Been carrying this Benchmade Mini-Griptilian the last two years:

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171130/ed2612eb105d67042205dc3933e44cef.jpg

I received it from LSP552, as a gift. Just sent it to me. In return, I Karma’d out my full size Griptilian to Patroldog.

You might say this knife and LSP’s generosity kicked off the Karma forum.

I converted it to LH use, and wear it clipped strong side. It’s been back to Benchmade once for a sharpening. Otherwise just touched up.

I really like the serrations, and the Mini-Grip seems like the perfect size for my size M hands.

I feel like I should check my man card. After a few year of trying and carrying all sorts of cool knives: fixed blade defensive tools and otherwise, first I dropped the fixed blades for a Delica, then I just gave up on the Delica and went to an old standby Supertinker. Zero defensive uses, but incredibly useful and have pretty much had one in my pocket 30 years.

...don't we already have a pocket knife pic thread....and a fixed blade pic thread....and an edc thread......?

I considered all of that before starting this thread, and this is what I came up with...

- Pocket knives thread is in Edged Weapons, and started for the discussion of folding knives. (not a pic thread in Gallery)
- Fixed blade picture thread excludes anything other than fixed blades.
- There is more to EDC items than folding knives (like hand grenades?), and not all folders are purchased for, or used for, EDC.
- There is no place to share photos of axes. (I can't be the only one who likes them)

I think I said it in another thread: 99% of us, regardless of profession, would more than have our need met by a SAK, Casio G-Shock, and a Honda Accord. But where's the fun in that? [emoji41]
(And yes I have a Victorinox Pioneer in one pocket, and a Spyderco Techno clipped to the other, because cool stuff)

Enel The knives I've used most in my life, and still do to this day, are some kind of SAK. I have a SAK Camper that I bought 26 years ago, still use it. These days, I carry a SAK Alox Cadet daily, and it's generally what I pull out for cutting chores. Everything else I purchase and carry, I do because I get enjoyment from them, not because they do anything the SAK will not (for my uses).

I also have a Condor hawk that I haven't had time to play with and I'd like to try a CRKT, I forget the model name but the one without any poll on the back of the head. The H&B Forge was a slight disappointment as it required some work and fitting like the mass produced one, but much less so than like the Cold Steel. The CS hawks should be considered kits that need a lot of fitting.

Dang it. I should have paid more attention -- the number of screws holding on the scales is a pretty solid giveaway. It pains me (more than it should) to make a mistake due to inattention. :)

I can totally relate. I beat myself up way more than I should about the same.

I just tell myself as long as I'm paying full attention when it really matters, I'm good. :)

Thank you for the kind words, Tony. I'm an enthusiastic amateur when it comes to such things, but thoroughly enjoy it.

The Seiko is new for me. It replaced a Suunto Vector I've had for eight years that I thought had finally given up the ghost (I actually ended up fixing it, bad connection). It's my first automatic, and I dig it. The Seiko SKX is affordable (cheaper than my Vector), but watches can be a very expensive hobby, so I'm trying hard not to dig it too much. :D

I bought mine from Creation Watches out of the Philippines, since I wanted the non-importated Made in Japan model (SKX007J). Very smooth transaction, and quick DHL shipping (free).

Looks sold out, for now. From what I read, they're a reputable dealer that many on watchuseek forums have used. I would buy from them again.

SKX007J - Made in Japan
SKY007K - Made in Malaysia

Not sure it really matters, but I figured what the heck.

Here is a popular US based retailer, who did order and import them, but at a hefty premium. They also have a nice video about the very minor differences.

http://www.creationwatches.com/products/seiko-divers-60/seiko-automatic-divers-skx007-skx007j1-skx007j-200m-made-in-japan-mens-watch-837.html

SKX007J - Made in Japan
SKY007K - Made in Malaysia

Not sure it really matters, but I figured what the heck.

Here is a popular US based retailer, who did order and import them, but at a hefty premium. They also have a nice video about the very minor differences.

Totally agree. Had one, gave it to a good friends nephew who had just been hired on by the local PD. My wife carries the Delica version.

After searching for nearly a year, I recently found a Sebenza born on the same day as my son last year. Was fortunate enough for it to be a LNIB Small Unique "Night Sky" with Mother of Pearl. It's my first small, and I really like it. Son is now 20 months, so the plan is to put two decades of use on it and then give it to him on his 21st birthday wrapped in original box with all CRK goodies and birth card.

