From the original article (bold added by me):
Like most of my drills, it is meant to be simple and easy to administer. All the shooter needs are his duty or carry setup, ten rounds, and an NRA B-8 repair center (25-yard bullseye) stapled up five yards away.

There are four strings of fire, each with a time limit of 2.5 seconds. (Remember the three-second statistic? We want to be effective within that time.) Scoring is by the rings on the target for the ten shots, equaling a possible 100 points. Hits off of the ten-inch repair center are counted as misses and minus ten each. Late hits are noted and five points are deducted per late shot. A “scratch eight” in 2.49 seconds is preferable to a “ten” over the limit, which nets only five points.

String 1: Draw and fire 1 shot freestyle

String 2: From freestyle ready, fire 4 shots freestyle

String 3: From strong hand only ready, fire 3 shots strong hand only

String 4: From support hand only ready, fire 2 shots support hand only

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Equipment used (pistol, holster, optional concealment garment if one was used)
Number of overtime shots
Total score out of possible 100
Anything you noticed

From the original article:
WHAT’S GOOD?

Like most B-8 centered drills, there are levels of achievement. First, all ten hits within time on the ten-inch paper: respectable, useful, and on the right path.

Next, all within the eight-inch “8” ring with most in the black: solid, and demonstrating all the right stuff. This typically works out to a 90 or above score and is about what I’d look for in a SWAT or instructor-level shooter.

Next is all in the black within time. That is usually a 95 or above and is back-slap worthy on any firing line.

Finally, this drill is 100% max-able. The very best can do it regularly, almost on demand, but it requires that everything is done right. Often the last hit with either of the single-hand strings will frustrate that perfect run.

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

Copied and pasted from my post in the original thread:

I ran this drill eight times this morning using my CZ-75B and 147-grain factory equivalent handloads. I went over time on three of them; the first one I went over on the second and third strings, and then on the fifth and seventh tries on the second string (by .02 and .04 seconds respectively). Uncorrected scores were from 91-98; corrected scores were 83 (first one) to 95 (second one). Oddly enough, I did best with the last (WHO) string.

Additional info: Concealment gament was a buttoned, untucked square-bottomed shirt; holster was a Comp-Tac IWB worn at about 3:30; all strings were shot beginning with the hammer fully down.

I shot it again with my PX4CC. Fail. Overtime shots and hits off the target. :(

I ran this four times today: twice with a G19-5 and twice with my duty G21-3. It was in the 30s and had snowed yesterday so I had to bundle up which slowed my concealed draw.

The two rounds in the 7 ring are both WHO shots. I rushed this string after having come in over par time on the last SHO shot.

Things I noticed: I shoot the G19 better than the G21 in both speed and consistency. I’m collecting data to eventually present a proposal to the firearms instructors and the command staff to transition my agency to 9mm. It’s nice to have an short, fast drill to compare different guns and end up with actual numbers to measure performance.

Also, my WHO shooting needs work.

Overall, I like this drill and put it in the same area as The Test. It’s simple, fast, a good test of fundamentals, and something that can be tracked to notice improvement. Like Justin said, it’s also a good way to compare performance with different guns. Since it’s only 10 rounds, I’ll likely add it to most range sessions.

Tried this drill once before tackling other exercises today and did better than I expected. Left (weak) hand was the worst, with one nicking upper left of the paper (missed seeing it when totaling hits, ergo the "8/10" note), one completely off paper. All times under 2.5, strong hand/weak hand just barely under time.

I'll definitely do this at the beginning of my range sessions for awhile after stepping up my weak-hand dry fire practice.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180303/ec32c86f888537ab06833d91a7a0223f.jpg (The holes in the corners are from staples)

5 yard round up.
Beretta 92A1, JMCK OWB2, Blazer 115gr aluminum. No concealment. 8" circle drawn on paper - didn't have a B8 with me like I thought I did. Ran the drill anyway, w/o point scoring.
Run 1:
1-1.71.
2-9.16. 2 late. Couldn't remember if I was supposed to keep shooting after the par beep, so had a moment of cognitive dysfunction that I had to get through. Then shot the second pair. All in the circle, though!
3-2.73. 1 late
4-1.51-Both shots on 4 were off paper - somewhere.
3 total low left hits on paper, outside the circle.

