Nope, don't like anything newer than an M40A1. The first person to gift me an M40A1 gets my shitty mod super powers.

Remington released a limited edition (not certain how closely it approximated the original) Vietnam era copy several years back. I almost bought one, but let it pass. One a few firearms related decisions I still regret.

I'm OK with modernizing one of these a bit, not making it a faithful report. Scope of my choice, 6.5CM caliber.

I like this idea. 6.5 cm, NXS 2.5-10, and an oiled wood stock. Old meets new.
For those that know: is it possible to maintain an acceptable level of accuracy with a wood stock?

Yup, just skim bed. I like your scope choice.

I think Mel of SniperCentral may have been one of the first to make a Vietnam-era M40. I seem to recall reading that he had thought that Remington saw his recreations and created their own variation.
Anyway, a link:
https://web.archive.org/web/20070403050557/http://www.snipercentral.com:80/scm40.htm
Mel no longer makes these, so I wouldn't bother inquiring.
I wanted a left handed version, in .223 with a repro Redfield. Someday I may get one.

Mel solved the problem by using a stock with an aluminum bedding block:
The SC-M40 was a 96% replica of the original M40 with some improvements. The largest of which is the bedding on the rifle. While we are keeping true to the original M40 and not glass bedding the rifles, we are doing the next best thing, using an Accurate Innovations ® walnut stock with their patent pending aluminum bedding block.
I looked into the stock once, and it was something like $800

First thing I thought of too. Add the nightforce, and pretty soon we are talking moderator money.

The M40 is my favorite sniper rifle. Back in the 90s, put together my own M40 "clone". A Remington 40x Varminter in 7.62x51 topped with a Leupold 10x. I wish I'd gotten a variable, but the 10x is reportedly what the Marine Corps was using at the time, so I went with that instead. The 40x is heavy, but I love shooting it.
LL, I don't know if my "M40" is good enough pron for your thread, but here she is.

The figure in that stock would qualify as a "CZ lottery winner" today.

In that vein... I'd love to see a replica of a bull barreled pre-64 with that old school 3 foot long unertl scope...

I had one of those McM trade-in M40A1 stocks. Too bad I didn't know this when I sold it :)

Carlos used an M40 during his second tour. It was destroyed when the APC Carlos was riding exploded and caught fire.
I think he's holding it here, in this photo

I liked the M40, and was in the Marine Corps during the 90s. Yes, it was a fixed 10x scope.
Still, for serious long range work, I can’t get excited about a .308 Win rifle. That the snipers of the day were so successful is a testament to their abilities and field craft skills.
If ever I get around to building a bolt action 6.5 CM, I’ll likely base it on the M40A1 set up. Until then, this little varmint gun will have to suffice.

I have been giving serious thought to the 6.5 Creedmore. I've been thinking about an AR in 260 Remington since the cartridge was introduced

I'm not a fan of AR-10 sized ARs, I think that unless you really, really need that fast follow up second shot; that a bolt gun will be more accurate, cheaper, and easier to pack/maneuver than an AR-10 sized gun.

Me neither. I had one and don't regret selling it.
It's trickier to shoot well because follow-through is critical, that's largely due to the longer/multiple recoil cycle. That's not as big of a deal when shooting prone, if you have a reasonable technique, but it's a noticeable drawback when shooting in unconventional positions. If you care about precision, you're probably using decent brass, and ARs beat up brass.

Not to mention the very common first round flier due to loading technique/method.