Top one looks familiar....

I'm not sure why unless you've seen me post it up here or on bladeforums.

Rob built that knife when my wife and I were up visiting on a motorcycle trip and staying at his home in Clancy, MT back in 2000. I was watching him build the knife in his shop "for a customer" and had no idea it was really a gift he was making for me. (Hence the "blue" bone.)

The model is his "Pikuni". I have the first one he ever made as well. That one is the D2 version shown above, instead of Talonite. He took it off his neck and handed it to me at the Blade Show earlier that same year.

Rob was adopted (for lack of the proper term) into the Pikuni (Blackfeet) tribe some years ago before his untimely death. He was very proud of his relationship to the tribe. I can't tell you how much he is missed.

A lot of Emerson love here. I bought one a few years back. It wasn’t very sharp from the get go, and dulled with very little use. I know it’s just one sample, but still pretty disappointing, especially considering the price.

A couple days ago, I picked up a Gerber 420HC assist. I love everything about it, EXCEPT the safety lock. I don’t understand why assisted knives need a safety. It’s not like an auto, where it can easily and unintentionally activate. It’s like putting a safety on a double action revolver.

While I can't comment on fitment, I will vouch for the quality. Mine has held up well, for about seven years. Leather and stitching are reminiscent of Galco functional quality.

I originally purchased KSF sheath to hold a Maratac AA flashlight and an ESEE Izula II, but didn't carry it much. I trimmed it down to fit an ESEE Candiru, and carried it more with a Alox Cadet, keeping standard SF EB1 in my pocket. Old pics.

Reprofiled this down to 16• per side using my new sharpener. Gave it a true “wicked edge”. It whittles hair and will cut you if you look at it wrong. The factory edge is so awful. I’ve always known it but reprofiling it really revealed it. It was very uneven and had a slight recurve in it that I do not believe is intentional. Much much better now! 22689

I've been carrying it for a few days, and am really liking it. I've been able to add a clip (pictures coming later) to the sheath to add some stability in the pocket. This way, it carries edge rearward. I can draw it either with a traditional tip up, edge out grip with thumb on the jimping, or tip down, edge in with thumb on the pommel for a Pikal style grip.

I like the double jimping. It's very aggressive, and I can see how it might help if the hand slipped down in either style of grip.

There have been some criticisms about the 1/4" thickness. However, as you can see from my picture that only carries up to part of the spine, which tapers down to a more usable thickness. It's not an apple slicer for sure.

I feel low rent posting this in here 😎 but it was a Christmas gift from my oldest friend. He's not a knife guy, but he'd seen another friends Microtech and thought I'd like it (I would have 😀) Once he saw the cost the Kershaw became the budget appropriate option. The funny thing is, without him knowing about it, I've been eyeing the Kershaw as a cheap way to scratch the auto knife itch.
It ain't fancy but I'll always treasure it.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180116/000cf97c41467dc1730ccdd2947634cb.jpg

I have been seriously pondering one of those. It's definitely a fun little knife. Seems well made, the blade fires fast and locks up solid, and it's CPM154 so it's quality steel. If it was about 30% bigger it would be close to perfect, but small knives have their advantages too.

They come in PF colors as well:

:)

Mind-reader! LOL.

I usually buy utility knives in bright orange, and barring that, bright red. I want to be able to see them and avoid mislaying them somewhere. I must have a half-dozen orange Moras.

I was looking at them online and thought, "Hey, that's kind of a cool Pistol Forum color..."

I keep wanting an Emerson but the chisel grind is a big turn off. Thoughts and recommendations to sway me into getting one?

Obligatory picture

As Cid pointed out, some Emerson's come in a primary V grind, but all their knives have a chiseled edge. I've not messed with a full chisel since owning a BM970 (the precursor to the Emerson CQC-7) back in the mid 90's, but I remember it being a pain to cut with, albeit sharp as all get out. All my Emerson's have a primary V grind, including the 7a and 7v in the pics above. If I had my druthers, I'd rather them have V bevels, but I don't notice too much of a difference.

Nice, WB. I used to have a Crawford "Kasper" in raindrop damascus a friend in NY was enamored with, so I let him have it.

(In a good way.)

Crawford keeps on making astounding looking Kaspers and every so often I find myself so sorely tempted. So far, I've not succumbed.

At the time, I found it a bit too large for my tastes.