Said, I can do better than that!
Run 2:
1-1.72
2-2.16
3-2.16 - 2 low left, just outside circle
4-2.03. Low, just off paper

Everything- left hand, draw, front sight tracking - needs work.

Shot it twice from OWB under a jacket.

9mm Operator 97 - 3 nines missed SHO to the left.

G19X 98 - 2 nines due north. One from SHO, one from WHO.

Observation: It strikes me as odd that a test of contextual 3-5 yard fast gunfighting would build the standard on the 10 ring instead of the B8 bull/black.

Hey, I actually just did this.

Gun: Sig P320 X-Five
Holster: Comp-Tac International OWB
Concealment: Yes (vest)

I was well under times for all the strings, ended up throwing 5 rounds into the 9 ring so I ended up 95/100. I'd be curious to see how I'd do using all of the time and getting all of the hits in the 10.

Mixed this in with a longer USPSA practice, haven't been able to get out much in the last 2 months. Target is what we had (forgot the B8s) black is 4.75in in diameter, estimated the scoring rings. Fun drill, I'll bookmark this to shoot again. I never practice shooting from low ready so I was very slow getting up and shooting from there, something new to work on. Very pleased with how my one hand shooting went, changed my technique slightly and the results have been excellent.

I shot this drill today cold to start my range session. VP9SK
Times per string
#1 - under time
#2 - 1.96
#3 - 2.38
#4 - 1.97

Score: 97. Threw the second weak hand only shot (string #4) high as the most egregious miss. Too bad I didn't use the extra half second I had left. I was afraid of going over time after the 2.38 on the string before though.

I shot it several more times after this but did not get a better score because of inconsistent one handed shooting (and shooting too fast)

Shot this today (the 8th... I just got off work, it’s still “today”).

I didn’t keep track of the time on each run, but they were all below Par. String 1 was 1.93 I think.

Shot using a Glock 17.4, with a cut-down beaver tail backstrap and Trijicon HD-XR sights. Holster was an 7TS ALS on a single strap high-ride platform.

The first time I shot this I scored either a 99-3x, or a 100-3x.... not sure if one counts as a line break.

I shot 3 more strings, and got worse each time, with scores in the 92-96 range. Like I mentioned on the 10-8 Dotw, my WHO shooting has gone to crap with the Glock trigger. This drill was obnoxiously eye opening that I need to go back to working on dry-fire SHO/WHO with this gun.

I shot this on Friday with several other p-f members. We shot this as our cold drill/test.

LTT/Robar PX4C Mod 5 from AIWB.

I forgot to count Xs, but my first run was a 98 and the second was a 99.

I think this is a very good evaluation for general CCW skill and it's great for classes with multiple students on the line because it's so easy to administer. (same par for each string and one 10 round magazine).

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180311/99ac316934e5436e77b904ce30da94e5.jpg

Second run 91 (96-5). One shot over time on the two handed string.

I also decided to try the advanced AMRAP version with the 1.5s par time to an 8 inch circle. I scored 7 hits. I got no points on the draw (single hit at 1.52s) and missed 2/3 WHO shots. This was definitely tough. I might try it with a G19 to see how it would compare.

I was right there with you. I ended up with a 91 for my second run which wasn't good enough to snag one of those two spots. I shot way too fast to get the hits I needed and I couldn't find the brake pedal to save my ass. The first run wasn't that bad nerves wise. The second was just nasty.

Shot this again today and did worse than the first time. Oh, and my training partner shot this clean right before I did except he had one shot overtime on the SHO string for a 95 total.

Springfield loaded 1911
Open Carry at 3 o’clock.
1 shot over time during SHO string.
Total 81/100

My cold has turned into a sinus infection. I would love to blame my poor shooting on that but the truth is my SHO and WHO shooting needs a lot of work.

Give me all day and I can shoot with one hand at a slightly better than you suck level. Put a clock on me and my fundamentals break down.

This is a really good diagnostic tool. I will keep using this.

