At some point, two police horses were reported to have been stolen, with one of the horses quickly recovered.

Different strikes for different folks. Some have to for work. I was temporarily assigned there for six months back in the 89-90 timeframe. Personally, one of my most joyous moments was seeing it in my rear view mirror. I'm not a big city guy and never will be.

I don't like it either, but it's one of our few large cities on the East Coast that has 2nd Amendment rights.

Kind of, but I don't think that's by their choice. PA has state level pre-emption, or I think Philly'd be as bad as NYC. If it's any indication I stopped there for a day and a Philly PD cop actually stopped me to measure the pocket knife I was carrying... Could have just been one douche, but it sort of left an impression. By comparison my local pd will thank you for carrying when you inform them during a traffic stop.

There used to be a thing called something like "City of the first class" or something along those lines that Philadelphia, Harrisburg and maybe Pittsburgh used to enforce their own laws but a few years back got shut down by the courts.

I think that every time I drive up to get my daughter. I still can't fathom why in the hell my stupid ex needed to move back to a place where she was nearly murdered and left to die in her own apartment. Great place to raise a freaking kid; I wish I could have full custody based on this stupidity alone but alas, the judge just couldn't see it my way. I am now starting to hear socialist BS be spouted from my daughters mouth, crap like, "how cops need to give people a break." I put her in tears the last time I heard her regurgitate some of that crap and other more troubling comments. Year after year there is an ever growing divide between her and I but there is only so much parenting and correcting I can do in one summer. I feel completely drowned out by the noise she hears day in and day out in that sewer they call a city.

ETA: Back on topic... seriously who the hell steals a horse? I wish being shot for horse thievery was still on the books. It would be one less idiot on the streets.

Agreed, bigtime. The art museum is pretty awesome, but that was the only part of the whole place I liked. The entire time I was there (for about a week, once, maybe 12-ish years ago), I felt unsafe. As I'm sure plenty of people here are aware, constantly feeling like you have to be looking over your shoulder and watching *everything* gets tiring in a hurry.

Whats w all the bashing of my city...

They don't know the town the same way that we and others that live in and around here do. With than being said, things here and certainly in most of the other major cities have made significant advances toward "socialist utopia" status. But...I do fear that Philly is now passed the tipping point with the elections of Kinney as Mayor and now Krasner as DA. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, absent exigent cirsumstances I will no longer go there unless I am on the clock. While there are great things to see, do, and eat in Philly, I can find much of the same out in the counties. Personal choice I know, but one based on experience and occupation. GF is in the same boat and concurs.

Despite all of that, I still believe there are other cities that are further down the hole than the "City of Brotherly (now including equine) Love".

No idea how it is now, but as a kid, the school field-trip to the Franklin Institute was very cool. Seeing real historical stuff like the Liberty Bell, the Betsy Ross house and Independence Hall were also neat. New Hope was... different.

Spent about 10 days in Philly...

The good: I enjoyed my tour of Eastern State Penitentiary. I had at least one decent Cheese steak. I got to see the stupid Rocky Statue. Toured the Mint. Redding Market was nice...
The Bad: Tony Luke's.. worst... cheese steak... ever. Going more than about a half mile in any direction from the Hotel was taking your life into your hands. Walking past the bus station and watching folks cook their shot of H while sitting on the sidewalk.

Overall, not impressed. But more impressed than when I had to cross the river to Camden. Having done time in NYC, Boston, Philly, Chicago, LA, San Fran, and a few other big cities, philly is at the bottom of my "want to return to again" list, with LA a close second. I actually enjoyed Boston the most, followed by (surprisingly) NYC...

Actually Philly is doing better than it was doing some decades back. Yes the population has fallen drastically. Yes the city and its schools are broke and have hopeless pension debts. Yes the mayor is a crazed leftist and the new DA is even further to the left. Yes the taxes and high and the city workforce that is paid with those taxes does very little work.

But it really is better. For example, while the murder rate is high, it is lower than it was in the 1970's and none of the street gangs is known to possess a 20mm anti-tank rifle. (Whereas, back in the day the Diamond Street gang sure enough had one).

And it is safer. In December 1972 I was riding a train from DC to NYC. When we passed through North Philly people said "stay away from the windows." I asked why. The question was answered by some loud thumps as rocks/lumps of concrete hit the roof and windows of the train. Apparently some of the younger residents of North Philly, when not operating anti-tank guns, had created a sport that involved seeing who could do the most damage to passing passenger trains. (Freight trains, by contrast, were treated far more carefully since they were subject to looting--not destruction).

So yes, houses burn on the night before Halloween. And yes, things like Eagles victories are celebrated by stealing police horses and firing shots into the air. And on a warm summer weekend evenings a host of bullet wound victims are taken to emergency rooms. But the trains passing through the city are mostly safe these days.

And you have to admit that it progress!

I had to take that train from NYC down to D.C. to hand carry some evidence to maintain the chain of custody in the early 80's. I don't remember anything out of the ordinary when we passed through Philadelphia. But then I was pretty much used to some of the garden spots in NYC and the boroughs.

I can't think of any big city I'd like to live in these days. A visit, fine. Even a lengthy visit. But a visit it shall remain.

There was incident at a comedy festival in Philly a few years back. Bill Burr (a Boston Comic) went on stage, and the crowd was booing him and throwing shit on stage... rather than running off, he went into an epic 12 minute long rant on how much Philly sucks and how racists and shitty the people are. He would not be booed off stage, so evry now and then, between insults, he would pause and go "10 minutes left", then insult the crowd some more, pause and go "9 minutes left".... not great quality video, but some funny stuff.

I am a rabid Pats fan. My mom's side of the family are all rabid Eagles fans.

I did a lot of lightly inebriated betting (in units of alcohol) on this game with my cousins/uncles/aunts. Needless to say I am now a few cases of beer in the hole

The kicker is, to be honest, I don't even really feel bad for myself. For a Pats fan, I do feel I deserve credit for at least being self aware

So one time--ONE TIME--the Eagles fans get a bit rowdy and throw snowballs (well, ok, ice balls) at Santa Claus. And there had to be fewer than 100 fans throwing the ice balls and only a few thousand cheering it on. Yet what do people remember? 30 years later they are still talking about how the Eagles fans threw snowballs at Santa Claus. And they didn't even bring an anti-tank gun to use on him!

My son was in for a visit this weekend as he had a wedding to go to Saturday night in Philadelphia, my wife and I had a separate wedding Saturday in Philadelphia, and yadda yadda yadda we all went to the Eagles game yesterday. For the second week in a row, Nelson Agholor was a butterfingers, although he was far from the only one. Suffice to say we saw more big dropped balls than a Florida woman at a Louisiana truck stop. https://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?38660-The-camel-did-nothing-wrong&p=933916&viewfull=1#post933916

As much as it gives you a spring in your step when the Eagles win, there’s nothing quite like the genius bitching of Eagles fans on WIP sports talk radio and elsewhere after a loss. I think this may be the greatest example ever.