Maybe today I'd feel different as I often carry a ZT Hinderer 0550 that I was gifted by Thomas Welk of ZT Knives (Kai USA).

As StraitR wrote, even the "V grind" ones are still sharpened on only one side (and the wrong one for a right hander at that). Still, I have a bunch of Emersons and they are all stout work knives; if you don't need to cut precisely along a line for your work, an Emerson will do the job for you quite well.

I carry very often an Emerson Karambit as it covers very nicely, for me, the mix of light work and personal defense. If you want something really cool, find yourself a Persian; you won't regret it.

Btw, StraitR, wasn't it you who got a waved Persian? if so, how did it work out?

I did, but the value of the only custom waved Persian vs how much use I can get out of such a knife, just didn't make sense for me to keep around. I traded it off for another custom Emerson and cash. It went to a very active collector, and I'm happy he has it to share. I have a production Persian for the times I want to carry one.

It actually waved much nicer and safer than I thought it would. Ernie nailed the detent.

Me too, for those who enjoy the wave. It's never really grown on me, mostly because it's hit or miss depending on the pants/shorts I'm wearing. I'm sure a production waved P-Tac would sell like crazy though. There's a Kwaiken production run coming up soon.

The Microtech OTF's are all new to me, and they're an experiment. People say OTF's make terrible EDC blades, so I selected two (one large, one small) with drop point blade profiles to see for myself. So far, I've found them to be extremely convenient to use and the cutting performance of the Combat Troodon is on par with my Large Sebenza 25. The Bounty Hunter model was purchased simply because I randomly found it in-stock after most have been gone for months, and I like Star Wars. :)

YOU named the Kestral, that's amazing! You never cease with the surprises, Blues. Until about six years ago, I didn't know Tony got his start while working for KAC when they were in Vero Beach. Heard he made his first knives after hours, and C. Reed Knight Jr had no interest in making auto knives when approached, so Tony left and started Microtech. That's what I've read anyway.

ETA: Would love to see the other knives, and that cert if it's still floating around. So cool.

If I remember correctly, and I could have something mixed up here, he learned blade making and sharpening from Chris Reeve. (But I'm a bit hazy about the details.)

The letter is somewhere in one of the boxes in the closet...I think I may have posted something about it at bladeforums.com I'll see if I can find it.

I'll try to find (or take some pix) as well.

I own a handful of MT's myself.

I went to visit the facility with Tom Kyle and Jerry Siedlar around this time last year (more or less).

Not only did Tony and company make me feel welcome, but he decided to adopt the name I suggested for a small hawkblade prototype he showed me that day.

That knife? The Kestrel.

As a result, I now own one of the first Kestrel prototypes and a very nice letter from Tony commemorating the naming of the knife.

A nice experience for me. One I won't soon forget.

The mini crooked river is perfect! It's definitely going to be my go to daily task blade. Perfect balance, nice blade length to handle ratio, slim, and light weight. I love it! The bolster and accents make it an aesthetically pleasing blade as well.

The shaman checked some boxes for me but isn't quite what i want for a carry blade, though i do like it. I like the compression lock and the spyder hole is my favorite opening mechanism. It is a bit unbalanced toward the blade as it's a bit hefty on that end. The blade feels wide vs the thin handle but the contoured g10 feels nice and i like the finger choil that lets me choke up on the blade. While not quite a bm adamas, it will be a nice heavier use folder(or something fun to fondle when i feel the need to change it up etc...)

Overall I'm happy with these and really like the crooked river a lot. Solid purchases to replace the 940.

Quick review of my ZT 0620 Emerson. This knife is excellent. The action is super smooth, and the Emerson Wave is the best implementation of this feature I've used. The reason it works so well is that because of the blade shape and pivot location, the moment arm at the wave is longer than other designs. Lockup is tight, and deployment is reliable and easy. There were some reviews out there complaining that the knife was virtually unopenable using the thumb stud. If you press on the locking lever while you try to open the knife, that is probably true. But, if you grab the clip instead, the knife flips open relatively easily.

There are still a few of these out there for around $160... get 'em while you can.

OK, show of hands: Who else finds the second one from the top most intriguing?

