Looking to get a new AR. I like all different types from high value budget stuff up to boutique high priced guns. I’ve been looking at a couple that aren’t super popular because I want something different.

M&P15T with mlok. I like the 1/8 5R barrel, mlok rail, and midlength gas system. And they are like $825 from some places.

Seekins SP15 NOXS. I was handling this Seekins at Cabelas and it was sweet. Looked in to it and it was an exclusive model for cabelas with a forged upper and lower. Found this one on their website. Seems the same but it has a billet upper and lower and seems pretty cool. I have a 20% code for Seekins so I can get it for a grand.

Finally was thinking of grabbing a Colt 6920 Lower from my local shop and ordering a noveske basic Recce upper for an old school but quality setup. What do y’all think?

Naa. General stuff. Will put an MRO on it.

How about one of the offerings from Daniel Defense?

Between the M&P and the Seekins you describe above, I would be inclined to go with the known commodity that happens to be cheaper - M&P. I would note that Colt 6920, DD and the pre Sportster M&P 15A et al were all on Pat Roger's (RIP) GTG list.

OP, any reason you ae going with an MRO v an Aimpoint?
Any reason not to go with a 1-4/6/8 optic instead?

No judgements at all, just curious.

Be safe and well.

Does "General stuff" include the possibility of home defense or other people shooting activities?

Maybe. I use a pistol for HD. Doubt I’d go to an AR unless zombies come and the looters are out.

I like the greater FOV on the MRO. Less tubelike compared to an Aimpoint. Daniel Defense is cool. In fact I own one. Just trying to get something a little different. Maybe try it out in classes and stuff.

If you're just looking for something quality, but different, here are some you may not have thought of. I, personally, would love a Noveske and find the old school Troy real appealing

Sons of Liberty looks awesome! Lame name but so much customization options.

I've had nothing but great experiences with both Sons of Liberty Gunworks and Sionics Weapon Systems. Both companies put together a solid working rifle and have excellent customer service. If you can wait until the holiday season, they might have some great deals like they did last year.

There's nothing wrong with the M&P15 you were looking at and it's reasonably priced, so if you like how it's configured go for it.

I have the M&P15T (with a pic rail-pre MLOK). It has a Leupold 1-4 VX/R Hog Hunter. It shoots well with both Hornady 55 grain V-max and the steel case FMJ.

I've also got a 1/8 MP15T - very accurate and has been just as reliable as any AR or M4/Mk18 I've ever owned, issued, or used.

If you already have the carbine size niche covered, have you shot a full size 20" rifle recently? They seem pretty smooth and soft compared to the 16" guns. Just a thought.

I have the same rifle, a 2007 or 2008 vintage S&W M&P 15T. I replaced the 10" Troy pic rail with a 13" Troy Alpa rail. It shoots well.

The standard S&W ARs are solid choices. People confuse the standard M&P ARs with the Sports - two different levels of quality.

Troys complete guns and uppers are not of the same quality as the other brands you listed.

Of the two guns listed by the OP I would choose the S&W 15T over the Seekins.

The original couple of batches of S&W rifles we ordered at work were ok guns. But lately the Standard S&W rifles are actually Sports with different rails. This includes LE guns. At work, our last batch of 50 S&W rifles received about two weeks ago seem fine when they were being sighted in. Out of last years batch of 50 rifles that were purchased, about 10 of them had barrel issues. I ordered 8 rifles for some of my canine officers and all 8 had barrel issues. (Key holing at about 7 yards).

In the current market, I have a hard time recommending S&W. There are too many other quality guns out there at around the same price point.

I believe the upper and lower receivers are the same but the sports have 1/9 barrels and carbine gas systems where the m&p’s Have 1/8 5R barrels that are highly regarded and midlength gas systems. Surprised to hear you were having issues.

If you are looking for a carbine length gun these seem to offer a lot for the money. I have seen them closer to the 1k mark at a local LE supply

The best value going right now in the price range of the MP15 mentioned above is the Colt 6920r Trooper. Get one before the current batch sells out. I guarantee you, this is the AR everyone is going to look back on and say "I shoulda got one when I had the chance."

I was under the impression they were FN sourced barrels, correctly tested bolts, and staked correctly (which are the 3 things I know about). What about them isn't up to the TDP? I'd appreciate the info.

Not on the A3 and A4 models I've seen. Maybe on their new "higher end" guns ?

The Troy guns I've seen have been similar to the Aero complete guns - the parts they make themselves are good then they go as cheap as possible on the other parts.

I’m really liking that Sionics upper too.

Colt M4 Lower with an ALG ACT trigger and MOE grip
Sionics upper with mid weight barrel
LMT enhanced BCG or JP full mass BCG

Sounds legit to me.

Interdasting. I bought the first version they came out with and that was my understanding of its build at the time (6+ years ago). Obviously, a lot could change since then and I'm guessing it did. Good to know.

More research suggests this first one was a limited edition/trial one and likely different from what they produce today.

How much is that Colt lower going for? Sionics has some blem lowers with ACT-style triggers for about $200

Things change all the time. I like my early S&W M&P 15T which came with a troy free float rail and Troy back up sights. S&W subsequently began substituting a no name rail and no name BUIS or no BUIS but continued charging the same price. They then updated the 15T with a Troy MLOK rail and MBUS BUIS.

Hell, the early S&W sports had the same 1/8 twist TC produced barrels as the higher end guns. They were a great deal as fixer uppers when first released.

$400. Not a great price. I think someone online was selling them for 2 something but backordered. But it’s just nice to have that Colt stamped lower.

I believe it was Brownells selling them for 200 something. They are backordered but you can still place an order. Discount code H7L still works to give you $20 off and free shipping on any order over $200.

If you don’t mind putting one together you could go Larue.
