It my fucking house too [emoji3]. That’s why it’s full of sharp stuff and things that go bang.

Then why aren't we following each other on IG? Seriously. It's my only "alternative lifestyle outlet". Since I keep my FB and Twitter free of "behavior question inducing materials". Don't want to wake up the woke, ya' know.

Spyderco Yojimbo 2 (S90V) and trainer w/5x5 Pickpocket waves, set up for support side carry.

So, do you feel like the Yojimbo gives you anything that a P'Kal doesn't? I've often debated picking one up, but can't decide if it does anything a P'Kal doesn't do as well or better.

I'll be back to this thread later this week, when something arrives.

Also newyork - dude what's the story on the wrapped vicious sticker there?

Agreed. We both work in a culturally non permissive environment, so social media can’t include anything outside the liberal orthodoxy.

I like the PKal a lot, but there are a couple things that prevent me from carrying it more. The tip is very close to the end of the handle, and I’ve actually cut my hand a few times by resting it on the closed knife in my pocket. Deployment is great in the upper pocket position but for me, isn’t 100% in the regular position. The Y2 is a great knife. I’ve used the Y2 trainer a lot in the dojo. Now, with the 5x5 wave, it’s exactly what I want for edc in the left pocket.

For jeans, the PKal is still my go to.

I’ve actually had the same issue with the P’kal too. I make sure the pivot is adjusted fairly tight. But I’ve thought of shortening the blade a tad.

This showed up today. A chisel ground Brock Combat Options in 154CM. Lovely blade, with a better back story. This is my knife.

By that I mean ~14-15 years ago, I ordered this knife from Ken Brock. It was just the second custom knife I ever ordered.

Five years ago, I sold this knife. I didn’t want to, but we had just moved, the wife was unemployed at the time, we had to eat. So I sold this knife. I missed it from time to time, but I knew I had done the right thing.

Fast forward five years, we’ve had some good financial and professional success lately. I’m cruising TPI’s for sale forum and spot a chisel ground Brock Combat Options. “Wait...is that MY knife?” I thought. - Yes it was. I bought it back. It arrived today. Polished the edge up on the strop. Fitted a DCC clip to the sheath. Back in business.

Five years since I saw this old friend, but I’m glad it’s back now.

This thread gets pretty good traffic and I didn't want to jam it up with a question about custom leather sheaths. So, if you have any leather worker recommendations and/or warnings please drop your comments in a separate thread found here. Sorry, brother, I missed your question the first time around. Equally comfortable in my hand to the standard grip. (But I am not a student of knife fighting.)

To me it is comfortable in all grips so I think it would lend itself well to a variety of techniques.

My thoughts exactly. I was skeptical because it’s made at Spyderco’s Taiwan factory but the quality is right there with the blades made at the Golden plant. The blade is perfectly centered and razor sharp. The action is butter smooth and man do I love that push button compression lock! I really hope they put it on more of their knives.

One thing worries me tough and it's that button. How easy would it be to unwittingly activate it when holding the knife tightly in a hammer grip or ice pick grip, edge in or edge out?

It's an issue that has been brought up on a couple of knife forums. I haven't followed the discussion however.

Another potential issue, depending on how the knife is used, is having the blade hang up inadvertently due to the design.

It is good looking, in my estimation.

It is very good looking, I agree.

I guess only a hands on examination will tell. When I first saw the Spyderco P'kal in photos, I wondered if, when opening the knife manually, my thumb would end up on the ball bearing lock and unlock the knife easily. Since then, with a lot of hands on use, I have never been able to unlock the knife unless I really meant to and it's become one of my favorite folders.

I'm not sure what you mean by having the blade hang up inadvertently due to the design. Do you mean while using the flipper?

Yeah, I was thinking about that too. The regular compression lock on the Yojimbo hasn't done that when I've used the trainer. Also, the button is another part for sand to get into.

I don't think one can inadvertently unlock one of Spyderco's compression locks, my Yojimbo and PM2 have been bomb proof in that regard.

I hadn't thought about the sand.

No, I mean between the start of the edge and the frame. The design is great for getting the entire edge on a surface or for sharpening, but leaves a potential for it to hang up depending on the material being cut or the care taken. Not a worry for most tasks, I wouldn't think, but something worth noting.

Edge out hammer grip and yes you can hit the button. Edge in, I could not get the button to depress no matter how hard I gripped it.

The side by side pics with the mini-Grip were very helpful, much obliged. And I liked the Spyderco links also. Turns out many years ago I had a Spyderco but I lost track of it so I’m familiar with the brand. Thanks a bunch.

I decided on a plain edge this time. And P-F orange of course. I blame Tom_Jones.

Almost a year in, still carrying this 1 oz knife almost every day. Been on a few business trips, usually clipped to my pocket in the High Bay. Use it frequently.

Thanks to blues and others, I splurged for a Worksharp Field Sharpener. I’ve been practicing, not sure I’m ready to shave with it, but the edge is ok and I seem to be able to maintain it.

I'll usually carry a DF or a SAK to go along with my Clinch Pick. I like something that can just be dropped in a pocket, serve as a money clip, etc.

On the rare occasion I'm only wearing a folder I like something at least Delica size.

This was my first really good folder, bought after I started a thread on here years ago asking for recommendations.
Over time, I added more good quality folders (mostly Spydies), but this old Grip will always e the first.

Like an idiot, I bought a pull through sharpener, it was a Benchmade pull through, and it kinda screwed the edge up. After I bought a Sharpmaker, I tried to rehab the edge, but the stones that came with the Sharpmaker were taking too long for my taste. Finally, I recently got a set of the diamond rods and ultra fine rods for the Sharpmaker. Today, I went to work on the Griptillian, determined to get the edge back where I wanted it. Happy to report that it was a success and a knife that has a special place in my collection now has a hair popping edge on it again.

Love my Spydie hole Griptillian also!

I knew so little about better quality knives when I bought it I didn’t really realize it was a benchmade with a Spydie Hole. I just knew it had a thumb hole and thought that was cool. When it comes to blades, I was kind of like the random idiot that managed to walk into a gun shop where the counter dudes really recommended G19s instead of some flavor of crap. I’ve learned a LOT since I bought that Griptillian! Like a good G19 though, if I’d never bought another knife after it, I’d have been in really good shape anyway.

I’ve been back and forth over this knife for months. The aluminum handle is textured making it actually useable and I love the anodized blue/grey look. It’s my first ZT and I’m very pleased with overall fit and finish. I was reminded why I don’t love frame locks though. My liner lock knives are much easier to close one handed. My hands are large enough that I have a tough time pushing the lock on this without my fingers pushing against it on the outside. Not a show stopper. This is only going to see carry as my official BBQ knife. Lol! Is that a thing? I figured I have a BBQ gun (in the pic) so it should have a friend.

They put it on sale for $220 and I couldn’t resist any longer.

And now you truly own that knife. :D

Does that mean this guy now owns my Microtech OTF?

Last night I was hanging out (at a 6' distance) with a few buddies, including a retired federal agent. This guy produced his EDC, a Ravencrest Tactical (http://ravencresttactical.com/) OTF (see image below), and we had the opportunity to compare it to my UTX-85. He's not a knife guy, and our takeaways were very different:

Him: Microtech... never heard of it. This knife seems too light and flimsy. It's hard to imagine that you could actually use it for real stuff without it breaking. [cuts himself] Ow! This blade is really sharp. I like the blade... wow this is kind of a cool knife... how much was it? $250? No fucking way. That's $100 more than I paid for mine. Fuck that.

Me: Cool knife. Looks like you've used it a lot. Nice to see someone else EDCing a OTF.

What was thinking but didn't say: The action is ok, and it's kind of impressive that even a Chinese knockoff OTF can keep working for years of hard use. That's a good sign for OTFs in general. The knife was of poor quality in some very obvious ways. There was a lot of blade play in multiple axes. It rattled when shaken. The build quality was low, but if you didn't look too close, it wasn't obvious. And the Ravenscrest is incredibly heavy, which makes sense because the handle is huge, and made from zinc pot metal. My buddy likes the weight because he could use it as a Kubotan.

It was like comparing a High Point to a CNCed custom gun, except the Ravenscrest costs an outrageous $150. Maybe $50 is a fair price for this knife, but I wouldn't want one.

By my own twisted thought process, a guy can cut himself on anyone's stuff, but to own his own personal blades of decent quality, the ones he carries daily, he needs to use them enough to draw a little blood.

I have the similar Puma Sea Hunter...which I've had since I worked at Abercrombie & Fitch back in 1975-1976. Cool knives, but I've seen several which snapped off at the blade / handle junction. (Not as good for prying as some might have thought.)

Thanks. If it ends up in my possession someday I might take it hunting but I’ll be pretty careful with it.

A knife making friend made something inspired in part by the Puma, I might have him make me one I could put to hard use.

Speaking of Townsend Whelen...from "On Your Own In The Wilderness" by Bradford Angier and COL Townsend Whelen:

Common sense...when it was still common.

I always liked that quote and have tried to live up to the idea since I got my first sak at age 10 or 11.

I've been posting it on bladeforums (and here) for years. It's the way things are meant to be.

I didn't want to further muddy the MidwayUSA thread so I dragged these quotes here for a reply.

My Dad wasn't much into carrying a gun, he'd toss one in the glovebox from time to time if he felt the destination warranted it, but he always had his knife and it was always sharp and ready to go. I still have the first knife he gave me as a kid, but the one I carry everyday since his passing in 2016 is his Old Timer. Lots of memories cleaning Sockeye, Steelhead, and Rainbow trout with this one.

Unfortunately this blade isn’t an heirloom because of who owned it before me. But it’s special to me since it’s the knife I used at the age of 14 to convince a Carney in Florida who had followed me out of a Waffle House at midnight that he needed go somewhere else if he didn’t want any extra holes in him.

(I had snuck out of a hotel alone on a school field trip so I could smoke cigarettes, drink coffee and pretend I was Jack Kerouac, there was one of those parking lot carnivals set up at the Walmart)

Currently carrying my brand new 580-2 barrage assisted opening on top. Given to me for my 50th by a close friend who I bought one for his retirement in 2018 with his badge and number etched on the blade. He likes it so much, he reciprocated last month. It was my first assisted opener and I love it.

below that is my workhorse 14200SBT which has quite the story to it posted here: https://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?21874-Shout-out-to-Benchmade-customer-service/page3&highlight=14200SBT unfortunately the pics are long gone.

Then the new Bugout and below that the Bugouts predecessor the 531 that replaced the 14200SBT while it was lost. That one is going to my son for his 16th in November.

I have been on a fixed blade kick lately running the guardian but I carry folders at work and I carry benchmades when it is not a traditional.

First attempt at a forced patina.

Opinel No. 8 Carbone

Before:

59255

After:

59256

Used spicy brown mustard for a basic line pattern then sheathed it in an onion overnight for overall patina.

Not quite the results I was hoping for. Lessons learned - I used the brown mustard because I figured it wasn't as runny as yellow. The brown though was hard to toothpick a pattern in because of the thicknesses. I used the onion for overall patina since it seemed to make sense from online reading but it made a messy blotchy pattern on the blade. If I try this again think I'll go yellow followed by a vinegar bath.

Continuing evolution of the experimental Opinel (https://www.amazon.com/Opinel-Carbon-Steel-Folding-knife/dp/B000UGYWQM/). Last pics in this thread were an attempt at forced patina. Next steps -

Dremel sanded a finger groove, on both sides, to expose the blade enough for one handed opening:

60722

Disassembled (the pivot pin was a pain to punch out. My understanding is this is normal). Sanded the pivot contact area of the handle to let the blade open and close easier. Sanded the handle body to remove the orangish stain from the factory. Stained the handle in Black Cherry:

60724

Reassembled and re-oiled:

60725

Learning as I go. Apparently not too horrible results. Wife is thinking we make more, maybe with carved initials, as Christmas gifts...

S30V steel, black G10 scales, brushed nickel silver bolsters.
Snaps open pretty hard, locks tight, razor sharp out of the box (there's a Band-Aid on my finger that proves it).
I have a custom leather pocket clip slip coming for it.
Old school cool.

Looks like shit in this picture due to the lighting, but in person it's sweet.

Even though the bugout can realistically handle any task I need I've had the itch for that big beefy tactical folder. While the market is saturated with them I wanted one that would also cut. This thing is awesome. It's a super thick slab of m390 ground very thin. I measured it at .020" behind the edge. I ordered this through the service personnel program which I would highly recommend to any Leo/mil/first responders. It's a substantial discount.

I may well have a Delica problem. From the top:

Plain old VG-10 Delica 4 (https://www.amazon.com/Spyderco-Delica-Ground-Plain-Knife/dp/B0089DFGIG/). This is the knife I use at work and it’s probably cut more stuff than any other knife I own
Next is one of the half serrated versions
Third is a ZDP-189 (https://www.amazon.com/Spyderco-Delica-Green-ZDP-189-Folding/dp/B001CO0224/). This was my first “high end” steel knife. Really like it a lot.
Bottom one just came today. It’s a Knifeworks Exclusive is CTS-204P. I got it because I really wanted something in M390, but just couldn’t find exactly what I wanted. My reading indicated that 204P is damn near identical, and as you can see, I love me some Delica so it seemed like a perfect match. Bonus points that it was only like $5 more than a regular VG-10 model.

Probably the last evolution of the Opinel No. 8 Carbone. Lessons learned:

1) Teenage critics are harsh.

Stepson: What are you carving?

Me: A betta.

Stepson: THAT looks NOTHING like Spike*. THAT is a SARDINE.

*Spike being his beloved, student desk perched, betta the last couple of years.

2) When all you have is a Swiss Army Knife, everything looks like a Swiss Army Knife project!

Or not. I used the SAK to carve with since I don’t really have any small woodworking tools. If I work on any more of these I really should get a set of small wood carving tools: tiny blades, tiny files, tiny chisels. The SAK worked but was not ideal and did not allow any really fine detail work. Lack of tools and skills made the results a bit crude but I kind of like it anyways though...

Secondary note: the small blade on the SAK is currently VERY sharp. A small slip working around the handle curve left a nice gash in my pinkie. If it scars, I’m going to allude to a mysterious connection with the Gurkhas and a blade needing to draw blood before being sheathed…

3) The forced patina is low durability. Cutting weed roots in a couple tight spaces in the yard rapidly degraded the patina. It also dulled the knife quicker than the Opinel No. 8 Garden, with a stainless blade, I usually use for these tasks. The 12C27 stainless takes as sharp an edge and definitely retains the edge better cutting through dirt. May not bother with the carbon blades again. Though then again, there’s an article I read recently on rust bluing carbon steel, using hydrogen peroxide and salt, that might be interesting to try…

Boker Plus Strike Drop Point Automatic. 3.25" blade.

My first auto. I fondled a friends OTF auto a while back and just didn't care for it.

The good:
I prefer the slightly smaller size vs the OKT Rat that has been my EDC for a while.
Very grippy.
Plenty sharp.
Great lock-up. Nearly zero play.
Can be locked in both closed or open positions.

The less than good:
The release button is very grindy. It can be depressed part way and the blade will move slightly. Definitely not a "crisp break".
The Rat is much faster to deploy via the assisted open with thumb stud. I don't know why I was expecting different, but, I was. Naivete, I suppose.

Overall happy with it but unlikely to buy another auto folder.

My wife has always carried a folder, so I decided to get her something special for this Christmas. She sponsored a wolf when she was a kid, and long story short that relationship played an important part in her life as she was learning to cope with epilepsy as a teenager and the toll it was taking on her life (as well as more than half of her teeth  ).

So, I got her a Benchmade Bugout with G10 grips instead of the cheap feeling FRN "Grivory", and themed it to her wolf.

Awesome story; awesome knife. I very much wanted to create a custom bugout as I have and love the original. By the time I spec’d out the G10 and M4, it was the same price as the 560-1 Freek so I went that direction.

I decided to get her the S20 steel instead of M4. While most of the surface is cerakoted, how is the M4 edge holding up in terms of corrosion? Do you need to oil it routinely or is the corrosion susceptibility overblown on the interwebs?

ETA: You might appreciate this. I ordered it from Benchmade due to an emotional attachment I have for them. A buddy of mine from the Corps had a friend KIA while he was with 2nd MSOB, and the only thing he could recover from his body was his charred Kabar. The company that makes Kabars never responded to emails inquiring about getting it refurbished. Spyderco answered back with a "sorry, just not in our wheelhouse but here is a refinishing kit and leather for free, godspeed".

Benchmade? Not even their knife. Benchmade took it, completely refurbed it, and mounted it on a plaque....all at no cost...and gave it back to be presented to the son of the Marine who was KIA.

Don't know about you, but shit like that makes a mark and counts with me, hence why my most recent purchases were with Benchmade and Pro-Tech.

Makes me feel better about realizing the bulk of my collection is Benchmade. Amazing that they did that for him. What year was the MSOB friend? The wife is super plugged into the Raider wife community so I end up knowing ALOT of Raiders from mainly 2nd but some 3rd dudes as well. I’ll run the name past her if you don’t mind sharing; if so, no worries. She’s helping two widows right now as she’s pretty grief-informed and our CACO system blows.

Oh yeah, we’re talking knives. The M4 has been way better than the internet would have you believe re corrosion and the sharpening has been way easier than the internet would have you believe. I think I rubbed a bit of CLP on the bevel and “butterfly “ when I first got it a month ago and it’s still good.

It works very well as a wave knife, with most trousers (the wave is a lot smaller than the Spyderco approach, so it doesn't always work out; it also doesn't double as a bottle opener like my Spydies). It is not possible to open it with the thumb stud --- magnets are too strong, at least on my sample. It becomes a two handed knife if I don't wave it open. It will never, ever inertia open.

I got to wave it open in front of a (sparsely populated) office the other day.

There are no magnets. Try this and let us know if it helps: do not touch the locking bar when you open it with the stud or by inertia. It’s hard not to, but the knife will not open if any force is applied to the bar.

I can easily open both of my ZT0620s with the stud or by inertia.

It really did feel magnetic, but I can see what you mean now. Holy cow, that's smooth.

I literally cannot figure out how to hold the knife without touching the locking bar.

At least once a day I think about selling my collection and replacing them with a Sebenza.

That’s essentially what I did. I sold off several knives to buy it and then carried no other knives for a year just to force myself to use it. I’ve since added a couple more knives but I’ve always been more of a user than a collector (knives and guns). If I don’t use it or like it I get rid of it.

Two new autos for my "drawer of sharp objects".

Microtech LUDT
Boker Kalashnikov

The Boker is a snappy little knife for the price, should make a great work knife that I won't feel bad abusing.
The Microtech is solid like every other Microtech I own, it'll make a great general use knife.

The near universal though on the boker kal is that they punch way, way, way above there weight in the sub 50 to sub 100 auto category. Very interested to see how it holds up for your intended uses.

The Boker is definitely snappy and feels good and solid in the hand.
AUS8 steel, decent deep carry clip, slightly recessed firing button.
I've heard the finish (handle, blade and clip) is basically enamel paint and wears off quickly, no big deal for a work knife.
The lockup has a fraction of wiggle to it, nothing that concerns me with a plunger lock.
Feels like a solid knife for $40.

I bought the neon green blade and accents so it stands out if I lay it down somewhere while open. Maybe I won't forget it or lose it as easily.
I wish I could find a bright orange handle with the neon green blade and accents, that would be a great work knife.

Given that you have 40 ish in it, you could likely disassemble and paint up the handles orange rather easily.

This applies only specifically to the Böker Kalashnikov, right? Because I once had a Böker Top Lock that sat on my desk as a stress toy, for opening letters and packages, and such. Eventually it quite literally fell apart as I wore the knife out opening and closing it. I was quite disappointed in the durability of that particular knife.

This doesn’t compare to a lot of the knives in this thread, but I always wanted an Emerson Appalachian but had no need. Got this from the GF for Christmas. I’m pretty floored by the construction considering Chinesium and all. Blade steel isn’t top notch but I don’t need it to be. I gotta say after having carried a 940-2 and Salt 2 for the past two years having something more substantial in the pocket feels good.

I added this to a recent Knifecenter order. It’s a Buck 112 with a synthetic handle and a pocket clip. I’ve had it a couple weeks now and am really happy with it. It locks up tight and was pretty sharp out of the box. I’ve been carrying a Buck Bantam since losing my Spyderco Endurance (which resurfaced a couple years later!!). I like the 112 better than the Bantam so far.

The balance is absolutely perfect, can hold it up with one finger under the guard and the blade feels simultaneously like it weighs nothing and that you could stab it through a car.

Here is one of a pair of RAT RC-3s that were gifted to me by Tom Jones. This one I lent to my PhD supervisor when he went to Brazil early last year. And again to a colleague when she went to Africa in December. So, between me, supervisor, and colleague - it has been carried on three continents. Not really appreciably worn at this point, definitely needs to be beaten on a bit more. We'll see if we can fix that here in the future.

I've had it at least ten years now. It was a gift given to me at the Blade Show by a bladeforurms member who was part of a group I used to pal around with online and at the shows. It was quite a surprise.

I'd been looking for a stout folder in CPM 3V...since it's a steel I have come to love for its properties, (great toughness, good edge holding and corrosion resistance), and they are hard to come by.

A friend on bladeforums made his spare available to me. I'm glad to have it.

I have one small utility knife made of 3V which Ed Schott built for me 20 years ago and it gets regular use around my home. Good stuff.

Clearly a niche knife, but it will be useful for tasks in my environment.

A friend on bladeforums made his spare available to me. I'm glad to have it.

I have one small utility knife made of 3V which Ed Schott built for me 20 years ago and it gets regular use around my home. Good stuff.

Clearly a niche knife, but it will be useful for tasks in my environment.

I've had the same knife for a few years.
Really beefy blade and the golf ball texturing is cool.
My only issue is the lock on mine fails really easily with a spine whack.
Whether you put any validity into the applicability of the spine whack to real world knife use or not is another topic.

I don't plan on testing it in that manner, JodyH , but when it arrived I gave it a few relatively brisk hits with the spine into my palm. Nothing happened and that was good enough for me. I don't foresee a situation where I would be using it in a manner where that should be an issue. (Doesn't mean it can't happen, though.)

What is the reasoning on the blade shape/channel in the blade for that knife?

I can't speak to Schempp's original design. It may have been for weight reduction or some other purpose, I don't see it as a "blood groove". Or it could be stylistic.

Mainly, it's a stout spear point which is useful for many purposes, and the extra weight behind the blade, (in a tough steel like 3V), makes it more suitable for tasks like light chopping and batoning and such.

The Uncle Henry was a gift from my grandparents my senior year of high school about 82 or 83. It rode on my belt everywhere for years, through college and early in my police career. I finally wised up and bought a cheaper Schrade lockback for my duty belt until I got my first Spyderco.
The fixed blade was made by a friend a few years ago. I believe it’s S35. I’ve batoned the heck out of it. I’ve not used it on game but other friends have used theirs. I like it as it’s big enough to do work but not overly bulky. It came with a kydex sheath but I also have a SpecOps Brands sheath for it.

I want a Police model so bad, but I’m not LE and am afraid buying one will make me look like a poser/wannabe. I like the way yours has a well used well loved look to it.

Just get one! It’s not like the name of it means that much in the broad scheme of things.

Nope, not at all. Really, my thing with the Police model is it has “POLICE” emblazoned on the blade in pretty big letters. Totally legit if you’re a cop, just not sure if my non-sworn self looks like a knife afi or a poser holding something like that.

The Military model has no such lettering and I happily own/carry/use one of those.

The lightweight Police (https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details/C07F4K390/Police-4-Lightweight-K390/1907) doesn't have the name on the blade, in case you didn't know. :)

Another CPK fan? My Dad gave me a 6in Utility Fighter a couple years back (hell of a gift!) and that spent the better part of my 2019-2020 deployment either on my belt, inside my waistband, or on my IOTV. Made short work of a LOT of tough jobs and it still looks basically unused. Simply a fantastic blade.

Pardon me while I drool all over the keyboard... that's a hell of CPK collection!

My Dad is indeed wise, and very generous. He's a collector as well, and is is very much into HI Kukris and CPK knives among other things. He has a similar assortment of CPK's. Though he prefers the lighter-color blade finishes and the wood.
While he excitedly shares & shows off his latest acquisitions every time I go visit, I'm embarrassed to say I have a hard time keeping up with all the different models. He does have a CPK boot dagger that I deeply covet (I'm told every CPK enthusiast covets those, and I'm not surprised) as well as another rare model called the Shiv. I suspect you're an Smod on a forum he frequents :)

He gave me two CPK's before that 2019 deployment; the Utility Fighter that became a constant companion, and a Heavy Duty Field Knife. The UF fit in another old sheath I had which made it much easier to carry than the Kydex it came in. So the Utility Fighter was perfect for almost-daily carry and could still hide under my OCP uniform.

I'll have to snap some pictures of both when I get a chance!

JRB That's a heavy duty field knife with the ironwood scales.

I have a steamer trunk full of khukuris from HI downstairs. I've given some away over the years.

This one was designed by my late (Cherokee) friend from OK, Yvsa Gigagei:

How do you like the Smock?

I haven't had it but for a few days but my initial impressions from the shop and now having one in hand are that it's like if i took a 940 and changed a few things to my liking.

Spyderhole - i prefer holes over studs and while a smaller hole opener on the smock, it is plenty functional

Lock - i like the axis lock plenty and am not a bug compression lock fan from the standpoint of single hand manipulation. But the button compression lock allows single hand manipulation without getting near the blade with your fingers and without having to push the blade closed with other objects or body parts etc...i really dig this lock type from a manipulation standpoint

Flipper - not a necessity for me but i do like the extra leverage it provides and i occasionally fidget. It looks seamless so i don't even notice it until i want to.

Choil - that was my biggest complaint about the 940. I felt like it had a pretty long blade and no good way to choke up on it. I'm not even sure this choil was designed as a finger choil, it works that way for my finger size and allows me to get a high grip when i might need more control.

It's thin, looks cool, and has a feature set i enjoy. I think it'll be pushing a few blades down the road as it takes over pocket time.

Finally got a Pena X series variant. This one is a clip point Barlow that has seen some pocket time but i was a sucker for the jigged bone scales fitted by Jerry Valdez. It also came with the micarta scales and clip. Nice modern traditional and it sure is pretty. I'm going to carry it for awhile and see if it fits my tastes or not.
