50 pound pit mix in the neighbors field chasing the goats. Guy shot the dog in the backside with what appeared to be a 20g loaded with #4 shot. He must have been really close because the shot and wad went through the base of the tail, effectively amputating it, and into the right caudal medial thigh. This dog had your typical meaty muscular pit thighs. I retrieved the wad about 4 inches into the wound and some shot. Rads showed a ton of birdshot in the thigh, none had penetrated the skin on the proximal thigh or broken the femur. Basically the contents of the shot shell was contained in the thigh muscle. I only see the lucky ones as an emergency vet, and this dog should recover nicely from his wounds, but it was a reminder of how little penetration you get with bird shot. Buck would have gone through the leg, broken the femur and ended up in the chest or abdomen. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171106/e76619e07103e58132c616b9e106cbaa.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171106/7c5b6444f4b2d68e5c7e58e799ee7a8b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171106/50acd65ee4058a0081571854af05f38a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171106/5765b3987b99c3c6b0cf9b78a925c4c0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171106/91d0f28113710406c47ee62da291e3d5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171106/aeca99a3a17a93df8e5ae57acd42907b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171106/e0e8095f92eccd6df7f84bf6ca24db5d.jpg

I feel simultaneously sorry for the pup and frustrated that, this particular load of #4 shot wasn't aimed at the dog's owner...

Was the shooter's IQ roughly 7?

Why does one person's pet trump another's? I get that people don't like goats the way they like dogs, and I, personally, agree.

But it comes down to your property affecting someone else's and them rectifying it, that's it.

Maybe it's just because I grew up rural, but when that's your family's income (yes I know people that live off goats) or your daughter looks at that dumb goat like it's all that matters, you do what's right for YOUR family.

The shooter was within their right to kill the dog and didn't. This should be a thread about bird shot effectiveness which is what I believe the OP intended.

Livestock getting chased by dogs ends badly for the dogs, if the livestock owner catches them at it.

This, all day and twice on market day.

I always preferred a pellet gun for dogs that were nosy around livestock. A good shot in the ass often sent them home with their tail between their legs. But if we had a feral dog or 'yote that was going after livestock, a load of #3-#4 buckshot was usually the solution.

I have a low opinion of the average gun owner (spend any time at all around "gun people" and it's immediately obvious many apparently haven't graduated middle school). Some retard poorly popping off 20ga birdshot at a dog chasing his goats around is just comical icing on that misanthropic cake.

Next thread will be how some dumbass shot a cow up with .22 after it got loose and ran into his front door.

Not the dogs fault. Even my daughter's fat weiner dog thinks he's a dire wolf on the hunt for prey. Its the owner's fault.

Just look at the predator in action!

I don't plan to shoot someone because it's their /fault/. If I shoot someone, it will be because they're doing something bad that has to stop.

Didn't say it was the dogs fault, but that's not going to help when the livestock owner takes exception to potential or actual damage to livestock and applies a ballistic remedy.

This was just supposed to be about the lack of penetration with bird shot. I stay out of the rest of it and just try and fix what they bring me

I appreciate the visual reminder.

Let me be clear with my point. My point is that there are no bad dogs, but bad owners. Its the dog owners fault that this happened, and that the dog suffered because of that owner.

EDIT: as for the visuals, might be helpful to put in a warning for us dog lovers in the thread topic.
