It says it planned the Feb. 28 ceremony months ago, long before the Parkland shooting. Members believe the AR-15 symbolizes the “rod of iron” mentioned in the Bible's apocalyptic book of Revelation.
The “Cosmic True Parents of Heaven, Earth and Humanity Cheon Il Guk Book of Life Registration Blessing” will be held at 10 a.m., according to the church website. “Heterosexual couples” are asked to attend with an AR-15 “or equivalents such as an AK semiautomatic rifle, representing both the intent and the ability to defend one's family, community ...”
With 600 people expected to attend the ceremony, the school district anticipates parking problems and other logistical issues. That, along with “the nature of the event,” prompted the decision, the district said in a letter to parents. Absences will be marked as excused if parents choose to keep their children home Wednesday.
