Half accidentally some friends and I stumbled into a great way to easily create unpredictable, reactive targets that require visual reassessment between shots. Start with a reasonable sized steel target, like an IPSC B+C, then use strips of multicolored duck tape to create smaller A zones inside it. Try different shapes, try layering the tape, or try taping in different directions and patterns. Layering multiple colors on top of each other can give a visual indicator of progress, whereas layering a single color can leave you wondering how you're doing. One option is to wrap a band of tape around the target, particularly the head. You can also tape index cards or other things to the steel with the duck tape.
The goal becomes to shoot all the tape off. Often one or two solid hits will make the whole thing fly off. Other times it will take up to six shots, maybe more, especially if you stack many layers. A hit on the surrounding steel usually wont make it fly off, but sometimes it will or sometimes it will just help a little. The closer you are to the tape, the more likely the hit will help. Even an edge hit on the tape itself tends to perform less well than a center hit, especially for bands wrapped around the head.
Our steel was pretty cold and the duck tape pretty weak. Who knows how other weather and tape will behave.
