I'm not sure if this would have worked against the Carl's Jr. window smasher we saw recently but it did the job- Intruder shot with rubber buckshot (http://www.kgw.com/news/N-Portland-prowler-shot-with-rubber-bullet-138199519.html)

This happened in the town I live in. The news interview with the rubber buckshot shooter was hilarious. His look and tone of amazement was priceless when he said words to the effect of: 'I couldn't believe it when he wasn't knocked down. He didn't even slow down or react to the rubber shot at all!'