Actually, one of my absolute favorites. Clearly made by hand somewhere, there is a "maker's mark" on the left side of the blade that reads, "B.A."X"" there is a third letter, but pitting and time have made it a mystery. The sheath is stamped "R.L.G.", but otherwise that's it. I suspect this knife is of Latin-American origin and was likely used for sugar cane or something of the like. It's of moderate thickness ~1/4" and made from high carbon steel (truck leaf spring?) and was forged by someone who knew what they were doing, but didn't care too much about the appearance, it has tool marks on the pommel and along the spine. The scales are bakelite-type plastic and riveted into place, telling me it was made in the 20th century. And...it's sharp as fuck and balances perfectly. Whoever made it, knew how to make a well balanced, sharp as hell knife, which tells me they knew exactly what they were doing. The grip tape is my addition to keep it from sliding in my sweaty hands.

Honestly, this is really one of my favorite knives. I've thought about getting a newer sheath for it and using it for field carry. But I think I'd be heartbroken to lose it. I really need a good bladesmith to replicate it.

But if you told me I had to grab one knife to go fight zombie hoards with, I'd probably grab this one. Not the biggest, heaviest knife in my collection, but fast in the hand, sharp, and heavy enough to do some real damage.

Hah! For some reason—at least in the late 1980s—Camel cigarettes were very desirable in China. I brought a couple cases and had incredible barter power.

Now, actual live camels? Fucking hate them. Evil worthless pieces of shit. The sound that it makes when you hit a camel with a softball sized rock is awesome. Camel burger is a personal favorite. Not because it tastes especially good but because one less camel in the world is a win.

Man. I actually feel the exact same way about...horses. Camels I don't mind. Sure, they are cantankerous shits, that bite, spit, and piss. But I far prefer them to horses. The thing horses are good for is making hard wearing leather gear.

Mainly carry it at work (pipe fitter in new construction) so I'm used to having tools in my pockets. Manix is great when wearing gloves and able to get a full grip when open. Also I like the clip because it leaves enough of the knife sticking up out of my pocket to grab easily.

Got this guy for $37 at Sportsman’s yesterday. Uses Sandvik instead of the 8Cr13 in the $16-25 variants.

I quite like it, though not the pocket clip.

I also have a large flipper "tanto" version, entirely in Daryl Meier clad damascus from Kit. That one he gave me a huge (unexpected) family discount on for helping man his table at my first Blade Show back in the 90's.

Thanks, brother. I've really shown very few of them since I no longer have an online photo site like I used to have where I had all the images at my fingertips.

It's a pretty eclectic method. Some I carry and use. Some I just admire. Some I sharpen and destroy the pristine value of. It's all good. You can't take 'em with you anyway and no sense getting too worked up about.

Most of the top makers whose work I've had the honor of owning are much happier when they know their work is ending up in a pocket or on the belt.

I try to live similarly. I have my Grandpa’s Colt Python in original bluing and I shoot it a few times a year. I’ve had a few fellow shooters that have freaked out about how it’s close to irreplaceable at this point, but my grandpa would have wanted me enjoying that outstanding trigger. I know because he and my dad both loved to shoot it too!

$92?! Dang. Nice.

The regular Grip is like a G17. The mini Grip is like the G19, to me. Being smaller at 5’5” it fits my hands very well.

My mini Grip was provided to me in a Karma, from LSP552, so I Karma’d my 551 out to someone else.

Still EDC the Mini, albeit the handle is getting a bit worn and the blade shows some use. Still stupid sharp though.

I've got one of these ZT 0456's inbound. (What did you expect from someone with the handle "blues"?)

Seriously, though, the blade shape and steel (CPM 20CV) intrigued me enough to give it a shot. With a half off deal via Experticity, I figured why not? Plus I know someone who will take it off my hands if it doesn't wow me.

Carried and did some light work with it today (cutting boxes and tape) and my impressions were favorable. I’m gonna carry for a few weeks and I’ll report back. My favorite trait so far is the jimping. Excellent on both the frame and blade.

Hey guys...the ZT0456 arrived today...and I really like it. A lot. I thought it might be a tad gussied up for my taste but it's not bad at all. (And I have a bud that will bead blast the color off if I desire.)

Fit and finish are great, edge and bevel more than acceptable, it slices like a demon and feels good in the hand. Bonus is that the piggish weight is only 1/8 oz. more than the ZT0550 I'm carrying around with me most days.

The blade flies out like a rocket.

So, two "blue" knives in a matter of a month or so. This one and the "blurple" Paramilitary 2 in S110V. One hefty. One slim. Both fine.

Here's the pic I ripped off the net again:
