View Full Version : 22rd Beretta 92 Mags...

So... I've been goofing off, getting my "Gabe White" on, and shooting Limited Minor from AIWB at USPSA club matches. I've been running 20 rd MecGars, but, having 22+1 to start really simplifies a few things for Limited...

I figured, since the springs and base pads are pretty close, that maybe someone making gear for CZ's has a basepad to bump the capacity to ~22-23.
Well... it turns out that CZ Custom makes a CZ 75 basepad (SKU 10433) (https://czcustom.com/cz-parts-all/base-pads-extensions/mec-gar-base-pads/cz75-nickel-mag-base-pad-black.html) that fits the MecGar Beretta tubes.

I can easily get 22(reloadable) into the mags by just changing the base pads.

Ran the gear in Gabe's class over the weekend and it was reliable for the weekend. (Will keep tabs on that tho)
I've got a magazine gauge somewhere and I suspect it'll fit the 140.25 length restriction.

What is goofy? The angle is just a bit off kilter... Not enough to bother me, really.

Apparently, Taran's CZ +4 based does the same trick on the MecGar 18rd tube, but I haven't tried it. (I also don't like the pin-lock as much as the captured floor-plate design of the MecGar/CZ Custom)

Interesting. What did you use for a spring, if I may ask?

Thanks for the heads up!

Just the stock MecGar spring from the 18 rd tubes. The same spring is in the 20 rd tube and it has enough tension to push rounds up without a hitch. I figured it'd work just fine here.

I'm still miffed that MecGar doesn't sell replacement springs for tubes tho...

Just starting with a 23 round stick opens up possibilities a lot.

Reloading to an 18 round MecGar is just fine... (although these extendos are easy to reload...)

Yeah, that blows, but if they offered 22 round mags instead of just 20s I'd forgive them a little bit.

I like it! I was just at a match today shooting my 9mm 226 in Lim minor. I have been using the 18 round mec gars with the basepad from apex to get me a 23+1 start. They have been absolutely reliable, and look similar to what you have here. Every once in awhile you get an all paper 24 round stage that you can run without a reload.

Would the mecgar CZ springs work? Those are available.

I remembered that I have some old style 20 round extended Mec-Gars and some Pearce +2 extensions from the dark ages. With the extension I got 21 rounds in the mag, but thumbing out cartridges I don't think the spring has enough ass to get the job done.

The stock MecGar 18 rd spring will do it...

It may wear out sooner, but, it'll do it for a while...

Like the CZ mags, the classic Sig Mec-Gar mags are of a very similar shape/design. I believe Wolff has +5% extra power 20 round mag springs (https://www.gunsprings.com/SIG-SAUER%20(SIGARMS)/P226/cID1/mID4/dID254#1048). I wonder if that might do the trick.

I thought about trying one but these mags are similar to Beretta 20s, not the current Mec-Gar 18 or 18+2. I'm sitting home with the flu so I might dick around with various mags, springs, and followers just because, but if the CZ extensions work that's the way to go.

Yeah - using those will knock the capacity from 18rds to 16-17 in the Beretta. Less in the CZ.

MecGar has a nicely tapered spring that "self-compacts" when it gets compressed.

I bet the Taylor Freelance Walther PPQ +6 baseplates would be a perfect fit on the Beretta mags as well.
