I would like to get the opinion of the pf community on these two pistols and which you think is a better buy. I am looking for a home defense pistol and have narrowed it down to these to because of the price, ergo, and recoil.

There's several threads that illustrate this forums general feelings towards XD's...

I'd rather have the M&P by a wide margin. F-trooper alluded to this forum's justified feelings on the XD series.

I hope you are kidding; they are numerous agencies, organizations, and other end-user groups using M&P's, yet no major ones using XD's--might be a reason for that...

If my choices were limited to those two, I would not hesitate to pick the M&P.

If you could just any pistol with minimal recoil and at a decent price what would you choose?

I have an XDm 9 that has run flawlessly through 2000 rounds or so and it appears to be made well and the parts fit well, however I do not shoot it particularly well and it's bore axis seems high to me, also it is an ESP gun in IDPA.I have used my glock 17 for years (Gen 2) and it has been an amazing gun as far as reliability and I shoot it well, however, when I shot an M&P pro it was obvious that I shot it better than any other gun I have tried, so it is now my IDPA gun. I am not impressed however with quality control at S&W. The slide to frame fit is horrible, the front site was crooked and absolute accuracy is marginal, probably due to the barrell lockup problem. I do not feel near as comfortable using it as my carry gun and still use the 17 for that. If I had to run to my safe and grab one gun to use in a true emergency, it would always be the Glock.

As a Glock guy, I would go with the M&P. I have shot the XDs and they are nice. After hearing about the issues they have I will never own one. Back before I know anything about firearms I was thinking about getting a XD or a Glock 35. I ended up getting the Glock 35. I made a wise choise :) I have shot the M&P 45 and that thing was nice! From what I hear there is more support (armors and parts) for the M&P then there is for the XD. That is what is important to me. If something goes wrong with my Glock, and it will, you can take to someone and get it fixed. I have a lot of Glock Armors in my area so I know I can get it fix right away. I am thing that my next handgun purchase will be an M&P 40 or a Glock 23 4 gen. I am leaning more towards the M&P :)

Between these two - The M&P. Pricing is comparable to Glock and it is one of the "softest" shooting service weapons in terms of recoil. A large agency in my area is considering replacing their .357 caliber SIG's with M&P. They recently had a random sample of officers shoot the M&P .357 with their current duty ammo and provide feedback. The reduction in felt recoil was one of the positives noted by all participants. This mirrors my experience with my own M&P 45.
