vaguely reminiscent of the Sunkist hue on a high school friend's '73 240Z.

I. Am. In. Auto lust.

I'm going to start rolling my pennies now so that when these start coming off-lease three years down the road, I'm ready.

Jeremy Clarkson said that they love the FR-S because "it looks like it wants to have naughty fun with your middle bits, and we love that."

I'm forever torn on the car thing - on the one hand, I have a 400+ HP '09 Charger, which with a press of the traction control button becomes an expensive way to convert tire rubber into smoke. It's hilariously fun to drive everywhere but the city; but the problem is that the only places where I can really push it to ludicrous speeds are on race tracks.

This has me looking at smaller, quick cars for every day drivers. My Fozzie is younger than Tam's but it's getting up on 100k pretty soon, and she'll (the Fozzie, not Tam) eventually need to be traded in and complete her life of service somewhere else. To replace her I'm really thinking "another Suby"; I'd KILL to be able to find an 07-08 vintage Forester Sports Turbo, which was basically just a WRX with a slightly lowered Fozzie body, but Subaru only imported like, five of them to the States. C'est la vie.

The fact that so many people are buzzing about that car makes me want to hate it. I don't know why.

I suppose part of it is my dislike for cars that don't have torque. Revving an engine to 8,000 RPM is fun...no question. Especially if it's a BMW V8 in an M3. That's a hoot. But when I'm going from A to B I prefer a car that can move from the stoplight, get up to driving speed and stay there without breaking 2,000 RPM. Having to rev the snot out of it just to make the car move when I'm not trying to have fun annoys me.

I've got a more primitive version of the same flat four mill in a 3300lb truckette. You don't have to rev the whee out of it to keep up with traffic. It's got 2500 cc's divided only four ways; it's practically a tractor motor.