Appreciate you all taking on the drill and sharing your thoughts. Not surprisingly, everyone here is doing really well on the drill. SWAT magazine recently asked me to do some video content and run through the Roundup.

https://www.swatmag.com/video/five-yard-roundup-drill-015661/

Some backstory on the drill: The Max Possible Hits version at 1.5 second par was actually the original 5 Yard Roundup (written up in an article in the 2016 BCM Gunfighter Magazine). However, as good as that version is for really pushing a high level shooter to get more done in less time I found that it was 'too much' for a lot of folks. After trying it with a number of my SOF brothers, one of the service Combat Shooting Teams, a number of instructors, and many regular joes it was clear that many were either not ready to jump to hyperspace or were allowing competitive greed to egg them on way beyond their ability to control the gun in an attempt to max hits.

The scored version at 2.5 second par was the result. It was designed to emphasize control and reward correct execution. The scored version is now the baseline. There probably aren't ten shooters in the country that can ace it on demand with a service/carry gun. (Although most of the top 1% can run 98/99s all day long) It pairs nicely with what is now the 'Advanced' version with Max Poss Hits at 1.5 to work what Brian Enos called 'Abandon' and 'Control'.

The Roundup fits in well as a baseline 'close' drill, a warmup, or a regular skills check. In any of these modes it works well in conjunction with other drills that work other aspects of the handgun.

Shot this last at practice, after below mediocrity on 500 drill. As I was on indoor range, shot in low light w/WML activated for support, primary and freestyle-1 round draw without light. A 94, after slinging (2)7s support hand; others 10s/“X”s.
I’ll do this again, before Easter break, in order, and I think low light again-useful.
Mildly interesting: did the “10in10” from a few weeks ago, full light=94.

Shot w/3 different GLOCKs: Gen5/17, Gen4/19, G43. Safariland GLS holster, unconcealed, on indoor range w/subdued lighting.
Results: 100, no OT(2.27,2.46,2.36,1.87[!]); “X” on the draw, and 3 more “Xs”, freestyle and shooting hand only. WML on last 3 strings.
The 19 and 43 I went overtime with both, but points were 92 and 94 respectively. 43 was out of pocket holster, “Xs” on all draws.
Noted some nerves on the support hand w/17, knowing I had it clean up til then-so that’s useful for focus.
Not terribly surprised by 17 score(but pleased and thankful), as I’ve worked with that particular GLOCK for over 3 months and 2000+ rounds. Will work more with others, as they are capable of 100 points, clean, also.

The drill was shot with a P30 V1 9mm, and the holster used was a Safariland ALS. Overall I was pleased with my performance, except for the one SHO that missed the paper. All shots were within the par time. This is a great drill that I will run on every range trip from now on!

The rings scored 83-1x. 83-1 for the miss =73.

http://blog.krtraining.com/five-yard-roundup-drill/ I thought this write up about the drill from KR was interesting. It was also interesting that even though a lot of us talked big about how easy this drill is in the other thread about it, it was shown among a fantastic group of shooters that it wasn't all that easy to clean with only Mas doing it.

revchuck38

MVS - My guess is that Mas was better able to slow down enough to add more precision. I bet there were a bunch of folks with scores in the high 90s who had enough time for another cup of coffee before the second beep.

Brings to mind the old saying: Hang out with old guys. They know shit.

The 5 Yard at Tac Con was shot on turning targets - pretty quick turning targets and a scoring of "miss" if your shot tore a hole more than 2" due to being late. I wouldn't discount the effect of the turning targets from the standpoint of psychological pressure and the creation of a draconian penalty for a late shot. On the original 5 Yard, a late round was down five points - at Tac Con it was a full 10 point penalty. At least one very good shooter, was late on one shot which meant an 86 instead of a 96.

My best score on the Roundup was a 96. I shot a 94 the first time which I felt was solid work for me. I was also among the group whose 94 meant they went to a second round. IIRC, there were seven of us shooting for the remaining two slots in the final 16. The second time through, I was really feeling the match pressure. I ended up shooting way faster than I should have in order to have the 10's I'd need to be competitive. On every string, I fired my last shot and stared at the still facing bullseye, knowing I should have used that time. I had the time but not the ability to use it. :)

Shot at “high noon”, indoor lit range, Gen4/19, w/Warren/Sevigny night sights, 147 Winchester fmj-“duty practice. GLS holster, unconcealed for draw(1.94-“10”). Good on time on rest of strings, threw a 9 shooting hand only and support hand=98. Shot the support hand in 1.55-obviously should have used the time. I like this drill as a short check, and for aggressive focus.
Had a 2.49/3.35 clean @0745 this AM on the old “3x5 cold”. Shot a 269/300 on the FBI “Instructor Bullseye”. I’m becoming convinced I
Should not try to shoot “slow, precision”; just shoot.

http://blog.krtraining.com/five-yard-roundup-drill/ I thought this write up about the drill from KR was interesting. It was also interesting that even though a lot of us talked big about how easy this drill is in the other thread about it, it was shown among a fantastic group of shooters that it wasn't all that easy to clean with only Mas doing it.

Ohhhh yeah. I didn't clean it (97 and 98) although I "expected" to ;). I posted the observation earlier that the 10 ring seems an exceptionally small target standard for a drill/test intended to emphasize practical life saving skill at the up close range of 5 yards. I didn't say wrong or bad, just an observation.

Squeaked this one in on 4/3-Gen5/17, GLS holster, unconcealed, 147 Rem.jhp “duty” load, lit indoor range.
97 points: 1.90 on the draw w/a”10”; got loose on the shooting hand only w/an 8&9. This one stays in rotation, with variations on light when at indoor range and sequence. Concentrate and focus effort to keep all “in the black”. Thanks to Mr. Dyal and Mr. White for their efforts!
As a side note: 3x5 “cold”, Level 3 holster@0745=2.56,3.39 clean(double clutched the draw).

@ JHC: respectfully curious: is your observation due to a feeling at 5 yards we should be cranking on the speed( as in Repass One Shot
Eval. to a 8x11)?
If one can deliver a hit or hits as fast to a 3.25” area as opposed to a 5.25” area in the same time, is it “better”?

MVS - My guess is that Mas was better able to slow down enough to add more precision. I bet there were a bunch of folks with scores in the high 90s who had enough time for another cup of coffee before the second beep.

Brings to mind the old saying: Hang out with old guys. They know shit.

Rev, if there is anything we old farts are good at, i t's slowing down...:(

More accuracy better in general. I'm thinking at 5 yards the BG is not going to have to much trouble hitting me in the liver either so I better get on it and it makes me wonder if I'd rather not take the extra tenths to sink a 10 at that distance. I think 8" circle is too big as would be 8x11. The grapefruit size sweet spot that DB often refers to is more than a 10 ring. Just ruminations. :D

I sincerely appreciate the reply and see you point. The “8 ball”(actually 9 ring),black, would be a big grapefruit! So, I’m going to go to the “10in10” drill, or consider the last 10 shot string shot on the Super Test: 10 rounds@5yards in 5 seconds. That would seem very proficient; and again, this is all circumstantial. You look at Mr. Rehn’s analysis and that seems sound...
Thanks

I shot some more 95's today, still shooting 'too fast' WHO (average 1.7s), which is an improvement over my typical 91-92 with the occasional/rare 95 from past attempts. Main difference was putting my thumb directly on my middle finger instead of on the grip above my middle finger. More range trips are needed to verify but it sure seems to have brought the groups on average closer to center (vs windage being off, towards my thumb side) To the above discussion, I did a box worth of slightly faster one handed shooting at 5 yards into an IDPA -0 after the roundups for the same reasons as above (and middle finger on thumb still seemed like a winner)

aka the Half Test. I ran that today as well, down to a 3.59 second 98/100 daily best (VP9SK). Love that one. Close, fast, but a tight enough target you (or at least I) still need to watch that front sight

Shot it again today. Took a short lunch so I could leave work early and get in a short range session in. Only had time for one box.

G26, JMCK IWB#3, under an untucked button up.

I forgot my B8 centers. Again.

All shots in Time, 85 points when I laid one over the circle and X I drew.

Steaz:
Sir, I’ve had the privilege and pleasure to attend the Rogers School, which you may know has pretty difficult tests, to include support hand shooting(and reloading). I struggled with support hand shooting until a physician, who was also in class, suggested exactly what you described, thumb down to middle finger. Isolated trigger finger, closed grip. Scores went up from there-so keep at it.
Side note: shot “Super Test” w/89@15, 96@10 and 95@5.
I’ll be shooting the “Roundup” frequently.
